Came here to say this. It doesn't shy away from showing the sport either, using skaters who could act rather that actors who thought they could skate. Sure, it's pedestrian and unfulfilling by modern movie standards (especially compared to something like Goon) and "of it's age" in other ways, but still a great despite being nearly 50 years old!

Love the Q[&A] pods. Not to put words in anyone's mouth though but I suspect Simon's question was more about what sometimes seems to be the increasing dis/misinformation aspect of headlines in our clickbaity age rather than "pastoral care" of the journalist (though that's important too). (of course "clickbait" has always happened to some extent - can't remember whose law it is but the one that goes "Whenever a headline asks a question the answer is 'No'" has been around for decades. Edited to add: for info, it's "Betteridge's law")
@hannahk1306

Yes, I was thinking this too. I've noticed that ITV (amongst many others) will do this a lot, where they will post on social media a headline and a snippet from the article that paint a certain sensationalist picture. If you actually read the attached article, it either paints the complete opposite picture; is entirely neutral; or has little to no information at all. The vast majority of the comments under such posts are clearly related to the headline and the snippet alone, often berating the subject or asking questions that have been addressed in the article. At that point (where people aren't even reading the article), it feels more like disseminating misinformation than reporting the news.

Can you tell me why the percentages shown in TV cosmetics adverts are so small, like "84% people say this product is great" and at bottom of the screen it shows 63 people were asked. when the product is sold in millions? Why does the Advertising Authority not implement a standard amount of people to be canvassed for an opinion say 1000?
@johnpotts8308
@johnpotts8308 4 месяца назад
I imagine it's cherry picked - they run 10 tests and pick the best one. Then you need to look out for weasel words like "Out of 379 people who expressed a preference" which eliminates all those who said they couldn't tell them apart (which could be most of those sampled). And if it's (say) a perfume stand in a store where they're offering a free sample, people are already inclined to say they liked it. Of course, that doesn't always work, as years ago I took "The Pepsi Challenge" (ask your grandparents!) and deliberately picked Coke.
@dangleebols

@johnpotts8308 Surely that should not be allowed to be used as a selling point, as it deceives the public!

As a one-time violinist, i always cringe at actors trying to look like they are playing a violin. Cumberbatch, Rathbone etc for obvious reasons. And in general actors pretending to play just about any instrument. One exception to this is Ryan Gosling, in La La Land. I believe he studied enough piano to make it look convincing at first blush. Another is Miles Teller in Whiplash, although i know drummers who balk at the overall tenor of the story as told in the movie, as totally unrealistic.

I was working as a steward at Wembley stadium in about 1993 and one of the medics on duty that day was a former grange hill actor. I can’t remember the character name but he was really well known and in it for a long time. We got chatting and he started telling me about all the shenanigans in A&E, how he’d had some quite well known politicians in there with animals up there backsides. Before he could tell me the names a bunch of fans recognised him and turned around and started chanting his name Grange Hill name! I never got to hear the end of the story.

Le Mans was one film which got a lot of the sport right. But this was at least partly because Steve McQueen was such a good driver. The racing driver Derek Bell said that during racing sequences, McQueen was able to keep up with them, even when they were pushing the cars to the limit. In consequence, there was no need to artificially speed up the film - the lead actor was genuinely going that fast!
@Hexon66

Dream Teams' Captain, Duncan Pow, was in Star Wars Rogue One and Andor, another player from the final season (that I worked on), David Ajala, is a key regular in Star Trek Discovery and has done very well for himself over the years. Harchesters home ground was actually Millwall and every fortnight we'd film on the pitch shooting tight enough to just see Harchester players on the grass doing some passes. Sky footage from premiere league matches had to be chosen so that for the wide shots they would be playing the team of the week (say Chelsea) and therefore footage had to be of Chelsea playing a team of a single colour strip (say yellow) that could be chroma-keyed to Harchester Uniteds purple, which would also turn the matching clothes of the supporters in the stands purple too. Yes it was a bit ropey as keying had fuzzy edges but you didn't linger on it too much and cut back to the tighter pitch footage to sell it.

The Replacements, a film about American football, is genius that way, I think, because the idea is that most of the featured players are supposed to be terrible. The pros are on strike, and the teams all bring in has-beens and never-weres as scabs to finish out the season. So if they all look terrible, then it's absolutely authentic. And this all works for American football anyway because you can pretty easily use actual athletes in the wide shots what with the helmets and pads and everything.
