A 2007 Dodge Magnum with a bad diode in the alternator may experience several issues with its electrical system. The first and most common symptom is dimming or flickering lights, which can occur when the alternator is not producing enough power to keep the battery charged and run the electrical components of the vehicle. The engine may also have difficulty starting, or the battery may not charge properly.
Another symptom of a bad diode in the alternator is strange noises coming from the alternator itself. This can include whining, buzzing, or grinding sounds, which may indicate that the alternator is working harder than it should to produce power. Additionally, a burning smell may be present, indicating that the alternator is overheating.
To determine if the diode is the cause of the problem, a mechanic will perform a diagnostic test on the alternator. If a bad diode is found, it will need to be replaced in order to fix the issues. In some cases, the alternator may need to be replaced entirely if it is found to be damaged or worn out.
Ripple in an alternator AC refers to the small variations in the output voltage of the alternator. This can occur due to a number of factors, such as fluctuations in the load on the alternator or imperfections in the alternator's design. Ripple can have a negative impact on the performance of devices that use the alternator's output, such as causing electronic devices to malfunction or reducing the lifespan of battery-powered devices. In order to minimize ripple, engineers often use filtering techniques, such as using a smoothing capacitor or a voltage regulator.
The normal ripple voltage in an alternator AC can vary depending on the specific application and the devices that are being powered by the alternator. However, in general, a ripple voltage of less than 1% of the overall voltage is considered to be acceptable for most applications.
In some cases, such as in power supplies for sensitive electronic devices, the ripple voltage may need to be even lower, on the order of a few millivolts.
It's important to note that ripple voltage can be measured in different ways, such as peak-to-peak, RMS or Crest factor. Also, the ripple can be measured in different frequency ranges, such as high frequency or low frequency. It's important to specify the measurement method and frequency range when discussing the ripple voltage.

My car won’t start it sounds like a machine gun when I turn the key would that considers as a bad alternator?

If you say it sounds like a machine gun do you mean it's clicking? If you're hearing a clicking sound it could be just a dead battery. You generally won't hear an alternator if it is bad. Sometimes a bad alternator will make a high pitch whining sound.
