@@Reggie1408 To say animation is a genre means it has boundaries on what stories and themes it can tell. Which is not true. You could take almost any live action/Live Action and CGI and turn it into an animated film. You could create a detective film, a sci-fi film, a horror film, etc. with animation. Also, you cannot have dinosaurs in a sci-fi film. It doesn't make sense unless it is a crossover. What I'm trying to say is that animation can cover all genres and have unlimited themes and stories.

So I’m in animation student in college (scad) right now and a few weeks ago Blue Sky Studios came in to talk to us. For those of you who don’t know, Blue Sky does the ice age franchise and Ferdinand. Interestingly enough, they brought up this exact topic in their lecture. Apparently the company plans on doing more mature movies in the future, not mature as in adult humor but movies with a broader target audience. Though they’ll still be family movies, they want to make movies with exactly what you were talking about, emotional impact and complexity. In 2020 they will be releasing a film adaption of the webcomic “Nimona”, which though I haven’t read, is popular among my peers 18-20 year olds. So I have pretty high expectations! I think this is a good indicator of where the animation industry is moving as a whole, the people going into animation now are a generation of people who grew up watching Pixar, and even studio ghibli. The demand for more mature animation is clearly there, and the people who are making these films are passionate about it to.

Actually Boss Baby is a very sophisticated film about how corporate American is seeping into family life & infecting our children. You have to have a high IQ to understand, luckily I watch Rick & Morty.
@mr.creamiersteamiermemeier5919
DynamitePenguins I find that funny because the Boss Baby is legitimately not a bad form of satire, and that's exactly what the plot relies upon. When you boil the movie down it's just a silly cartoon with Alec Baldwin playing exactly the same character he's always played for years, to the same dynamic of the business man to a dreamer. In the end good old Alec becomes a better person and the dreamer becomes rightfully sinical. And, this is a theme that's actually surprisingly prevalent in children's entertainment; because it works both as good comedy, as well as it offers an idea of a balanced set of morals.
@CassidyShadewing
@CassidyShadewing 6 лет назад
Mr. Creamier Steamier Memeier I rather like Boss Baby, I don't think it needs a sequel or animated series but I feel the movie itself is a fun way to teach kids about balance. Kids through parents can get very focused and obsessive over things like school and such, while other kids might be infinite dreamers. Some kid movies like to focus on the latter being best, while Boss Baby shows both can exist and be good but also show that being too far into either mindset isn't ideal. So we get a movie about how both sides need each other and about that its okay to make sacrifices to your beliefs and still achieve your goals. Its no masterpiece but I do feel its better then most give it credit for. Certainly a better movie overall then Minions or Emoji movie.

Can't wait for the Boss Baby trilogy!
@draco18s
@draco18s 6 лет назад
Agreed. I'm not sure that Boss Baby was objectively a good film, but it was not the trash that everyone makes it out to be. It has a genuinely good message, but so much of the advertising, promotion, news, and discussion of the film focuses on the *first half* of the movie: the baby in a suit. And not so much on the *second half* where it gets serious.
@CassidyShadewing
@CassidyShadewing 6 лет назад
Yeah, I went in with low expectation, and not having much better to do, and ended up pleasantly surprised. It's at the very least a very decent movie with a lot of really fun bit scattered through out, and good message when given a chance. And yeah, the first half is kinda what you expect going in, but once it really gets going with its plot its really enjoyable, it just takes maybe a bit too long to get to that point. These same conditions lead me to also enjoying Sing. Its not a great movie, but I feel it too deserves just a bit more respect then what it gets. Yes, the main story with Moon is kinda flat; Also the mouse is the worst character that really drags the movie down imo and never gets any real comeuppance; but everyone else is rather fun and charming with some nice stories of their own that I feel can appeal to multiple people. I think that's the biggest charm of the movie, its a movie with several nice messages that get just enough time to drive their points home without weighing anything down. Apparently Sing is getting a sequel as well, and yeah... I'll admit I want to see where some of these characters go. Which I suppose puts it above Boss Baby since I don't feel there is much more it really could do there without re-treading the basic ideas; Sing I feel still has places it can go with all its characters that I think there's enough story potential for a a fun and decent sequel.

What do people mean when they say, "Animation is a medium, not a genre!" It's just something I've been a bit confused with.
@egtoonster
@egtoonster 6 лет назад
Genre dictates the content matter of a film - examples of these are dramas, comedies and thrillers. Animation isn't just one genre, it can be any genre. An animated film could be an R-rated horror film, or a documentary. The medium is the filmmaker's way of portraying a story. Just like animation, live-action is a medium, and is used to portray a variety of different stories. But animation is confined to such stereotypes pushed by the industry (and by audiences, to be fair) that many people call it a genre, because animated films normally portray wholesome family content. That's not necessarily a terrible thing, but it narrows the scope of what people expect from animation. Hope that clarifies things a bit! Brad Bird talks about this issue as well, if you want to look it up.

That is the thing. Animation is more or less a child's entry point into watching movies. If they are been raised by generic movies, then they might grow up not caring about the quality of non-animated movies that are presented to them. It's an endless cycle. Calm the fuck down people. The video has its shortcomings, but this particular moment is hardly one of them. He specifically states: the movie with *MAINSTREAM* appeal. @Almaironn

The point is not the innacuracy, it's the fact that he chooses to only focus on animation with "mainstream appeal". If the whole point of the video is to stop supporting bad animation, why ignore some excellent animation that has come out recently, while in the same sentence complaining about lack of good animation? Lack of mainstream appeal is not an excuse.

A lot of beautiful animated films are produced every year. There are festivals for animated films which are packed with quality films. It's just that they don't find proper distribution/marketing and attention goes all to the big studios crap. This year a gorgeous little film called "Weekends" got nominated for best animated short. But of course the award went to the Pixar one. I'm not saying "Bao" was bad, because it wasn't, but it's become almost comical how the Oscars for animation (both feature and short) are predictable. Some indie jewels just don't any attention and distribution.

its not a genre, its a medium. nothing is filmed and you dont need a computer. guys have made animated films with a knife edge to a roll of unrecorded celluloid film. By perpetuating it as a genre of film, its medium limitations will remain to film instead of its own medium limitations which differ from live action which generates the majority of genre types. also fuck the oscars, thats just the disney-pixar award. start promoting cannes, SxSW, Sundance, or your local film fests; drop the oscars, where their panel only watches what gets pushed to their desk in dvd quality, and who limit one film per nonUSA nation, so if korea makes their 5 best films, only one gets application. plus, all foreign animated films struggle too. The Breadwinner was the only film nominated from that year, even though theyre different mediums.

I think it's interesting that you say that because I know that Brad Bird once said in an interview, “People think of animation only doing things where people are dancing around and doing a lot of histrionics, but animation is not a genre. And people keep saying, ‘The animation genre.’ It’s not a genre! A Western is a genre! Animation is an art form, and it can do any genre. You know, it can do a detective film, a cowboy film, a horror film, an R-rated film or a kids’ fairy tale. But it doesn’t do one thing. And, next time I hear, ‘What’s it like working in the animation genre?’ I’m going to punch that person!” Thinking about it as a medium (which it is) means that people would see animation as a different way to tell the story that they want to tell; a new way to express it. It can do so much that live-action can't but much of that remains unexplored except for in the odd cases like with Brad Bird, Wes Anderson and Hayao Miyazaki. It's one of the greatest unknown territories in cinema that for children, adolescents and adults alike can be an extraordinarily powerful medium to tell a story through/with.

cactie I agree. Growing up with The Lion King, The Land before Time, older Pixar films, and Disney classics makes me wish for a 2D - especially hand drawn - renaissance. I find that people today are too focused on spontaneous action, fast paced visuals, and not enough on good work like with the time it takes to make good movies like they used to. Even though everyone will dismiss this idea as "nostalgia" or holding on to old ideas, I think it's critical that children especially nowadays exposed to more internet media than ever, grow up with meaningful films and animated works, not a couple of highly repulsive minion fart jokes or boss baby hype because of a baby in a suit.

Kind of weird that you didn't once mention or even show a clip of Loving Vincent or The Breadwinner, the OTHER 2017 Oscar-nominated Animated Features that are basically everything you're talking about (lovingly crafted, made for more than just cheap kid's entertainment). It points to a lack of actual research into the topic, reinforced by hugely dismissive statements like "What the fuck is Pirates?" (Which, for the record, is an extremely well-made Aardman-animated stop-motion film beloved by critics and audiences that failed to be successful because of poor marketing). Next time, I recommend taking a little more time when making video essays like this, because "We should make more good animated movies instead of bad animated movies, btw I haven't watched most of these movies" isn't very compelling. This sort of thing usually doesn't bug me, but it kind of has to be pointed out when someone quite literally makes a video about how we shouldn't ignore well-made animated movies that ignores well-made animated movies.

You know what Minions did for my 3 year old? Introduced her to music from the 60's that she's never heard before in her life. Allowed her to recognize physically expressed emotions and plot without needing to understand the minion gibberish language. Even gave her a geography lesson because she has pointed out London sites to me in other shows. I asked her how she knew that and she said she saw it in the movie! There's more that kids latch onto and need from animated movies than sophisticated, original stories. She also throughly enjoys Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wall-E, and other amazing movies that will even satisfy adult tastes in film. But kids also need to see the silly and outrageous for developing creativity, just as much as they need to get messy with finger paint and not just learn to color inside the lines all the time.

Yeah this video discounts kids’ experiences with these movies and that what appeals to kids may not always appeal to adults. From Disney sitcoms to 4kids anime dubs, everyone grew up with something that may not appeal to an adult but may have a profound impact on its target demographic. When an adult says The Boss Baby is bad because I think it looks stupid, that only applies to how adults see it and in my opinion the adult opinion is not the defining factor of whether or not a movie aimed at children is terrible. This guy maybe didn’t see kids laugh and tear up during The Boss Baby but I did, and that is more valuable than a random adult’s take, in my opinion.

You need to change your title. You are criticizing storytelling, not animation. And your claims seem a little... subjective. On top of that you don't offer any supporting evidence as to why the storytelling is bad in the movies that you point out other than, "I think it's kinda stupid." Having taken a class on analysis of children's literature, I think it's extremely unfair of you to make the claims that the movies you pointed out have bad storytelling without at least diving into analysis of a basic plot summary for each. The amount of views and the like ratio on this ill-researched all-opinion video concerns me.
@arianagrandebayo
@arianagrandebayo 5 лет назад
This video is garbage honestly, although the concepts of Boss Baby, Angry Birds, etc seem ridiculous they DO have an underlying message that they tell, which literally is the opposite of what the video is claiming, which is that they're just goofy bad comedies with no plot or message. And they are pretty positive messages (boss baby is about family and love, angry birds is about like friendship / loneliness and not being a grump). This guy is literally just appealing to the popular culture bashing of these movies just because of their names, basically. It's like he didn't even see the movies and is just saying their names are stupid and the concept is ridiculous. ALSO the animation in those movies is amazing... And I love how he bashed the idea of them making a movie with Mario when there isn't even a slight CONCEPT of what the story might be out there yet, which completely goes against his POINT in the video because he's judging a book by the cover. What a horrible video.
@sharkymcsnarkface6642
@sharkymcsnarkface6642 5 лет назад
Luca I vehemently disagree. Sure, they do have a story. But they’re extremely basic, and lazy. Anyone can pull “friendship is magic” out of the plot bin and copy paste it into the script. No sane man on the planet Earth will say any of them have good stories. Their message is good, but that part is pretty hard to fuck up. You need to actively try to give your movie a bad message, and it’s not like these movies tried on any front. Oh, and they did make a movie with Mario. Guess what? It was pretty shit.
@ShadowLinkxMaster
@ShadowLinkxMaster 5 лет назад
@@sharkymcsnarkface6642 What Luca was referring to, was the _upcoming_ Mario film, and for some reason, Karsten is slamming it, despite there being no official details on it's plot. He could've made a point by speculating it's plot, but he seems to hastily hate the idea right away. I know the 1993 Mario movie was god-awful, but that was a combination of a duo-director team who were at throats with each other, which produced a horrible plot and terrible script, no one from Nintendo directly overseeing production, and no faithful adaptation to the source material. Three issues that most likely will not occur with the upcoming film, as Shigeru Miyamoto, the father of Mario, confirmed that he will be head of the project.
@collinharris4848
@collinharris4848 5 лет назад
He's criticising the messages of these movies. Someone else who replied to you made a point about how these movies do have morals, which is what I think you're getting at. However, these movies don't have important messages. A message doesn't matter when it's something so basic and lazy as "be yourself" "family is good". Anyone can do that. But a good moral is for example, Fantastic Mr. Fox, that being not everything turns out to be your perfect little dream and that nothing comes from nothing. I personally have become a subtly different person than I was after I saw that movie. But the Boss Baby is not going to have an impact on me. I know family's important, everyone says it all the time: because it's easy. You don't need to do research on this topic, it's simple knowledge. You can't just say a message, you have to make it mean something, to make them care.
@karthikswaminathan6205
@karthikswaminathan6205 5 лет назад
Beta Sword I think what Karsten was saying is that corporations are just luring kids to the theaters, without much thought or soul put into the actual movie. The emoji movie, angry birds, or the Mario movie are obvious money grabs. A movie about a rat learning to cook in Paris is a bigger risk that is less likely to get kids to come and see it.

Video essays is a format that suggest us that the content creator knows what he is saying. I have an impression that your video doesn't live up to that. 1. Animation is not a genre. It is a medium. You cannot tell me that Coco, Loving Vincent, Wall-E and Sausage bloody Party are the same genre. They do not tell stories on similar topics, do not have the same themes and do not have similar aesthetics. They belong to different genres. The only thing shared is the medium. You also seem to treat animated films like a 'kids genre' which is worse. 2. You haven't seen Pirates! and you count it as trash, you judgemental bastard (jk, I don't insult people, I'm a good person). Pirates! is brilliant. Not a masterpiece but extremely enjoyable silly fun. I haven't seen Boss Baby and Surfs Up and emoji and I am almost sure I won't like but I'm not the one doing the essey about animation. And I have actually read the premises and reviews and trailers. 3. You doesn't really tell us why you think these films are bad. I have never seen the Boss Baby but the premise seems that it is about a kid who is getting used to being a brother. Told in a silly way to make kids understand and identify with the situation. It is important for them. The movie probably tells a story with a moral too. 3. At the end you forgot about Laika and Ghibli. You remembered Sony and forgot about Laika. How. 4. (nitpicking) The animation of the Boss Baby seems good, better-than-average good. Maybe the storytelling or the tone aren't. But there are another words for that. Not the best choice of words in the title. To sum up you need to know what you are saying and need to do a research to make a video. And watch the stuff you talk about.

I also really dislike the "movies in my age were better" sentiment, because that's just completely wrong. Just in the past few years we've had movies like Coco, Moana, Inside Out, Zootopia, How to Train Your Dragon, plus many more. All of these movies I would argue tackle new topics that haven't been touched before. Like Coco and Moana both discuss the issues of family vs. personal ambition, while wrapping them in cultures that have rarely been featured in films to date. Zootopia talked about racism and discrimination, something that has never really ever been featured in family movies, and Inside Out talks about the importance of and complexity of human emotions in a way that is more nuanced than ever before.

I know Coco was hands down the best animated movie, but you’re very wrongfully looking over Breadwinner as an animation that was nominated the same year. There’s also countless other animations that go unnoticed. The issue, in my mind, doesn’t come with the fact that we fund and propagate comedy garbage animation, but rather that we ignore impactful animation done by indie movements and don’t give them our money instead. Just look outside of the mainstream and you’ll find more to support, companies won’t change if they’re just about making money.

Well, he specifically said "with mainstream appeal". Whether or not The Breadwinner was great, it wasn't exactly a theater juggernaut like any of the other nominees were.

Coco sucks. 90% of the movie is the main kid looking at stuff in awe with his mouth agape.

Okay I agree with almost all of this but the pirates film was fucking great since the animation was done by aardman studios that created Wallace and Gromit. Lots of smart well timed jokes and strong stopmotion animation
