Ah, the frustration when you discover that you're painting you way further and further into unsalvageable territory, but you just can't seem to stop yourself! I know this one by heart. :P But yeah, like my art teacher says: "Don't paint over! Paint through! Don't paint over, just paint on!" She has this thing where she says that if you paint to fix a specific mistake, you'll make it worse, or "best case" straighten it up but overwork it, which is just another mistake, tbh, while if you ignore the mistake and work *around* it, most often it will sneakily fix itself organically during your process. This is of course easier to do with opaque media, but I've still found her process very inspiring and try to learn from it. I am really thankful when artists on SoMe share the struggle, like you just did. It is so important to share that we all have our crashes, and it's really nbd. We have to learn not to let ourselves get defeated by any drawing or painting.
Thank you for posting this.. So true.. Doesn't help that we are our own worst critics and often 1st to put ourselves down.. But its true.. Oftentimes the mistakes work themselves out or present you an opportunity later that makes it work, and often you're the only one who notices it LoL 👍👍🤗🤗💯💯
When a mistake becomes something better than you ever expected. I’ve done this in music. Put a note in the wrong place, chosen the wrong instrument and bam! Something ace happened ! “Happy accident” they call it 💖
It’s actually refreshing to see mess ups because it’s something artist actually go through. Sometimes watching youtubers that don’t make mistakes makes me feel inadequate so I totally love that you posted this anyways. Plus that’s what a sketchbook is for!! Testing out new techniques and seeing what works and what doesn’t. Keep up the great work tori! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s video 💕🤩☺️
isn't the whole point of using a sketchbook is to make mistakes and learn from them and keep going? and try new things, see what works and what doesn't? it sounds like you're right on track ;)
I actually learned an interesting quote from a recent anime I was watching and that is... A single failure and a single success are the same thing. It's how you handle it later. In any event, as long as you strive to better your work I'm sure you'll make art that you'll be proud of. And I know it's SUPER cliché to say but a sketchbook is personal and it is more for you than it is for us. (kinda like expressing your thoughts) So if it's a disjointed or an ugly drawing then so be it! Who are we to judge on something so personal. Art is always going to be subjective, sketch or finished realized piece or otherwise.
I love how you kept on using the drawing to test more things, you didn't abandon when the face reached critical mistakes point. Really loving these videos :)
I think the quote is something like, "when you open up the dam you will encounter some stagnant water before it runs clear." Basically once you've stopped for a while you have to push through the bad stuff that comes out until it's what you want.
Haha! I totally felt that frustrating moment of trying to salvage the inevitable. It does happen, especially when doing watercolor. Also, I also relate to trying to use up all paints in the palette before reusing them for new paints. It's challenging trying to make new art from those old set of colors. Thank you for being an inspiration in pushing forward despite set backs. Your growth in art really moves us all. I love you Tori~
I appreciate you sharing videos like this, sometimes from a relatable standpoint they’re the most encouraging! It’s encouraging to know that you have bad art days too. 🖤 Comforts the blow of when I have bad art days.
Doven Art let’s shoo those bad vibes away, what a day. Btw!!! I had to order a special glue for that special gift you gave me 😀 expect to see it in an upcoming video soon
Sketchbooks are the perfect place for bad art. :D You need the bad art days to get to fantastic art days. And showing this off is good to see and hear for other artists. I appreciate it.
Seeing you work with watercolors so freely as you sketch really gives me the urge to go back to watercolors and inks. I might join you along on this! Lovely piece, even if it wasn't what you imagined, it's great to just get some things out!
Thank you for still posting this even tho you didnt like how it turned out. A lot of social media only show the successes, especially in art. It's good to show people that everyone messes up. I thing this is the quote you were looking for: "We all have 10,000 bad drawings in us."-Walt Stanchfield
Ive been drawing every day in my sketchbook (with the exception of a few days lol) for about.. 5 or 6 years now? It really does get easier over time! Just remember to think of it as a learning and experimenting space and dont beat yourself up if some days your work looks better than others. It is a good practice and im glad youre setting this goal for yourself :)
I struggled with those black and white thoughts too! when ever I feel I "ruined" an awesome start, I ,acknowledge those thoughts as childish and tell myself I completely trust my own capabilities to end up with a piece I am happy with. It has helped me(L) be real and love yourself and your creations what ever that critical voice tells you. Tell it to back of! 😄 you can do it girl!!!
Love how giddy you got over those initial brush strokes of the hair! Whenever that happens in my own work I immediately show my best friend like “LOOOOOOOOOK! I did that! Me! My hands!” 😂 like I can’t even believe myself. And then usually the rest of the piece doesn’t go nearly as well.
it is SO encouraging when artists are open about their struggles and "mess ups"! it's so easy to feel discouraged when you're working on your own, and hearing other artists and folks you look up to talking about their own struggles and mishaps is just! the most encouraging! thanks for sharing! x
I think these types of videos are important. Often the only thing we see are the masterpieces on social media, and it creates an atmosphere of self loathing when we can't be perfect too. Seeing artists we look up to fail on occasion reminds us that we're all human, and bad art days happen. Thank you for posting even if it wasn't your favourite.
For what it's worth, the coloring you chose is stunning! And on a better paper, you might have been able to remove most of the paint and continue layering up, sketchbook paper in most cases doesn't forgive though. I loved the video, as well as this whole new series :)
@@VictoriaGedvillas the black, dark blue, burnt sienna and a touch of purple. I tried it out and have around 12 new very interesting nuances. You made my day :) edit: (thank you!)
Oh no!! I'm sorry you were upset with how today's piece turned out :( I hope your next one will work out better! As artists we have to remember that sometimes the things we make just don't turn out the way we want them, and the best thing to do is just keep creating and try again!! I enjoyed today's video anyway :) my favorite parts are her intense gaze and the gouache(?) + pen detailing you added at the very end. I hope you have a good night!
The reason I love to see these types of challenges because you inevitably hit days where you stumble, but if you keep going, you still win. Bonus points for learning along the way and fueling growth. Cannot imagine doing daily videos, though - daily art is tough enough! Way to go, Tori! Looking forward to seeing how this series progresses - I'm loving it so far 😊 I'll try to work in my sketchbook at least a little each day with you!
Yay! I loved this video. It was actually an encouragement to me to keep my head up even when things don’t go planned. The reality of life is that moments like that will happen. Thanks for being real and sharing your moment with us.
Hey your work is still looking awesome sometimes mistakes happens and sometimes they make our work more interesting. Great work Tori. For me some mistakes make the work more interesting! JB here ✌🏾
You say you had a bad art day and then in the end you just casually throw in that little sketch, and my mind is blown :D But i'm so glad for this vid (for the whole series, it is throwing me into the mood of wanting to paint again). YT is full of these wonderful masterpieces done by artists, and although i learn a lot from them, it gets overwhelming after a while, when you try them and yours don't turn out that awesome. But seeing that someone with your talent can have a train wreck now and then, it's so soothing. It gives me power again to go on. I'm so excited for this series, thank you for letting us accompany you on this journey.
Funnily enough, I'm also in a challenge to post a sketch daily since Sunday on my instagram account and I've always had this habit to play your videos while working. Love your videos and your voice so much!!
i ate breakfast while watching this, so no drawing, but i'll tell you about what i do currently: searching for ways to stay creative when my burnout (not with art, just all over mental and physical burnout) won't let me draw like i normally do. so far i have painted some rainbows, gradients, and overlapping circles in blues and purples. i need to make something happen with pens or paints, otherwise i get real sad. so this is the journey i am on currently!
It was so brave and amazing from you to share this with us. Your honesty is refreshing. It's comforting to know even the artists we look up to makes "bad art" but i must say you did an amazing job saving it although i think the sketchbook is the problem here, the colors looks different on it.
Hey, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I honestly thought the end result of this piece was so pretty and inspiring! Sure, there were ups and downs but hooray to you for sticking with her cause she turned out so cool!! :) x
I don't think people mind you mentioning if you think you messed up some part! It's not negativity, it makes your paintings sound more real because you share what you honestly think rather than always saying everything went well and is perfect and yeah. And of course it makes you being proud of the good parts more fun too (Idk does that make any sense haha) Also I looove her hair!!
Thanks for uploading this! It's good to see that everyone has off days or off sketches. This happened to me in my video last week. I didn't say much about it but I got back into my sketchbook and tried again. Even if we deem things failures it's really not, any progress is good progress and you can't grow without mistakes or feeling like you need to improve your work. Love you Tori! 🖤
this piece turned out so beautifully even though it felt like you struggled, I'm so excited whenever you start a new challenge because I know I'll get a video from you every day. I drew with you today and with inspiration from you I'm starting a sketchbook challenge series on my channel hopefully to get me drawing every day with all the time I have off.
Can you make a video about the things you use for this channel? like the brushes, kind of paper or sketchbook, it would be amazing your art it's so beautiful💛
I recently started watching Juicy Ink videos and then this channel as well. I absolutely love your paintings and aspire to be able to paint as well as you do. The way you understand colors and shapes is exceptional and I especially love the lighter, more cheerful themes in your paintings. Your enthusiasm and happiness is contagious! I wish I could afford paint. The only watercolors I've used for experience is the cheapest on the shelf. I come from South Africa and the Rand to Dollar was never good. The Rand to anything is not good😂 So I'm starting to save up money for a set that I can do anything with. Do you have any proposals? I also am unsure of quality books/paper to paint in and I don't know if I could reuse my older oil paintbrushes for painting watercolor? Would really appreciate and love to hear from you! Being RU-vid famous might make my comment invisible, but I'll always support your works on this channel. (These videos are my guilty pleasure between study breaks) 😃❤🌷
Currently finishing up a digital drawing so I can finish my painting! And I’m going through the same thing with my painting, I kinda muddied up the face but I’m gonna push on through 💪🏽 but your paintings were beautiful!✨💕
the piece is obv super good but i feel like there's something off that i cant put my finger on, which makes me love it even more bc i end up staring at it for even longer to find what it is and picking up on everything i love abt ur style while im at it
Personally I didn’t even notice a mistake as such. For all I know it could have been a style choice. Either way it all looks great. Art for me is like a rollercoaster. I’m in the try every medium stage and see which feels best, and most of all just enjoy it.
I have a small issue with plastic pallets... After a while I like to have a fresh, clean start and wash them but the pigment stains the plastic and it's hard to get that old, "brand new" look. I'd like to use them more often (I have a porcelain one and I love it but it's heavy and expensive). Have you ever tried to clean a plastic pallet? And of course, lovely art as always! It's sad you had to scrap it... xD... But you know your goals best!
the drawer could be messier lol :p yep bad art def does happen and its something i wish beginner artist (actually any artist) knew more and didn't put so much stress on themselves when it happens
Oh wow, I thought this was a redraw! Boy was I wrong 😂 I love the way that you use yourself as reference for unique paintings. And the quick sketch/painting in the end felt so cathartic to me for some reason. Like before I start a serious drawing, I have to do at least 4 bad sketches or else the finished piece would come out bad/take forever to finish.
Nah, I think you’re fine. 😃 Thank you for being honest with us too! Imo, I think it’s fine to make bad art or admit your mistakes. It’s something to learn from and grow as an artist! 💕👍🏼
Hey!! I'm early and hoping you will see this, do you think that you could revisit turner academy watercolors? Also, doing an overview of recommended art supplies (mainly watercolor?) Last thing (i promiseeee) could you go through your process of watercoloring/drawing humans? I learn a lot from you and I love how you approach paintings (and your style!!)
Oki doki! found the exact comment. You have a lot of requests XD its going to take me a while to do them. At this moment, I'm mainly concerned about surviving the week and just keep drawing. Once I'm at more comfortable pace, I can do focus topic videos within this series. For something super in-depth, I would need a more than one day to produce the video, sorry I can't do it sooner!
This is a really fun series to watch! I’ll have to start getting into some kind of habit too hehe. I actually finished my 7th sketchbook yesterday, so now is a great time to start. Keep gong with your awesome videos!!
I finished the thing I said I'd do yesterday so I'm here for more motivation! But how the heck did you know I was also digging out my dirty palettes looking to get more space to mix!!
Omg it's actually very beautiful! And that little lady in the left with her yellow glasses is so freakin adorable too. She looks like a character in a Wes Anderson film. I commented before watching because I really loved the cute thumbnail title. Yeah. It was actually mind-blowing to see how you dabbed off that so-so face and put on a gorgeous one (in gouache?). Girl, I think you ought to be proud and celebrate this one! Blowing you a kiss from 6 feet away and sending a congratulatory elbow bump
Hey i love your videos😁💞🔥your super talented and your artwork is amazing💞btw i was watching this video while drawing yuu nishinoya from haikyuu. Im not really great at realistic art so i mostly stick to an anime or cartony style but when i do feel confident i try my best to draw or practice drawing in a realistic style. Your such an inspiration thanks💞
I wonder if in times like this where you say it turned out terrible if you could explain why you think it went wrong? A lot of us probably look at this and see something great, so it'd be cool to know if you feel your mistakes were technical, your colours weren't what you were hoping for, the feeling of the piece was off from what you were working towards, etc. I'd be very interested to know if you are willing to share in future videos :)
yeah sometimes art inspiration don't work. it's like it's not connecting well with the creative spirit and just don't come out as how it was in mind. I don't have that many times but if it really feels unsatisfying I just cancel the painting. else I continue on it, finish it and learn from the flaws in it. it belongs to the process until you master the medium and skills. 😊 and even then sometimes the art that been made won't satisfy the artist but everyone else will like it with master artists.
