There were flops then as well. That movie had a lot of hype. DC was still attempting an actual cinematic universe, Will Smith was the lead, there was a new Joker, first film version of Harley Quinn, etc. It had a lot of hype

Alas, we will see no "Wasteland" film now. Still, I'm very appreciative this film exist, and it's not because it's obviously bad or anything that it didn't do well. Just got to be reminded that Mad Max has never been a box office darling, for as influential as it was. Even Fury Road just barely managed to break even when it came out.

I think the problem with Furiosa is no one really wanted/asked for a movie about the character without Charlize Theron and most would prefer to have Mad Max himself in some capacity. It's a mismatch, they could've read the room on this one and had another easy hit on their hands.

Kind of ironic thing in most buddy movies, though. How one actor who plays lead has more looks to be the next big thing, only for the reverse to occur, and it's their "Buddy" with who becomes more relevant than them, leading for the series (if their is one), to make them the focus instead. Seriously, check out almost every buddy movie that came out in the 80s - early 2000s and see which ones which got a sequel and see what I mean.

I genuinely cannot say enough, how awesome it is to see Bad Boys 4 reach the success. My theater was so awesome as an experience watching it. People were losing their minds. I think this is going to have good legs for the next several weeks. Don’t expect much drop off.👏

The fact that 'Bad Boys For Life' had the tag "Ride together. Die Together." makes it even more confusing that they didn't use '"Ride Or Die" for the third film and save "Bad Boys 4 Life" as the most obvious title in the world for the fourth film.

The guy who played Mike Lowry’s (Will Smith’s) son was the true standout in my opinion! He’s definitely going to be a top action star this generation. The scene with Reggie was cool but his movement and fighting style wasn’t executed quite as well. Overall, movie was great and definitely made you like theaters again. I hope they keep this franchise going in the right direction.

Always up in the air with them. Nobody would have guessed "Independence Day: Resurgence" would have done as poorly as it did too, but it seems it was lacking that something. It's kinda fun to see what manages to defy expectations, for better or for worse. Woe to me for Furiosa, but congrats to those who came out for Bad Boys.

It also helps that every other movie I was interested in seeing were only playing 2 times per day. Meanwhile Bad Boys was every 20 minutes. For folks looking to see a movie, Bad Boys was the only real option where I live.

Furiosa is good, even great, but it has some big factors against it: it's an R-rated prequel to a franchise. People have bad (and unjustified) preconceptions about prequels. Besides it leaves out the 13-to-17-years-old demographic. Besides, the Mad Max movies are never big successes. They earn profits because they usually have responsible (small) budgets. Bad Boys is PG-13 (i think), it's a sequel (much less bad audience preconceptions about those), and it's a mix of action and comedy.

A mild correction on The Blue Angels: Its first week was IMAX only. In its second week, most complexes with an IMAX screen moved it off IMAX and had it on a regular screen for week 2. But it also was added to Amazon Prime at the time, so the second week crashed, which is why it lost so many screens for week 3.

Hey Dan, good to see Bad Boys: ROD with a great opening. Garfield held well as well. As for IF, in the words of Bumblebee from last year's Transformers movie; "Don't call it a comeback!" I agree with you. It just keeps chugging along week after week, a stalwart in the top 3. We'll see if it leaps over Garfield this weekend.

It’s amazing that LOTR Extended Editions made the top 10. That just tells you how bad this summer has been. I’m a little conflicted as to whether BB4 is actually a “success” based on 2020’s number and the up/down nature of the forecasts.

Glad to see a mid-budget action/comedy doing good at the box office! In the future, I will not underestimate the power of the Bad Boys franchise. It would be nice if next weekend could have a win with Inside Out 2, but Pixar has been missing in terms of opening weekends. It will most likely have good legs like Elemental and If.

I think Furiosa lost a lot of arthouse screens and independent theaters too. It was showing at all the major independent theaters around me, and most of those are two week engagements unless its a big hit.

It would be cool if you could tally the total box office returns for the entire movie industry (maybe separate Hollywood from China and Bollywood, etc.) in a single year and then determine what percentage of that year's returns went to individual films, this way you could compare movies during doldrums like covid with other successful films in terms of how well they performed despite the overall health of the market varying from year to year. Compare what market percentage a film earned, essentially, like Top Gun Maverick vs Force Awakens for example.

Mr. Murrell, I love your consistency and always digging into the details. I also agree with your decision to drop videos earlier. I’m a huge fan! One thing I might add (but feel free to totally ignore my suggestion), on your “Road to Recovery” chart. It would be neat if you had total for each line (like a year-to-date total). i.e. At this point, 2015-2019 was at $3.8 billion versus 2021-2023 was at $1.7 billion. And, if you wanted to break out the year-to-date weekly average box office, you could simply divide that total figure by 23….or whatever week you happen to be on. P.S. I’m totally guessing at the numbers in my example. But, I just thought that might be a neat stat for some of us uber-nerds within the community. I wish you well Sir! P.S. You could simply run those stats on a different excel tab (in order to keep your chart clean). But, the information would be there if you ever wanted to mention it, or if it brought insight into how drastically everything has changed over the years. You are the best!!

I feel like the ”road to recovery”-chart is becoming more and more obsolete. I think that if you really wanted to show where we are in comparison to the years of the pandemic, you should also do a line chart with all the years 2020-2024 in individual graphs. I’d be interested in seeing that

It works fine as an average. 2020 goes basically flat after March and 2021 is mostly flat with tiny bumps until June, so seeing on their own isn't particularly interesting (he's been doing the chart since 2020 so you can see them separated on older shows). An average also helps smooth out one-off distortions like Endgame and No Way Home.

@@troyen3869 I get that, but it still doesn’t tell me much of how we are doing this year compared to the others. The spikes like barbie and top gun in some years makes the early 2021 and 2020 look a lot better than they actually are, and maybe making a year like 2022 seem a lot worse. I do think there is a point in going over something like that every once in a while

Dan, do you have any insight into why LOTR ran Sat-Mon rather than Fri-Sun? I skipped the whole thing because I’m a completionist and I couldn’t stay up until nearly midnight on a Monday. Seems like if they had done Friday-Sun, they could have had three spots in the top 10

You have pointed out that there needs to be consistent good releases of films for theaters to survive, not just a few hits here and there. I'm not optimistic for this year, especially with Alamo Drafthouse closing. Only a few theaters will survive due to being able to live on debt thss far. Perhaps you could look at the level of debt the theater chains are in right now, and how much they will need in profit to live on?

Seems like an unusually lopsided week: Bad Boys by itself appears to be significantly larger than the rest of the slate. That is probably enhanced by the strike/lockout. There need to be more movies in the hopper further down the road...
