The Digitakt is a great machine but I sold mine. Actually, I've bought and sold two. It's not because it's a bad machine, it's because in my setup it was too redundant. I have a MPC One and a TR8s and the Digitakt just wasn't needed. Also, the MPC One can do a lot of stuff that the DT can't. My main gripe about the DT is the lack of timestretch. That said, the DT is an excellent machine and I think the form factor is just about perfect. It's also a hell of a lot easier to learn and use than the Octatrack.

"Nukes and grannies" :) And yeah, after wanting one since they first came out, I bought a used Elektron Analog Four. Wobbly knobs, flat sound, clumsy work-flow etc .... I was expecting a 10 out of Elektron, but now that I've owned one (and sold it,) I would give them a four.

OP1 next please! Anyways glad to see somebody approaching it with a critical style rather than only trying to justify the massive price. When you can for example buy a midi controller and an ipad and apps that turn it to a music making beast that can do more than a digitakt or op1 and for about half their price you really start to question... Sure these devices have that tactile feel and the aesthetics are on point but these are all computers at the end of the day and a pc/ipad can do everything a digitakt does better for a better price with the right software and midi controllers also you get a device that you can do other stuff besides music! But I also understand why elektron/teenage engineering devices are overpriced after all they appeal to a much smaller audience compared to general computers so if they wanna make money the profit has to be high per unit too.

You either really vibe with the elektron work flow or you hate it. Its not for everyone. I like the digitakt but wouldn’t be able to work with say an octa. Especially the mk1. i think for the money it makes a great central control of a 2/3 machine dawless set up altho it can support up to 8 if say you just do dawless jamming for fun. Its also very portable. Its a great grrovebox and drum machine imo as well.

I can't say for sure but I do believe that not everybody will be happy about this one

Alright, I've never had a suggestion, but this one made me think of a REAL piece of bad gear. The Akai MPX8 / MPX16. Without a doubt THE WORST piece of equipment I have, I literally can't give it away.

This pandemic is really screwing up my sense of time. I didn't think it was April 1st already.

I admit, I'm an Elektron virgin. My first purchase was the Model:Samples based on the strength of Stimming's review. There seems to be a special nature to the Elektron workflow and people who know it inside and out seem to love it for what it is. I haven't familiarized myself with the Model:Samples enough yet to know whether I like that workflow, but I'm pretty sure I do. The M:S is an absolutely amazing machine for its (admittedly discounted) price and you cannot go wrong with buying one for $299. I think it's a damn steal. The thing has a way of making me want to play with it and I often find myself fairly shocked at what it can do. If Elekton's more expensive stuff is as good as it seems, then I think they're probably worth buying. It seems like opinions heavily depend upon whether they like the Elektron workflow or not. I rather like it. It's one of the most intuitive instruments I've ever owned.

First off-- that boombap beat you threw together is dope as hell. Secondly.. I feel like the Digitakt is insanely overpriced, for what it does/can do. It's now $60 more than the Akai MPC One. It used to be about the same price until everything went up. Digitakt: - audio tracks are monophonic - midi tracks are polyphonic, but you need external hardware (and only 4 notes per track) - basically a "9-track sequencer" if you think about it-- the audio track (8 sounds, with sample locks, etc), plus 8 four-note midi tracks - Chance / Probability (HUGE plus) - mildly confusing screen - no touch-sensitive pads (same-feel step buttons, as function buttons) - step / chromatic layout (a little confusing for some) - no timestretch - 64mb of sample storage (per project) - 128 total patterns (per project) - sampling directly into it - great effects - 64-step sequencer MPC One: - way more than 64-step sequencer - drumkits alone, are essentially 128 audio tracks (polyphonic, if you want) - 128 MIDI tracks (per Sequence / Project) - 8 linear audio tracks (per Sequence / Project) - detailed, full-color screen (touch if you want... you don't need to touch it, most of the time) - touch-sensitive pads (classic 4x4 grid) - polyphonic sequencing (internally or externally), more than 4 notes - monophonic sequencing (internally / externally) - timestretch / looping mode - 2GB of onboard RAM - SD card storage (up to 512GB, I think, maybe more) - sampling directly into it - built-in plugins (quite nice-sounding!) - great effects - configurable XY fx (with touchscreen) - scale mode for melodic instruments or plugins - chord mode (plus, input your own chord sets!) - step-sequencing (not as intuitive as Elektron's, of course) I like Elektron stuff a lot. I own a Model:Samples, which satisfies my cravings for chance/probability sequencing. It has two less tracks than the Digitakt, and no sampling... but, it's only $300. Transferring samples is pretty easy, via a computer. And while I wish the font was a LOT smaller when browsing for samples... (hello Elektron??), it truly does a great job. If you're craving a Digitakt... go straight for the MPC One and save yourself a few bucks. It's totally worth it. And this is coming from a longtime Akai hater. I LOVE my One. Every time I watch videos on the Digitakt, I just don't find it worth the insanely high asking price. It should be $500, not $860. And what it does, it does well.... but... I don't know. It needs some more firmware updates to make it worth the asking price.

All of the complaints on the BAD GEAR check seemed the same, but "this was like programming a Commodore 64 with boxing gloves on." was a unique lol. Complaints aside, all my favourite youtubers love this thing, so by transitive property, I love this thing.

You should check out the Model:Cycles. It's a dumbed down Digitone that has a distinct and very limited audio palette. I still struggle to get it to sound good in my setups.

I'm always considering selling my digitakt when i look at it on paper and how limited it is. But then i load it up and start jamming with it & quickly forget others opinions. It's FUN FUN FUN! the most fun piece of gear I own.

I wonder what AuidoPlz would think of the way Elektron didn't abandon this gear, but instead took criticisms like this, and released OS version 1.50 with all (or at least almost all) of these fixed! Come on guys, give Elektron [Digitakt] some love for not just pushing out a "new model" that is just an old hardware with new firmware... They actually improve the product for people that have owned the same hardware for over 5 years!!! Who else does that?

The Elektron workflow will always have its critics, for sure. Their instruments require a bit of patience, but once you get there, it's awesome. I find I don't mind the mono samples, because of the ability to change panning per step (and any setting per step). It beats other samplers hands down with its modulation and trig conditions. Given what some other companies charge for grooveboxes, its price is reasonable, given the quality of the device. I get the hate over the learning curve, and surprising limitations, but frankly they couldn't do everything. It's jumping over to the Elektron way of thinking that leads to "bad gear" quotes. Nice episode!

I just don't understand how something in my pocket "cell phone" can be a tv , game console, music production center, and anything I want it to do! And all for as cheap as $50 or $100 for a name brand. But yet, we CAN'T get even simple features for under $400 and even if you spend $1000 plus it still wont do everything..... meaning there are limits on memory or a decent screen or OS..... It's like they are using computer hardware from 93.....

Thats true... Every gear have even if they are cool and have great features also a DARK SIDE... I had so many things under my fingers in the last 30 years of instruments and other gear.. that i might would say you find bad gear content even in a Waldorf Wave or in a Moog Minimoog Model D.. a Memory Moog is not even less annoying if the Autotune never works as it should do... and a PPG Wave 2.3 so annoying is to program... The bad gong on if you take a JD 800 as a simple sample player with many faders not quite good samples.. easy to program but limitated in what it finally can do...only 6 voice polyphony in full stackmode and the Multitimbral mode is a joke.. Where you get the voices.. every part has if you use full stack patches only 1 !! voice... That not even deserves the word multimode... Anyway.. long talk short sence... ALL GEAR IS BAD SOMEWHERE.. on some the gear is really a joke.. on some only depends on the user what he gets out of it even its maybe worse.. It all depends always on the combinstion of features.. unit workflow.. how it sounds... and finally what the user want to do with it... Keep on going hehe.. I have at least 20 or 30 more bad gear I could recommend you haha... more ?? : Roland VS 880 haha no own sounds.. Korg DW 8000.. Korg Poly 800... Korg 707... Roland MV 30.. and.... Moog Rogue and ARP Axxe... haha.. quite impossible maybe to find them..

I can see both sides here. On one hand this is clearly a highly usable, well sounding instrument that you can do a lot of things with. On the other none of the Elektron instruments work for me, for some reason. Just doesn't click with my meat calculator.

As controversial as Stanley Kubrick. WTG. I have never gotten into Elektron workflow, but couldn't debate that they're powerful. Just didn't want to scratch my head for months after getting their gear. But I'd rather use an Mc-50mk2 and an SP-X0X, any of em than this thing..

Very excited to see this make Bad Gear. I sold my MPC1000 for one of these and regretted the lost functionality....but really enjoyed the sound quality. It has a very finished, ready to release kind of sound. Respect. But I really wasn't having fun with it and needed to move on. Clicky buttons are also bad if you play in a band

Blasphemy!!!!! Although I will admit that they could have at least put a little more storage in there. Or maybe an sd card But I think part of Elektrons philosophy is limitations. I have a computer and DAW if I want endless options. The limitations force me to make the absolute most out of every sample. Elektron gear also taught me that A LOT can be done with just envelopes,velocity and lfo's. It's actually pretty amazing! In our modern world of DAWS and ENDLESS options it's easy to become overwhelmed and completely overlook the smaller, more subtle details of designing sounds. In Ableton, for instance, you'd probably be more likely to take a sample and throw a bunch of effects on it, one after the other w/o even realizing that you can do so much just using the ADSR envelope and other basic sampler settings. I instantly clicked with the Elektron workflow. I guess some people don't and that's understandable. All that said, after trying the Digitakt I quickly acquired the Digitone and the Octatrack too ! So I'm sure part of the reason for the limitations is to incentivize buying the more expensive boxes with more features. Either way, Elektron totally revolutionized my music making process !!!!! Awesome videos . Keep it up !!!

This has been a great episode! The "Eyes Wide Shut" clip. The subject, which is the controversial, Elektron Digitakt. The demonstration that shows that this thing sounds bad-ass. Sure, you have to commit to learning how to operate this magic machine, but that is part of the fun. I don't have one of my own yet, but it is just a matter of time and someone will be needing quick cash on Reverb to get me ordering...

I have to agree . the Digitakt disappoint in many places ... The FXs are good but always the same ... and that Elektron LIMITATION to 8Ch is SOOOOOOooo annoying it's just not enough imo . A lot of people talk about "the Elektron way" when describing a workflow but really it means you have to buy more gear cause we limited your Polyphony . Elektron should go back to the Drawing board and check out the great gears they made in the past like the Machinedrum with 16CH .

For me, Elektron is best compared to Lacoste. You pay 70% because of the name and the remaining 30% hasn't really been worth it in the end when compared to the competition. Elektron is generally completely overpriced and it is obvious that maximum profit is the intention of the manufacturer. I bought the Analog HEAT, for example, because I was very taken with the possibilities. Somehow everything sounded very digital and not at all "warm" or analog as I know it from real analog devices. The Heat tries to fake "analog warmth" with various EQ settings, but the signal is not really "heated". It doesn't even emulate real circuitry. So I returned it and got the OTO Boum instead, which absolutely thrilled me from the first second! It cost me $499, so it's not cheap either, but compared to Elektron, it's worth every penny.

Speaking of self contained production gear... How about the Roland MC 909 Groovebox? It’s a pain to program

I bought it in 2018, with a lot of love and excitement in my heart. It was finally going to be my 'go anywhere, ditch the laptop, MY sampler'. Nope. Couldn't get into it. Could barely get it to make a sound. And I've been making electronic music for over two decades. Watched some videos, read the manual, decided to just dive into it, and nothing. At some point, the Digitakt started to piss me off. Sort of like a malcontented ex: no matter how much attention you pay her/him, it's never enough. Eventually, I returned it to the retailer, even though it actually cost me shipping. Boo. I've since thought about getting it again, but each time I look lovingly at my all software studio, my Akai APC 40 MKII and my classic Roland A-49 controller, and think: oh Digitakt, there is no room for you here. Sad, because the demo tune at 6:05 is a thing of beauty. Excellent video.

OOFTA. Yep... Digitakt is what revived my enjoyment of doing music at all after a long, deep, dark DAW-hole.

Not a fan of the workflow, wish it could have shortcuts on an ipad or something. Seems clunky to get a couple changes out of a track, i feel like you should be able to do a couple changes in quick order. How about assignable midi faders or mute buttons? But in the end it sounds amazing and can do alot, truly impressed when I see someone competent in it. I'd like to know what could it be paired with in improve workflow. An octatrack? Samplers? Love your quick upfront opinions on gear, in 10 min or less lol.

Here's one for a future vid, perhaps: MPC5000...it promises sooo much on paper and yet....plenty of complaints online about it: poorly written/unfinished OS, software bugs, terrible storage logic, random midi glitches, and lots more! Although if you obtain one for the show it will of course work perfectly! ;)

I replaced the digitakt with a 10 year old MacBook Pro running FXPansion's Geist and a cheap used midi controller. Total cost....$140. (to be fair I already had a Geist license so I didn't calculate that into the price) Suck on that Elektron.

EVERYTHING Elektron produced ever since has been insanely overpriced and understocked. Back in the early 2000s i wanted to save for an Electron Monomachine because i loved the variation of synth engines. But it was way too expensive for my very limited budget. And nowdays you cannot even really get one used. But i don't care anymore since i got myself an Arturia Microfreak which has all that i needed and it was insanely affordable. Sometimes all you need is a bit of patience. Even if it takes ca. 17 years.
