Amazing snare on that thing. I actually know the guy tasked with doing the original demo of the KPR-77 (Don Muro). You can find his demo on RU-vid. I'll have to send him your (uh-hum) tribute. 😜

I really like the Korg analogue sound but never came face to face with one of these. I’ve got a MiniPops Jnr I keep meaning to add triggers to, you can definitely tell they are related, but I’m sad these aren’t cheaper. Please don’t ever stop doing these - this really is my “weekend is here” gong. It kicks the “work” out of me and makes me want to get down to some tunes.

The Acid groove here is delightfully AFXish. Great work as always.

That snare sounds very suspiciously like the Volca Beats. Actually many of the sounds do. I have to believe that some of this old timer's DNA ended up in the Volca product many years later.

I love seeing the gear reviewed that i only saw in magazines ages ago and have forgotten about. I lived in a small town at the time and the best we had was a guitar shop with expensive synths and only one or two drum machines at a time.

The KPR-77 has my favourite handclap sound of all time. Metallic and not sounding much at all like a handclap by itself, but really works in a mix.

Safe to say AudioPilz has Bad GAS (and it's contagious). This episode makes me hope for a future retro collab with LMNC. Bad Gear DIY!

I had one of these and gave it to a buddy when I moved stateside back in 1992. Bought it used for peanuts. I always thought it sounded like crap but then again most of my efforts at music production sounded that way too 😀 As always, in the hands of a talented musician, these machines come to life. Nice work and good memories..

Nooooooo! One of my first and most beloved drum machines makes the Bad Gear list. I need to rethink my life choices.

I had one of these with the grey carry bag, always liked the character of the sounds - especially those super interesting metallic hats. Thankfully I sampled everything before I sold it!

A friend lent me one back in '86 before I bought my 606. I still love the snare on the 77 and so when I bought my 606 I was disappointed to find it was not as beefy as the 77 snare. However, I was never that enamoured with the hats and cymbal on the 77 preferring the 606 instead. Great video, demo and choice of bad gear Florian, thanks.

I love "Wintage" gear! Seriously though, I love your videos. Your sense of humor and amazing compositions never disappoint. You make the kind of retro jams my buddy and I would geek over back in simpler days.

In the late 90s when I was doing my all-analogue (mostly) (well, all non-computer) music, I owned two KPR-77 units synced via a KMS-30, (which I still have) to the master clock (a CSQ-600) (which I still want to get rid of, in London, if someone will take the SH-09 with it). The only thing I used the KPR-77 for was the pair of trigger outs on each, which are s-trig, used to clock an SQ-10 and trig an MS-10 and MS-20. I never used it for the sounds (matchbox snare) because I had a TR-808 and TR-606, but also because programming in the trigs on the pair of KPR-77s was about enough work for one decade thanks.

Still rooting for the Korg Monotribe to be covered, amazing potential (all analog groovebox goodness) held back by a weak as all heck kick and no way to enter notes on the synth than the monotron-esque ribbon controller. Sounds amazing in its element though.

6:50 - This track/video gave me solid flashbacks of the film Pi (1998) by Darren Aronofsky , which had black & white elements and a great soundtrack.

Nnnnoooo!!! I love the KPR-77 - analogue, but with a different tone to the Roland TR series. It has a much more sophisticated sequencer than the 606 and 808, albeit without the immediacy. The sync thing is not a problem when connecting to Roland kit, just set the time signature to 2/4 and you still have the same number of steps per pattern. The hate seems to stem from the terrible manual, a classic of badly translated Japanese that I tried to alleviate by posting a quick programming guide online back in the 1990s (and which can still be found on the KPR's Vintage Synth webpage).

That whole user review saying it "MIMICK PETER CRISS'S STYLE..." had me rolling XD

My first "real" drum machine! Bought it when it came out in the early 80's and it was at least a step up from the Synsonic drum pads I was using up to that time. Ditched it not too long after because it didn't have MIDI and back then if it didn't have midi, it wasn't worth keeping. :-(

There is actually a midi kit available for the KPR-77, which is somehow basic but quite cheap. Maybe an idea for a Better Gear episode?

Its funny, in the 90s the TR-606 was considered to be bad gear, like a poor man's TR-808 and you could buy them for nothing. Korg never had (or should that be has) much success making drum machines, other than WAY back with the Minipops of the 60s-mid 70s. Could a minipops be a future candidate for Bad Gear? Anyway I like the sound of the KPR-77, but not sure why they called it that, sounds clumsy (oh, hang on Korg Programmable Rhythm). I think it is easier, cheaper and better just to use samples in 2021 though. There is something about the sound, particularly the snare, that sounds kind of organic compared to the 606, 808 or 909 :-)
