Ja, this audio pilz has a really bad Klugscheißer Attitude. It's really annoying listening to his speech... In every video the same approach of criticism 😂😂 I unsubscribe... It's better for mental health
@vedabou great for what was a noob me. It wasn't cheap but it wasn't unaffordable. I got it as my highschool graduation gift in 2021. Originally did cybersecurity then switched to EE in 2023
What crazy cosmic timing - I literally ordered one of these 2 days ago - it's still in the mail! - and lo and behold, this video from one of my favorite gear channels. Even with the small gripes expressed in this video (I agreee that slightly higher polyphony would be nice, yes) I still absolutely love the tones and the interface and I'm so excited to start messing around with it!
@@htechdance Lmao. Really? We’re qualifying me calling the Minilogue xd a great synth? lol. It IS a great synth. I have a Take 5, by the way. And will soon be getting the TEO 5. I’ll have all three. Calling the Minilogue xd an “okay synth” is ridiculous. Let’s keep it going, in the spirit of you. Take 5 is an okay synth. 3rd Wave is a great synth. See the pointlessness of your comment?
Thanks for covering this "bad gear," it's always nice seeing what you have to say about these machines! The XD is great, but it really shines when you sync it to grooveboxes or a drum machine. I noticed none of the visual examples of the synth show its sequencer running at a non-default resolution: you can get a lot out of it by (i.e.) turning down the resolution to 1 step per bar and having 16 steps of pad/arp/chord motion sequenced...all before you even consider the FX chain! If you're using it for its sequencing, the 4 motion lanes that control almost anything give you back a lot of what you lose in traditional modulation.
I agree completely with your conclusion and your comment about fitting it into a mix. No idea how they managed to take the punch and clarity out of analog, but there it is.
Maybe it's the result of digitising it. You don't get to hear the analog parts directly, You only get to hear it digitised then converted back to audio, after the effects section. My main gripe is that the saved patches don't contain all the information for the digital oscillators, so if I make a patch I like with those involved and save it, what I load back next time can be quite different. I really liked it at first, and still have it, but that's put me off playing it for some time now.
@@TooSlowTubeThat's odd, I've had one since they came out and over the last year I've been mostly using the digital oscillator, partly because it never goes out of tune and partly because I had made about as many unique analog patches as I could with that synth architecture...but I never have had issues with the patch loading differently from the time before. Might be an issue to contact Korg support about.
@@TooSlowTube It's not the result of digitizing anything. You don't get to hear analog "directly" no matter what unless you're listening to the analog outs through an analog mixer on your speakers or headphones. By the time audio is in your DAW, or you're listening to it on Spotify or Bandcamp, you're hearing it digitized. It doesn't matter. As long as you're using a reasonable bit depth like 16-bit or higher, it's more or less perfectly reproduced within the bandwidth the sample rate allows, according to Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem (at least as far as human hearing can detect), with some quantization noise floor depending on the bit depth (at 24-bit or higher, you're not hearing this unless your monitoring is ludicrously loud, especially while other sounds are playing).
@@cornoc I don't use a DAW for any of that, only to host Ctrlr for setting up MIDI controllers to control hardware, or occasionally to play free VST instruments. So, yes, normally if I play an analog synth what I'm hearing is analog, not digitised.
My go-to synth for years. Its simplicity and versatility are its strength. But I think its versatility comes mainly from its user oscillator, and I would never bought one without that huge feature. Tom Shoebridge's OSCs are awesome, among others. It's a multi genre synth. I constantly find ideas with just by browsing sounds, tweaking knobs and effects etc. 80% of my jams use at last one XD. It's so good that I acquired a second one recently. Not only it doubles the polyphony in polychain mode but I got to reuse the user oscillators I bought. Yes, modulation is limited. But that's enough for making great jams/prods. Love that tiny hybrid synth!! Thanks for that video, because I do think it's still underrated. And I love the key bed (the keys size especially). It's a great synth when you are a beginners, it's still a fun guy when you're a seasoned home studio enthusiast, IMHO.
Im planing to buy another used module, to tower them ontop of eachother xD. it will be more flexible than a bi-timbral prologue, cause each can be tweak, motion/sequence independently, but most importantly, the footprint of one is good enough to be taken to the couch to do chill sound design
@@benox50 Exactly! Although at the beginning I wish I had gone for the Prologue, I don't regret my choice of 2 XDs instead. I have the XD module just above the keyed XD, perfect!
For me, it comes down to whether you vibe with the filters or not. It's got everything you'd want in an entry-level analog synth (excuse me, I meant to say it ticks all the boxes), but the filters are weirdly cold to my ears. It's grown on me, but I keep going back to my DW8000 when I want "warm" or even "fat."
my current main synth! i love the dark energy you are pulling out of it, you always seem to get the character of a synth to the forefront and i cant wait to try out matching some of those textures. with this vid , the es-1 and the volcas u've got all my korg gear covered (until i get into some debt and purchase the microkorg 2....)
So glad you mentioned the open architecture which encourages 3rd party developers. That’s the secret sauce to unlocking the XD & prologue’s secret potential.
100% found the sweet spot with the final jam! the first jam was reminding me of a Big Black Delta tune. Thanks for the usual Friday midday bad gear boost!
Another fantastic episode, this time on my FAVORITE piece of gear... you can have my XD module when you can pry it from my cold dead fingers! That being said, I understand the lack of LFO options, and the limited sequencer ticking the box, but not the needs of sound designers. Personally, I find the analog sources mixed with the digital effects to be a great combination. I just wish I could make songs as clean as Florian does.
One great solution to thicken up the supposed thin sound is to get the free user oscillator called duet. Gives you 2 tunable LFOs with Pwm for both as well. After getting it, I can make it sound like a prophet 6. It's wild.
The great thing about the logue's SDK (software development kit) is that it is open. So you can develop plugins yourself (if you know a programming language) and upload them for free.
I use to be a metal guitarist until I discovered your channel! Bad gear is a good buyers guide to get into this stuff! Very fun vids. Don't have an XD but recently got an original minilogue which I love, along with a used Circuit, and a Donner B1 to go with the monotribe I got years ago but only recently figured out how to use it :D
Great episode. Another one of the “not so bad gear” ones!!! I loved my XD. I exchanged it with a vintage MS-10 back in the days, after training on it. It was my 1st real synth with “knobs” and it was an inspiring and versatile one. Thank you Korg for this accessible and cool little black beast. Btw it was used by many electronic techno music makers like Colyn, Ben Bohmer and Kink 😎😎😎
The whole Minilogue/Monologue series of synths seem to have a dull sounding filter. I can't use my Monologue for anything as the sound just doesn't sit in the mix at all, no matter how long I tweak it. Other synths give instant great results that sit in the mix, but not the Korg...
It is hard to complain about this thing given the sound options it offers on multiple levels for a pretty great price. I guess the complaining needs to be left to professional synth complainers.
Being a drummer, I bought one, along with the deck saver, as a versatile spontaneous addition to guitars and singers. Because i can easily throw it into my back pack on the way to rehearsal room.
Covers al the bases, is polyphonic (enough), affordable and expandable. It even has a character of its own which is rare these days. So one could do a lot worse when choosing It as a first synth. Me like!
i bought it as a beginner synth but also with the excuse that i could program my own patches like with the daisy development platform, but its been so much fun to use i havent even gotten to doing that yet
I ended up selling mine after almost 3 years of trying to use the XD as my main synth. It is good thing for what it is, nothing more. Now I'm enjoying using my Novation Peak instead, and guess what, with the peak it happened organically. That what I call a true relationship 💪🏻
I realize that one of the main reasons why I watch Bad Gear is because it kind of gives me a nice buzz for the weekend, without having to revert to psychoactive substances.
minilogue XD is the real king korg, when it comes to mini synths. analog, affordable, versatile, sound quality. of course you can't expect to function like a $1500 synth.
The user oscillators are amazing. Despite the limited capacity of the hardware developers have made wonders. Just now someone ported most of Mutable Instruments Braids to it. Tim Shoebridge's Vector oscillator is pure gold. Modulation is annoyingly limited. With my Prologue I use the Copilot Broadcast pedal, which is a tap tempo LFO with expression pedal and cv output. And with many waveforms.
love the melodic playing. i did buy mine partially for the joystick though 😆 i thought i was the only one thinking it was lacking a bit of punch and grit for an analog synth. thanks for the episode!
Sure its missing some high end, and some low end... And some punch... But i love my XD its just so cute ❤❤❤ its all in one, does nothing perfectly but kinda does everything
You've covered the Monologue, Minilogue, Drumlogue, and Minilogue XD. Now you must review a Prologue to finish the pentalogy, and your training will be complete.
Wow! 2 bad gear videos in a row of gear I own, and almost good respect by AudioPilz for them. I just need to remove the dust covers of the Circuit Tracks and Minilogue XD and make them play together again.
Here in the States Korg has sold many shipping container loads of Minilogue XDs. I believe it's currently the biggest seller in their line. I think the XD is okay as a beginner's synth, but sound and function wise it's crippled by compromises.
