Bad Jet Approach into Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Should Have Gone Around!

This is out first flight outside the US in our jet and was a huge learning experience for us navigating the additional requirements. The long over-water flight required some planning and additional survival gear...just in case.
I got some great gouge from Honda Aircraft Company's Chief Pilot to include a video of his approach into Beef Island, but candidly, I flew a terrible approach when transitioning to the visual portion. I left it in the video but I desperately want a do-over on that one.
We flew down to Fort Lauderdale (KFXE) the night before and using Banyan Aviation was a huge help - not only are they one of the very best FBOs in the country but absolutely one of the top HondaJet Service Centers in the US.

Start your turn earlier when the wind is pushing you wide, and keep your turn continuously in a circle. When you are level before your turn, start to slow down to your first notch of flaps and LDG speed. Look for a landing spot and draw an imaginary line from your jet to that and make your descent down that line.

Strictly USAF-Navy jargon. Last I head it was on the C.W. Lemoine show. He, "Mover," was talking with "Gonky," and "Wombat," and that word came up a couple of times. Gouge is good, no question. While I don't burn kerosene I am a pilot. The last time I flew into an airport for the first time was several years ago. I know a guy that has a very good flight sim setup. I knew I would be flying in at night. I also flew the approach in IMC down to minimums. I also deliberately flew several missed approaches to get some feel of the procedures. I think this is better than watching youtube videos of other pilots flying difficult approaches. This part is the only thing I will be critical about. I have flown some approaches I rather not remember. The one that stands out in my mind happened almost 30 years ago. I was flying a DME Arc approach into my local airport in IMC about 3AM. I was tired and not ready for what happened next. The VOR I was using as I was flying the Arc for some reason stopped transmitting DME data. Center would not allow me to continue and I was directed to climb. I finally did an ILS approach into the PDK airport and got into a hotel. I later learned that VORTAC had a major failure and it was several hours before it got fixed. This also messed up Atlanta arrivals coming from the northeast for several hours.
@bluemaxsix
@bluemaxsix 10 месяцев назад
Yep, you're spot on. We both know that it doesn't matter what you're burning, good planning is good planning. I really appreciate the depth of your comment....so here's what actually 'got me' on that approach. 1) 1 of the approach plates that was required wasn't in the G3000. It's the one where you transition from instruments to visual but still has very specific altitudes, speeds, and way points - just required to be in visual conditions. OK, I can get over that quickly and sort it out. 2) I'm now using the plate on my iPad and not the G3000. 3) I got a GEAR UNSAFE warning on base. It turns out that the gear beat the landing flaps so it was quickly resolved but it was enough to distract me so that I ended up high and wide turning base to final. You appear to be a good pilot so this is where you're saying to yourself "go around" and you'd be correct. 2 factors to consider here 1) big mountain off of the approach end so even though I was in visual conditions, I'd have to execute the missed approach which isn't what I'd call standard 2) the G3000 lost the fuel calculation early in the flight. It was a glitch that's since been sorted out so the jet was telling me I was at zero fuel. I know it was incorrect. I'd pulled out my E6B and manually calculated fuel burn and knew I was good. I even flew at max endurance for the flight to be extra sure. But it was still in the back of my head. So that what got me into the situation where I had to trade off some skill to salvage the approach and why I continued to land. Bottom line - I should have gone around and won't let that happen to me again.

@@bluemaxsix Thank you for that reply. Also thank you for your service. One of my friends is a retired Army Helicopter mechanic. He taught at the school on Ft Eustis. I suspect you have a lot more hours fixed-wing than I do. Right now I am around 2100 hours almost all in Cessna's. I own a Cessna 182. I use mostly flying from Hampton Roads Virginia Fly Fishing in West Virginia. I know how that approach has bugged you. I saw where you said you wanted a do-over! If you have a powerful enough computer and access to the controls I recommend sim flying it for a while. Also if I am not out of line may I be critical of this video so if I am wrong I can learn as can others. My first issue is why did you leave Florida with a fuel system fault? That one still bothers me because I know several people who developed GO fever and later came to regret doing so. The next item why did you leave Florida not knowing you were missing a critical approach plate in the nav system? I understand you are on record as saying this will not happen again and I believe you. I am not attempting to make you angry and I love how you have owned your mistakes. I just think you might well have started that bad approach back on the ground in Florida. Peace!

@@bluemaxsix Honestly, I was trying to remember more about my adventure in Northeast Georgia that night. Gosh, I was so tired that morning. I was mentally exhausted and really should have stayed at the Meridian Mississippi Airport earlier. My first thought when I lost the ODF DME data was my equipment had malfunctioned. So I did a quick change to the Electric City VORTAC ELW and got DME data. After I was told to climb I told center that PDK was my alternate. I also asked for no gyro because I was not operating at my best. IFR conditions were all the way from Alabama across to SC. They helped me with my navigation and got me to Atlanta TRACON airspace and they helped me get on the ILS at PDK. I don't remember the tower being open at that time. I was so tired I later fell asleep waiting for the taxi. That next day I left PDK and still had to fly in IMC, but the ceilings were so high I popped out about 2500 feet and just did a visual. ODF was working properly by then.
