Even then though it takes like multiple decades to actually schedule an execution. Justen Hall for example was executed in 2019 for a crime he committed in 2002 after waiving his appeals and asking them to schedule a date.

It sure does. Let me explain to you why Sovereign Citizens are all wrong: When you were born, your parents consented on your behalf for you to be subject to the laws of the nation in which you were born. Alternately, if you were adopted across international boundaries, your guardians consented on your behalf for you to be subject to the laws of the nation into which you were adopted. You maintain that consent as an adult by choosing to remain a citizen or resident of the nation in which you live.

Sure, PragerU is well-known to be quite supportive of the death penalty, but having preconceived notions about the answer doesn’t really change the question itself. And okay, ideally, it could’ve been asked, “When, if ever, do you think that using the death penalty is moral?” or something like that, but all-in-all, it’s actually surprising how neutrally the question was asked. And even with their known support of the death penalty, I don’t believe they would say that one of the reasons it’s moral is that the convict has to consent to being executed. Admittedly, that may be because they feel people sentenced to death get _too much_ due process, but I still don’t see them making _that_ particular claim.

In theory, I don’t think it’s necessarily wrong to kill people who have proven themselves extremely dangerous. I just don’t trust anyone to wield that kind of power, including the state. The amount of innocent people put to death in the US far exceeds any social benefit of capital punishment, if there is any significant benefit at all. Also, any killing done by the state that isn’t completely necessary just perpetuates the idea that the state has the right to kill, which is dangerous in my opinion.

Nota bene: When I was doing a research paper in a college English composition course, I selected the topic of capital punishment, and I selected "Dead Man Walking" to read, analyze, and react to. The instructor, Sister Winifred, suggested that I watch the major motion picture. I sensed a trap, since a non fiction book that a movie is based upon is always a better source than the major motion picture made from it. Sadly, it wasn't a trap - after reading the book, I was non compos mentis (in a depressedly and hopelessly angry funk) for about a fortnight. And it got worse when I did an interview with (at that time) my state senator from Wisconsin, who said, in response to my question asking how many innocent or wrongly convicted people is it acceptable to execute in order to have the death penalty, that the number of wrongly convicted or innocent people executed in order to have the death penalty had no limit. (This state senator is now the US Representative of the Wisconsin 5th Congressional District.) Praeger U didn't hire this guy, because he was too overqualified for them.

@KonradTheWizzard
@KonradTheWizzard 3 года назад
I would argue that even if this person agrees it would not be moral - someone would have to commit a homicide to execute that person and you could also argue that this person agreeing to their own (premature) death is not in a sound state of mind. Thus the executioner would be killing someone who is mentally ill and needs a very different kind of help. In short I would agree with your initial notion: the death penalty is never moral.
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 3 года назад
You do have folks of sound mind who chose that route. Either as an act of protest to the law (I don't agree with this law, and I'll make you kill me for it), would rather be a martyr (everyone who has ever chosen death over forced conversion, there are no shortage of examples), or they know the price of their crime and find it a just fate (a few spies asking not to be blindfolded to face the firing squad down like men). I'm on the rough opposite end on this particular issue. I'd be happy with a society where sexual assault and corruption while in office get added to murder in our list of capital crimes (I'm aware this is not how the US works, but if it changed tomorrow I'd not complain). It's bad for the convicted, but to me it's the lessor of two evils. Society is a numbers game: you're NEVER getting all of the time and money rehabilitating them back. That effort can be better spent on petty criminals that might actually be a net positive on civilization at the end of the day (or basically anything else). Some, however, take the stance that capital punishment is the easy way out. Why execute someone when you can get 30 years of hard labor out of them? given a choice between 'sitting in a cell for 20 years' 'working to the bone for 20 years' and 'standing against a wall for two minutes'.... I'll take option three. Horrible, but brief.

@@DFX2KX The problem is that people are inevitably going to be convicted of crimes they didn't commit, which means that the state will be executing at least some innocent people. let's close down the prison and let loose all the murderers because it is ridiculously expensive to keep em locked in prison for their entire natural life you have to feed em and pay salary for people to keep watch on em too then

I mean we could just severely limit the things eligible for it, raise the standard for sentencing to it, and go back to a rope-based quick drop&stop system or beheading with a large heavy gravity powered blade. Because there are some people that don't deserve to live after what they've done. I'm talking crimes against humanity, mass murder, serial murder, torture and/or experimentation, etc... Pretty much things that sound like they came from a Nazi camp gets your air privileges revoked.

A bad legal take I heard a decade ago by the teacher in class, was that it was the gouverment applying the dead's right to self-defense.

I do actually recall a specific case where someone deliberately went out and murdered two people for the sole purpose of receiving the death penalty. He chose the least morally abhorrent victims possible (an elderly couple who had lived full, rich lives), shot them, and not only requested capital punishment, but even fought to have his life sentence overturned so he could be executed.

She probably thought it was assisted suicide or lives in another country where that's the case? She is a mermaid apparently so could be Atlantis.

I'll tell Mr.Deity about PragerU's tweet. I'm sure he'll have something to say about a christian university asking if DP is moral. I mean their whole religion is based around someone getting the DP.

Stop calling PragerU a university, they’re not a university! They’re as much of a “university” as you and I are a university! You can’t put on your resume that you “got a degree from PragerU”, there isn’t a PragerU campus where you can go! All Prager “U” is, is a conservative think tank with very shaky morals and funding for their videos that often have completely fabricated or grossely taken out of context statistics.

If killing is immoral then killing in the name of killing is also immoral. How moral is a system that could put to death an innocent person convicted wrongly. If innocent people are sacrificed to a system so that the system can get it right “most” of the time then that system could never be considered moral.

I wonder if what she meant was that everyone who gets executed is part of a population which agrees to death sentences being a legitimate legal sentence by virtue of not fighting to change the law so they're not? Or am I giving too much benefit of doubt here?
