Bad Movie Beatdown: Gone Fishin' (REVIEW) 

This review was originally posted in May 2013, and this is a re-edited version that runs 6m 17s shorter than the original version. This episode was actually replaced very quickly after it premiered because I said "crocodile" instead of "alligator", which meant that I had to redub all uses of the word; that means that the on-camera segments have clear lip-sync errors, and those were not introduced in this re-edit (I remember having to fit the new word in the existing footage was especially troublesome). The following extensive changes were made: - Now upscaled to HD - *New* voiceover for the entirety of the review. This is, again, from the "angry" phase where I was very shouty, very exaggerating my voice, and this alleviates that somewhat. It also has the added effect of making the voiceover segments much shorter and bringing the episode length down. - On-camera segments are re-edited to reduce dragging syllables as best as possible. The editing here was so extensive that actually keeping lip-sync was a bit troublesome, so it may drift out on some spots (in addition to the above). - Film clips are reduced as much as possible. This also applies to voiceover segments, using slowmotion to bridge moments with long continuous shots. - Music has been replaced in intro and outro. Because this was edited from a final cut (I don't have the original edit files), the original background music can be briefly heard in on-camera portions. This one is going back up as it ties with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Jumanji: The Next Level, and The Irishman, and was meant to be up between Christmas and New Year, but I've been struggling with a cold on-and-off, which meant I had to keep putting off doing the new voiceover. Hope you enjoy!

I'm sure Film Brain knows how grateful I am to him for reviewing this movie, as I've thanked him constantly for 10 years. The reason I'm glad that someone spotlighted this movie is because... well, you ever watch a film that leaves you feeling empty? That's what Gone Fishin' did with me, I just walked away feeling empty and embarrassed at the prospect of this movie even existing. Even to this day, it leaves me with a BAD feeling. I don't know what it is about this movie, but it should not exist.

Oh, Gone Fishin'... when will the laughs ever START?

I remember seeing this in the video store back in the day, and even though I knew it was trash I picked it up and was more disappointed that it wasn't a Lethal Weapon spin off. It might have been worth a joke rental then, but I immediately put it back down after reading the description. I have no regrets.

I love fishing, so I saw this ... on cable. My favorite is the restaurant scene where Joe's character doesn't know he's being asked to sample the wine and tells the waiter, "I'm not a little kid. I can drink a full glass."

Assuming they were about ten in the opening scene, these characters are supposed to be about 46?! The actors were 51 and 56 when they made this, and they look older than that! Why didn't they just change the amount of years that had passed so the characters were older?

The “Holy Smoke” line was paid for by the tobacco companies of that day... pushing in the cigar as well ;)

This should've been an animated film starring Donald Duck and Goofy, then it would have been a bit more plausible.

At the end of the movie Gone Fishin' 1997, Joe should get a new car, new boat, fishing equipment such as fishing rods, bait, bait box, hooks and a fishing net. This includes a box of beer for Christmas.

This should be on the list of most idiotic movies Film Brain has ever reviewed, alongside Bear, Art of War 3, and The Alternate (Agent of Death).

My nieces and nephews actually enjoyed fishing and hunting while growing up. My niece bagged an elk and wild turkey on her first outings during elk and turkey season. ...Murica. Tbh though, after seeing Glover in epic works like Lonesome Dove and such to see him in this film is actually physically painful.

You're too young to know if this movie is good. This was a cool movie and worth the watch in '97.

What we now know about JJ in this present day makes Gone Fishin look like a very telling sign of what’s to come with big franchises

Danny Glover would have better success this year with Danny Devito in Jumanji 3 another short actor.

Trust me. Even as someone who lives in Florida I agree with the potshots. My local Fox station (Fox 13) actually has a segment on the news called "Only In Florida" (I'm not making this up)

Um, lots of kids love fishing. I was one of those kids who grew up to be an adult who loves fishing. And we have books on fishing for kids at the library that are rather popular. Not saying that makes this a good movie, it doesn't, just saying that kids do like to fish.

I had heard of "Gone Fishin'" but never knew anything about it until now. I wish I could go back to that.

Fishing is very big with kids even now. My son has a fishing club at his school. Fishing is really good for kids it teaches them patience, there is actual science and skill, also it is a great for a captivated audience to talk.

Willie Nelson was only in this mostly because of the wacky tobaccy.
