It's more than just that, he since said that when he was forced to replace the late Dale Earnhardt he was using the same crew as Dale Senior did. Richard Childres did have a bespoke car and team for him to have him (or at least that was the plan before the tragedy of the 2001 Daytona 500) make his Cup Series debut in Atlanta, which wasn't entered obviously, but it did have crew members who were closer in age to him than the crew he ended up working with. What's more, due to the insane schedule he was forced to run (running full time in both the Busch and Cup Series full time simultaneously), it meant he didn't have time to think about the massive shoes he was filling. It's not that he didn't think that Dale's crew couldn't compete for championships, he just felt that they weren't what he needed to be comfortable
@housesports000

@@SiVlog1989 I mean it's understandable, Sr and his crew were absolutely poised for a 8th title that year but neither them or Harvick obviously knew it was gonna happen once Dale died

Terrible year for Harvick. He was parked by NASCAR and he was the first to be parked by the series since DK Ulrich. Just a frustrating year, Harvick had a lot of success in 2001 but he ruffled a lot of driver's feathers like Bobby Hamilton and Ricky Rudd. But after 2001, he suffered the worst year of his career in 2002 and had a lot of crashes and miscues. He did pull the spin and win in Chicago but other than that the year was trash. 2003 was loads better and he eventually matured and turned into the dominant driver he was meant to be.

Harvick himself on Jr’s podcast said that 2002 was harder for him mentally than ‘01 because the organization had to make different decisions on how they operated because it was his team now and he couldn’t just go to the track and race. In ‘01, he raced a lot of setups that were made for Dale originally, but since he tested those cars- he knew how they ran and got a feel for them. ‘02 saw RCR shift focus for Harvick and he ran cars setup wise that were very different from his predecessor. Additionally, his team personnel were still Earnhardt’s crew, so Harvick felt like it still wasn’t his team entirely.

Jeff Green- 2003 (Got let go by RCR after bagging Harvick, then struggled at DEI) Kasey Kahne- 2016 (How you can not lead a SINGLE lap driving for Hendrick Motorsports is a joke) Brad Keslowski- 2013 (Terrible backup to a championship) Kurt Busch- 2012 (Just a downright shocking season) Kyle Petty- 2002 (Once again just a downright shocking season) David Gilliland- 2007 (Very over hyped especially after getting the Pole for the Daytona 500, turned in to a very bad season) Tony Stewart- 2006 (Terrible backup to a championship) Johnny Benson- 2003 (After a pretty promising 2002, he was poor in 2003 and never got a full time cup ride again) Brian Vickers- 2004 (Very hyped after winning 2003 Busch championship, struggled dearly)

Benson's '03 wasn't very good, but he was still the top performer for Pontiac, and did better than any of his teammates, or his replacement. Just a victim of Pontiac's overall awfulness that year. Terry Labonte also had a 0 lead lap year for Hendrick. In 2001 of all years, when any car could randomly have a good run.

not sure if you could do a video on him because he didn't have too much coverage that year but Terry Labonte from 2001 would be my suggestion. teammate car to that year's champion yet and average finish of 24.1, average start of 30.8 and not a single lap led. boy, Hendrick didn't put a whole lot of stock into that car in 2001 lol or maybe if you wanted to do a "Good Seasons" video, Terry's 2003 season would be one

i think harvicks career really took off around 2010 after all the big dogs retired (martin, jarrett, labonte, rusty) so overall i would rank him below all these legends, but dont get me wrong he was pretty good, a top 50 driver in all nascar history, so thats still pretty impressive

All those guys you listed were in way better equipment though. Jarrett drove for JGR and then RYR which was a very competitive team when he was there, Labonte drove for JGR and then fell off hard after 2003, and Wallace drove for Penske. RCR was mid-pack around the time Dale died and still is.

Just to simplify for the fans who don't know. Since 2004, any driver that misses the playoffs, knows they didn't had a great season. For example ⬇️ Jeff Gordon won four races in 2005, including the Daytona 500. His year was trash BECAUSE he scored 9 DNF's which were more than his wins & top5s that season. Tony Stewart missed the playoffs in 2006 because he didn't accumulated enough points to be in it. He still won five races, three in the playoffs. Would've finished 2nd in points had he been apart of it. Lacking consistency cost him. Kyle Busch won four races in 2009, again, missed the playoffs because his season was more of a win or bust situation. Wrecks & engine failures denied his ticket towards the playoffs. Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500 in 2010 & scored two more wins including the Brickyard 400. But nonetheless, struggled for the most part & had too many bad finishes as an end result. Jimmie Johnson won 3 races in 2017, had 1 top5 the rest of the season after his Dover win. Johnson has gone 9 races currently without a top10 finish. Johnson earned 4 top5s & 11 top10s which tells me his year was pathetic despite 3 Wins. So anybody that tells me that even if you win 3-5 races a season, guess what I DON'T CARE!!! You can win your races all you want, but you have to fill the rest of that gap with Top5s, Top10s, laps led, average finish, stage points, playoff points, etc. That's what matters.

Between 2001 and 2006 Fox and NBC swapped the Daytona races. For example, Fox got the 500 on the odd numbered years, and NBC the even years. The other network did the 400 that year. NBC the odd years, Fox the even years.
