Ticonderoga Dixon I know this is probably sarcasm but just in case: the U in the name comes from the yoke, and the actual bearing/x-shaped piece is called the spider
I've had that vibration for almost 2 years and still couldn't figure it out gonna check the u joints as ive replaced front end parts as i thought it was a tire problem but driving shaft is the other thing to check
Well, it really depends on which parts you are talking about. I use to use Autozone almost exclusively because they had a lifetime warranty... only problem was, I was changing the same part over and over every couple of months. Now I mostly use Oreilley's for standard parts and they have lifetime warranties on most items and the parts are better quality. For real important stuff I use NAPA.
well, there should be a bit of slop in your ring a pinion, this is called backlash. It shouldn't bee too much, but just right. to check it out further remove the driveshaft so you can see if it is in fact coming from the ring an pinion.
Ya that sucks when that happens. you would think that they would make the little tabs on the side of the yolk much bigger and stronger... I'm not sure why they don't??
Not sure what it means for a tire to fold under you but... 1st make sure you are not in 4wd. 2nd Did the previous owner have a locker in the front axle?
Thank you for this video and the thorough explanation of the symptoms. I was about to replace the ball joints and control arms but I have the clunk when I initially press the gas and ALOT of vibration at speed. You saved me a ton!
Awesome video and great tips. It seems the next video is going to be "How to replace front pinion bearing" or you can wait a while and then make "How to rebuild front axle". lol
Are your lug nuts on tight? Also, it could be that if your 4wd selector is jammed up it could be in 4wd and that wouldnt be good. sometimes the linkage can get messed up under the vehicle and your selector wont show the right thing.
not necessarily, I would think the u-joints would be binding in either direction as they should be angled the same whether turned left or right. The clunk I would assume would be from the track bar or a loose steering box, or possibly a REally bad tie rod end.
well it should have a pit of rotational play... that is the slop between your ring and pinion gears. But not vertical or horizontal play as I described in the video.
sounds more like a brake issue but hard to tell from here. check that your dust shield isnt bent. could be many things but look for metal to metal contact somewhere.
I like watching videos like this for educational purposes. You're the only channel I've found that actually has quality content for a 4x4 vehicle... But I recently bought a f150 with a 10 inch lift from a friend. It was to good of a deal to pass up, and after driving a 2wd s10 for 5 years, I was ready for a change. I am fully aware of the potential money pit, but it would be cool to see a little more videos related to trucks a little more. If you can't, then videos like this are just as good.
watch my video on how to change a u-joint with a hammer... that is a driveshaft but the axleshaft is almost exactly the same but the clips are on the inside.
I wouldnt assume the driveshaft u-joint. Usually you will get a bad vibration from that but thats about it. I would think maybe the ring and pinion or possibly the brakes have come apart.
When the u-joints are working correctly the drive shaft spins in perfect balance. When the u-joint has failed, the rotating drive shaft will slip to one side due to the centrifugal force of the rotating mass, causing an imbalance, resulting in the vibration that you would be feeling. The bad u-joint will not cause the drive shaft to bounce back and forth while spinning at driving speed.
ya its either the NSS neutral safety switch... or the shift lever cable is a tad stretched and needs adjustment. You can adjust it on the driver side of the transmission with a little clip, then slide it one way or the other and try again.
True, I almost forgot what a stock driveshaft looks like. And I wasn't counting the double cardans but I guess I could have... I'll make a note on the video.
that sucks man! I'm not sure... I guess they just wanted you to replace them every so often anyway. The greasable ones only work better if you keep em greased though so make sure to do it regularly.
what is a topaz?? ahh, I just looked it up... it could be but that car is going to be a whole different ballgame than a solid axle u-joint replacement.
I don't have a jeep (I have a 94 dodge ram 1500 4x4) And when I drive down the road (10-40mph) it makes a really annoying squeak, It's kind of like the click, click, click noise you were talking about, but its a high pitch noise. It happens when I turn left, when I turn right it stops, can you help diagnose it?
Luv the Barbie Helmet!! So I looked under my car and it seems like 1 wheel is slanted,,,,bottom to the outside,,,,,opposite of what it would look like after sliding into a curb!!? :(
Very helpful, I was trying to pin point the problem on my Tacoma, getting a lot of squeaking from the rear when in reverse as well as when I've been driving for a while. Vibrations started yesterday when I would accelerate. Am I on the right track?
I love your pink helmet!!!! I didn't know what that sound was on our Chevy trailblazer but you have helped me to better understand the problem with my vehicle and how to fix it!!!! Thank you so much, you explain things about vehicles very well!!!!
I actually watched your last video like 2 weeks weeks ago, I had a click while turning right, I had MAYBE a hair of play in my driverside U-joint, replaced it and now no more click! Great Vid man. Btw I just used a BFH and a large socket on the ground to pop that sucker out, then used a vise to press them in. Worked fine, only took about 1-2 hours
i recently bought my first jeep, its a WJ with the 4.0 inline 6 ,and i hav to say your videos are great.im really falling in love with jeeps in general and i use to be a tuner fan.i had a modified Nissan altima with the ka24de and the motor blew.but im happy cuz now i found a new vehicle with tons of potential and loads of info available from guys like you.thanks bleepin jeep 😊👍🏻
Tim Tanton at one end there is a different type of joint, not a standard Uni, this one is a much heavier variety, and depending on the vehicle, can even be a CV joint
Your videos are all awesome. As a new jeeper I really like how you show every step of the process with detailed explanations of what and why you are doing what you are doing. The videos are fun to watch too because of your off kilter humor. I can't say thanks enough for all of the info.
LOVED your UJoint video! I have a 2002 4WD Avalanche with 183,000 miles on it, and have a clunking noise when slowly shifting from 1st to 2nd (in auto mode, not 4WD). It will also clunk when downshifting at the same gears. Sounds like it is coming from the rear. U joint or Slip Yoke? Not my own mechanic, but want to sound educated LOL when I take it to my mechanic. Should I go to the tranny shop instead? Thanks for your input!
I have a 2014 Chevy impala . And from time to time when I'm in slower acceleration myb 5 - 15 mph I will hear a clunk almost crunch noise for a few seconds and then it goes away in like 2 sec . I'm not sure what it could be? It don't click when turning. Sometimes that crunch noise happens when turning either way, and sometimes going forward . Never heard it in reverse . Does not cause engine light to come on or vibrations while driving in accelerated speed . Do you have any idea what could be causing this noise ? Thank you for any suggestions.
Hi Matt! very helpfull... I have a problem with my front Differential, you can hear/watch it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xUGv3twPrJI.html . Please I need help with this... any small/big suggestion, help or advice greatly appreciated...
You rock...oh you ok?! You just crashed dude!! An Awesome help, my good gentleman. I think mine went balls out. I'm going to check now. I can even put them on if the men will just let me. Lol...hey how much oil should I have put in the carb??? I think I put too much...whoooaaaa!!! That's slickery huh.. ..he he he 😋🙏😌
Awesome Barbie helmet. I can't even get the grease gun to fit into the u-joints on my GMC Yukon. I just had them replaced both brand new and the guy didn't grease them. It was a terrible experience I helped him pounding for 2 or 3 hours. And inner clips that were rusted shut.
Is it dangerous to the car to drive it under the speed that the vibrations occur? My mechanic can't fix it until next week and I don't want to make my car worse. I'm convinced it's the drive shaft U- Joint after watching your video. I'm planning on not moving the car anywhere until I drive it to the mechanic under the speed where the vibration starts (around 35 mph) about ten miles from my place. Also, what part are you referencing to as the "yoke"? Could the failing front drive shaft U Joint cause a transmission fluid leak?
I got stuck in deep sand in my fwd 4 cylinder van. It made some nasty popping noise getting out. I drove 300 miles without hearing a single noise. The next morning pulling out a heard a single pop. It does not happen when i'm driving , just when pulling out and driving out for the first time since parked. Might this be the u-joint? Van only has 25k miles, would this be covered by manufactures drivetrain? What's the market price to replace these things? A tire shop told me it's my transmission mount, but I don't think so.
i have a 2004 ford e450 cube truck....ive had the u joints replaced...but it still has these symptoms of a seized u joints...on top of that my load keeps swaying more to left side. .leans tooo much on one side when in a sharp angle...i checked the suspesion plates..no cracks or any sign of damge on them...same goes for struts...any tips...i an taking to mech on friday for a test run...
Hi I have an unlimited x jk 2008 with stock Dana 30 diff and drive shaft. Can you say if the 4 u joints are the same size? I need the 2 for the drive shaft what do look for on line t purchase? Thanks
Mine doesnt vibrate and isnt loose but there's grease sprayed everywhere like one of the bearings exploded and it sounds like a bad bearing. It sounds terrible when I accelerate from a stop. Kind of weird symptoms. I changed a bunch of pulleys out on the engine thinking it was those. It did need it anyway but the sound didnt go away. I'll replace this next as soon as it stops snowing!
Hey Very good content about u-joints and your wacky silly ending was just enough to make me chuckle out loud ! Andrew in Santa Fe with a front end shimmy !
I ended up almost being able to pull the u joint apart by hand mine was so damaged. Great video though will help diagnostics in the future thanks. Only note would be to flip the camera next time, its disorienting watching upside down
My passenger Axal shaft wiggles and my buddies are saying it's the u joint and not the Axal shaft! It also clicks while driving.. what needs to be replaced
Question so if I’m hearing a scrape noise while driving and cracking noise while reversing do I have to buy a new drive shaft ? My drive shaft is hiting something side to side. Is it because I need new U joints or a new drive shaft ? I notice a crack because of the drive shaft on my Transfer case….
thanks bleeping jeep, my driveshaft fell off out of the front when i hit a hard bump, i noticed the front yoke nut inside was completely off hence why it couldof fell off so easily, but now i have a vibration after putting it back together, wasnt sure if it was a bent driveshaft or what, now at least i can check my u joints first because no visual bend in my driveshaft, and its a 87 and dont want to fork out a ton of money!
I don't know if you noticed this but your pinion bearings are bad on your differentials way too much slop and it's probably from a bad u-joint or unbalanced shaft plus mileage
You're missing 3 u joints in your video. There's one in each axle shaft, 3 in the front driveshaft as well as a centering ball socket that needs the be serviced or replaced with the ujoints, and 2 in the rear driveshaft.
my jeep liberty feel like its on rumble strips when acceleraring, if i let off the gas.. the rumble strip vibration immediately goes away?!? can this me the u joints?
Could a bad u -joint cause the t case rear out put seal to leak, I feel an intermittent vibration on my zj right before 60 mph that gets stronger as the rpm's go up, my t case out put seal was just replaced less then 3k miles ago and it's leaking again
I've got a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. When I stop and start again I'm hearing a sound like I had something metal in the back shifting and hitting inside of tailgate. I'm starting to believe it's a U joint
