Bad VVT Solenoid Symptoms: 7 Common Failure Signs
Discover the warning signs of faulty variable valve timing solenoids. This video examines the common bad variable camshaft timing solenoid failure symptoms - including check engine codes P0013, P0010, rattling timing chains, rough engine idle, oil leaks, hesitation on acceleration and loss of power. Learn how diagnose issues with your car's VVT Solenoid before major engine damage results.
A variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid is an electro-mechanical component that controls and adjusts the opening and closing timing of engine valves, primarily the intake and exhaust valves. The main failure signs of a faulty VVT solenoid in one paragraph are:
The VVT solenoid can fail over time leading to symptoms such as rough engine idle, loss of power, reduced fuel economy, engine misfires, check engine light illumination with trouble codes for cam/crank correlation or timing issues, engine oil leaks from a damaged solenoid seal, loud rattling noise from the valvetrain, and difficulty starting the engine due to improper valve timing. If these symptoms are observed, it typically indicates wear, clogging, or electrical failure in the VVT solenoid requiring replacement to restore proper valve timing control and engine performance.

Hi. My car sometimes rattles 1-2 seconds after startup. Its not got timing chain. Can it be vvt solenoids? Will it damage something if not replaced? No fault codes are present, and no other symptoms.
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 8 месяцев назад
Hi. Yes it could be related to the solenoids. If the VVT solenoids are failing or are clogged, it's possible that you won't see immediate fault codes or other symptoms but experience some rattles. But since its only 1-2 seconds after startup, I wouldn't be worried just yet.

While this is a common problem in cars with high mileage it's better to scan the ECU for codes rather than looking for symptoms to identify a problem. Rough idling, misfires, poor starts and other symptoms could be caused by other conditions. Many DIYs jump to conclusions and end up ' fixing' things that had nothing to do with the problem. Most VVT failures usually result from dirty screens which in turn are the result of irregular oil change intervals. If a VVT code is present, remove the valves ( intake and exhaust) and clean the screens with a solvent such as brake cleaner. If that doesn't solve the problem then replace the vvts. Symptoms are only a ball park approach to a problem that can tell you which components to check. For an accurate diagnosis identify the part that is failing. This will save time, money and frustration.

@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 7 месяцев назад
Hi, Yes, a common issue with the VVT-i system not working in a Toyota Vitz 1.3 VVT-i could indeed be the solenoid. The VVT-i solenoid controls oil flow to adjust the timing of the camshaft for optimal engine performance. If it's faulty or clogged, it can prevent the VVT-i system from functioning properly. It's advisable to check the solenoid for any signs of oil blockage or electrical issues.

I’m currently trying to fix multiple misfires on my ‘16 IS300 with 35k miles. Replaced coils and spark plugs and the result was misfires on 5 cylinders! Took it to a shop and they suspect it’s due to the non oem parts I used. I plan on getting oem but that still doesn’t account for the initial misfires. I’m wondering if the vvti solenoid could be the cause. There have been no codes mentioning it. Only cylinder misfire codes. Thought? Thanks for any help!
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 3 месяца назад
Hi John, Yes, these solenoids can indeed cause misfires, and the tricky part is that they can lead to a lot of random misfires. I once owned a V8 Audi S5, and it started misfiring on one bank despite my plugs, coils, and injectors being fairly new. I even carbon cleaned my engine. That's when I decided to change the solenoids on both banks. As a mechanic, I know that if one component starts to fail, others may soon follow. Regarding your '16 IS300 with 35k miles, it's concerning that replacing coils and spark plugs led to misfires on 5 cylinders. The shop suspects it might be due to non-OEM parts, but even if you switch to OEM parts, it doesn't explain the initial misfires. It's possible that the VVTi solenoid could be a culprit, despite no codes mentioning it, as you've only seen cylinder misfire codes. It might be worth investigating the solenoid further. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions or need further assistance.

@@HonestMechanicChannel thanks for the quick response! The only other suspicion he had was carbon build up. Which turned out to be quite minimal. So he basically circled back to plugs and coils. I had seen some mention of the solenoids but couldn’t remember what they were called when I tried to bring it up. Seems possible. The reason im unsure is because the codes referenced seem to be different than the misfire codes im getting. Thanks again!

Half way Check engine light came one. Couldn’t use the awd system after that. Drove it slowly home and out the scanner. I haven’t got the solenoid yet my question is should go a head and just replace it or should I be concerned about the timing chain itself?

@@bradleyrivenbark946 just erased the code and changed the oil. It went away. However I’m hearing the rattle noise more noticeable when idle. I don’t think it has anything to do with the timing chain in most cases. I bought the VVTI SOLENOID AT Napa $134. Haven’t changed it yet but that was next step before the code went away and all systems came back. Ever since I haven’t had any issues. I still intent buying the other 3 remaining VVTI solenoids. Keep in mind bank 1 is at the back near the windshield. Bank 2 is at the front. There’s 2 exhaust VVTIs solenoids and two intake solenoids. One of each at both banks. Apparently they get stuck when oil is dirty or low. They are very fragile and prone to failure if almost anything that’s not oil gets in between the little valves inside said solenoids. Best prevention change your oil every 3k that’s been key imo. Don’t go for the intervals even tho this V6 is not turbo it does run Hot. 🥵 Pro tip I leaned with these issue; erase the code at least once to see if it comes back. Before buying parts. And check your oil level make sure is clean and closer to the F as possible.

I have a 2019 Infiniti Q50 3.0t (94K miles). My car was driving very sluggish when I was trying to accelerate. Does this has anything to do with my catalytic converter? @HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 5 месяцев назад
Hi, The sluggish acceleration and the diagnostic trouble codes P0012 and P0022 are related to the variable valve timing (VVT) system, not the catalytic converter. These codes indicate that the camshaft timing is retarded (delayed) on both banks of the engine. This issue can cause reduced engine performance and sluggish acceleration. I would first check the cam position sensors then move to vvt solenoids

@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 8 месяцев назад
Hi, suggests a possible issue with the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system. The VVT system is designed to improve engine performance and efficiency by altering the timing of the valve opening and closing. Here are a few possibilities (Most common to least) 1. VVT Solenoid or Actuator Problem: The VVT solenoid controls the flow of oil to the VVT chain and gears. If it's malfunctioning or clogged, it can affect the timing, leading to rough idling. 2. Oil Quality and Level: Low or dirty oil can negatively impact the VVT system. Since VVT relies on hydraulic pressure (which comes from the engine oil), insufficient or contaminated oil could hinder its operation. 3. Timing Chain or Belt Issue: If your Rogue uses a timing chain (which is more likely) and it's stretched or not functioning correctly, it could affect the VVT system.
@johnf.6942
@johnf.6942 8 месяцев назад
@@HonestMechanicChannel Thank you ! I’m thinking the chain stretched since I change oil every 3,000 miles, I would think the solenoids would be ok with that interval, and chain for that matter. I don’t have the facility to do it myself, now I have to find a reputable mechanic who will be honest about what it really needs.

If you go to a mechanic with this they will say you need new spark plugs because it will give the same symptoms. After they take your money for the tune up you didn’t need and the problem is still there, they will then charge you for diagnosis and finally they will replace the solenoid once they found the problem. @HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 5 месяцев назад
Given the symptoms you're describing with your 2008 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L I4 - misfires and variable low idle along with vibration that improves when giving it gas - it is indeed plausible that the issue could be related to the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor, especially since VVT plays a crucial role in engine timing and performance. The VVT system adjusts the timing of the camshafts to optimize engine performance and efficiency. If the VVT sensor (often referred to as the VVT solenoid) is malfunctioning, it could cause the timing to be off, leading to misfires and rough idling. Before you consider pulling the head, which can be quite labor-intensive and expensive.

such as a timing chain tensioner that lacks oil pressure, causing inaccurate timing and can cause the engine to vibrate. Because when the engine rpm is increased, the vibration disappears. So it could be the tensioner that has a problem, or the oil pressure that has a problem.

Hi, way to go for choosing a Lexus!. It sounds like your Lexus IS250 might indeed be experiencing a problem related to the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system, particularly the VVT solenoid. The rattle you're hearing upon startup, which dissipates after a couple of seconds, could be due to the VVT solenoid failing to properly control the flow of oil to the VVT chain on initial startup. This is relatively common in vehicles as they age and accumulate mileage.

@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 3 месяца назад
Hi there, Given your 2007 VW Rabbit's symptoms of sputtering and losing power during acceleration, even after replacing the coils, plugs, and a fuel injector, it’s possible that: 1. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A faulty MAF sensor can cause these issues. Try cleaning or replacing it. 2. Throttle Body: A dirty or malfunctioning throttle body can affect acceleration. 3. Fuel Pump/Filter: Check the fuel pump and filter for proper fuel delivery. 4.Vacuum Leaks: Inspect for any vacuum leaks, which can cause similar symptoms. 5. PCV Valve: A malfunctioning PCV valve can lead to power loss and sputtering. Addressing these components should help diagnose and fix the problem.

@HonestMechanicChannel 3 месяца назад
Hi, Yes, a bad VVT (Variable Valve Timing) solenoid can cause air suction from the oil dipstick tube. This happens because a malfunctioning VVT solenoid can lead to improper engine timing and increased crankcase pressure. Hi, Your issue, where the car operates normally for 30 minutes before experiencing RPM limitations and instability, could potentially be related to the VVT solenoid, but it might also involve other factors such as fuel delivery problems, a clogged catalytic converter, or an issue with the engine's electronic control system, including sensors like the MAF or O2 sensors. While a timing chain skipping teeth is possible, it's less likely to cause intermittent problems and would typically result in more constant and severe running issues or the engine not running at all. Before focusing on the VVT solenoid or timing chain, consider having the vehicle's computer scanned for trouble codes and checking for any issues with fuel pressure or exhaust flow restrictions.

I have a Chrysler 200 I wanna know if this can be a reason my car won’t turn can it this instead of me thinking an engine locked up

Hi Aunbriell, A faulty VVT (Variable Valve Timing) solenoid typically doesn't prevent an engine from turning over; instead, it can cause issues like poor engine performance, increased fuel consumption, rough idling, or a check engine light. The VVT solenoid is responsible for controlling the flow and timing of oil to the VVT system to adjust the engine's valve timing. If it fails, you'll likely notice performance problems, but the engine will still turn over if the battery and starter are in good condition. If your Chrysler 200 is not turning over at all (i.e., the engine does not crank when you try to start it), the issue is likely related to the battery, starter motor, ignition switch, or a seized engine. A seized engine can indeed prevent the car from turning over, but this would typically be accompanied by a history of serious engine problems, such as overheating or lack of oil. To diagnose the issue, you should: 1. Check the battery voltage and ensure it's fully charged. 2. Listen for a click when you try to start the engine; a single click can indicate a problem with the starter. 3. Check for any visible signs of oil leakage or damage under the engine which could suggest serious internal issues. 4. If possible, try manually turning the engine with a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt (only if you're experienced with mechanical work). If the engine cannot be manually turned, it might be seized. If you're unsure or not experienced with car repairs, it's a good idea to have a professional mechanic take a look to accurately diagnose and resolve the issue.

My vvt solenoid had metal shavings on it🤦🏽‍♂️ for a 2014 Chevy Malibu

Hi Sean, Finding metal shavings on your VVT solenoid for a 2014 Chevy Malibu could indicate wear in the engine's internal components, possibly due to inadequate lubrication or failing parts. It’s important to thoroughly clean the solenoid, check for further damage, and replace the engine oil and filter promptly. Consider having a mechanic inspect the engine to diagnose and address the root cause of the metal shavings. Also I recommend replacing the solenoid

Hello, I have a 07 Nissan Altima and upon start up, the car shakes, on warm up under acceleration it makes a ticking noise 1.5k rpm to rev limit could it be a vvt solenoid or a piston, rings, or something else?
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 5 месяцев назад
The shaking on startup and ticking noise during acceleration could be caused by several issues, such as: 1. Faulty VVT solenoid 2. Low oil level or poor oil quality 3. Worn valve lifters or camshaft lobes 4. Exhaust manifold leak 5. Spark plug or ignition coil issues While worn piston rings are a possibility, they are less likely to cause the specific symptoms you described. It's best to have a mechanic diagnose the problem to determine the exact cause and appropriate repair.

My car runs great cause everything great stays on the number one on tachometer oil is great. A problem little tap and up by the camp shop phaser results back.

It sounds like you're saying your car generally runs well because all the indicators (like oil pressure) are in the optimal range on your dashboard. However, you're experiencing a slight issue, possibly a tapping noise, which was diagnosed at a repair shop as related to the camshaft phaser. This component helps improve the engine's efficiency by adjusting the timing of the camshaft. If it's faulty, it might need repair or replacement to resolve the noise and ensure your engine runs smoothly.

Hi there, I suggest you first clean them properly before replacing them to avoid spending before being sure if the issue is the vvt solenoid itself or something at play.

Hi, when starting my Volkswagen Passat 2017, an error message sometimes appears. After taking it to the workshop for diagnostics, they mentioned that according to the computer, one of the electronic engine VVT components is faulty and needs replacement. Is this accurate? Appreciate for your input

Yo my man, quick question ❓ will these being bad make a car backfire and rPmZ not to work all of a sudden after changing starter, oil, manifold intake just minutes ago or “NO “
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 6 месяцев назад
Hey man, managed to get it sorted? Yes, faulty VVT solenoids can potentially cause backfiring and RPM issues, as they affect engine timing. However, if these problems started right after changing the starter, oil, and intake manifold, it's also worth double-checking those areas for any installation errors or disconnected sensors.

What if I get a P0011?
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 5 месяцев назад
P0011 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates a timing issue related to the "A" camshaft on bank 1 of the engine. The code description is "Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Advanced (Bank 1)". This means that the intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than the ECU expects it to be. Possible causes for this code include: 1. Low engine oil level or dirty oil 2. Stretched or jumped timing chain 3. Faulty camshaft phaser or actuator 4. Camshaft position sensor issue 5. Sludge or debris in the oil passages 6. Wiring issues or damaged connectors related to the camshaft position sensor or actuator In rare cases, a faulty ECU
