There's definitely a high pucker-factor in flying carrier approaches in bad weather. I can't imagine trying to do it with a non VSTOL and having to crash into the deck at high speed. Beautifully done.

It’s a lot easier in the F35 where you set STOVL and it flies it for you. I’ll try it in the AV8B next! 😅

@@denmister100 to be fair: I've seen some pretty horrible approaches / landings within DCS that people shouldn't be able to get away with - and they've been called "great landings"! so yea.. while i 100% prefer DCS for such activities and it's the best we got, it's still far from being perfect.

Finding your content this holiday season has been fantastic. I didn't realise just how good MSFS was for low fast flying. Particularly enjoying the UK navigation sorties like the mach loop, the lakes and Scotland. Having an absolute blast especially as I was in centre parcs earlier this year and saw the hawks flying over head and now I've been able to recreate the route. Please keep the content going and perhaps expanding to other major UK bases like Brize, Lakenheath, Conningsby etc? ATC comm protocol would be fun also! Many thanks!

The chart you have for reference shows a left turn onto a right arc, yet you flew a right turn into a left arc. Are there two types of procedures for this approach? I certainly stand by your comment “known power and attitude gives a predictable performance “ - or words to that effect! Flew it like it was on rails, very informative particularly the control input responses once in the hover. I was under the impression it flew like a Harrier, leave it to the (good ol’) US of A to come up with something different… thanks!
@cgaviator
@cgaviator Год назад
The chart I use for reference, there’s nothing to say that a particular ship can’t nominate a 210 rather than 150 relative bearing for the Marshall. I did it because of the ground which I ended up flying over anyway! 😅 And thanks, much appreciated 👍🏻
@Jetpusher
@Jetpusher Год назад
In CASE III conditions we would recover the F35’s with a straight in approach, they would still slow to a hover over spot 7 however they would follow the tram line of the ship (yellow line)
@cgaviator
@cgaviator Год назад
Over-the-stern? The NATOPS read like it was optional. Do you work with them? Would be cool to see up close!
@Jetpusher
@Jetpusher Год назад
@@cgaviator It’s based on conditions of weather, night landings are always Case III so it’s always going to be over the stern, heavy weather recovery’s will also be Case III over the stern depending on PriFly’s Decision. I’m a yellow shirt on these big decks, I pull these birds daily and watch this happen. Also, you’re not wrong for landing on spot 9 because you’re just a single F35 doing CQ’s on the deck, but normally the first F35 will always scoot up to spot 7 before paddles gives him the clear to cross. Then that gives us the opportunity to recover another jet on 9 and hold him while 7 is spinning into the slash. On these mods that these guys have made of the ships deck with all the aircraft on it there are some inaccuracies to it and it bothers me, for instance, GSE (tractors) parked Between F35’s on a green deck, that thing has to have a driver or be tied down and also the modders like to fill the slash with all kinds of jets to make it feel alive, but I can’t taxi into the slash when they do that so it gets bothersome because no aircraft is just going to sit on the LA unless it’s a spotted helo that’s spinning. The foul line (alternating red and white that should not be crossed by personnel without specific instruction) is shifted so close to the island that there’s no room for the Ground support equipment to park there, meaning that they’ve just scattered them across the deck to make it feel “alive” Trust me I was FLY2PO and I would NEVER have no shit like that going on during flight quarters 😂😂😂

Chris, awesome video as always but I’ve got a burning question. As we see yourself pull along side the carrier as they do in real life, and perform this slide across action. If the runway is free from aircraft and other traffic, then why can’t the pilots fly straight in like a normal runway?
@cgaviator
@cgaviator Год назад
They can! From how it read, at night they conduct over-the-stern approaches. But the deck is much smaller than a CVN type ship (regular carrier) so it would be tight. Or at least that’s my understanding of it.
@SPQRTempus
@SPQRTempus Год назад

While it's usually impossible for me to give props to anything military/naval based aviation related in MSFS because there is a far superior option out there for that kind of stuff, i do want to complement your piloting and (almost 100%) dedication to NATOPS SOPs. While i don't know shit about F-35 SOPs i was a bit confused about when the ball call came, but besides that i am certain that if you had the DCS Supercarrier with a capable module (Hornet is my preference) you would rock CASE 3 down to every detail rather than going for minimums straight because having things like the ball and long range laser lineup system will be able to assist you. Plus usually you'd fly "needles" anyways.

@cgaviator

True, if I verbalised it as a radial from then I misspoke. However, I can still be on the inbound radial value rather than use tail end of the needle. And mostly it’s a fudge based on me using the GPS waypoint rather than tacan. I think I corrected my lead radial comment.

Excellent video as usual Chris, I particularly appreciate you including the radio calls - helps with confidence for DCS multiplayer! I have a question: as you were on approach, you were clearly doing a scan of your instruments and seeing what needed correcting. Can you talk about this, what you do, what you look at, what the flow is, etc., please? (Or, if you can remember, which video you explained it in?)

I’ll likely do another video about flying the needles (ILS). One of my first videos ever was flying the Hawk T1 on the ILS. And while it’s an analogue jet, I pause the video and talk about what I’m looking at. That video will give the fundamentals of a workcycle and why to check. Also the How to Land Any Jet video that I linked To during the video will talk about some other aspects of staying on parameters.

Yes, it’s designed so the inputs are similar to forward flight. None of this funny business with the controls. It’s to keep it common between phases of flight.
