Hey folks, today we’re gonna take a look at how hot the bite can get just before bad weather comes through. I’ll be fishing the grass flats for redfish on Florida’s gulf coast before a tropical storm hits, and I catch a trio of upper slot reds in short order.
You know, when lots of folks think about “ideal fishing days”, sunny days and fair conditions are the first things that come to mind. But I’m here to tell you, some of the hottest bites that I’ve ever seen have been just before bad weather moved into the area. It’s not unusual at all for gamefish to go into feeding mode just before a front or low pressure system arrives, so don’t overlook these little windows of opportunity.
This video is a perfect example of a very productive day just before tropical storm conditions set in.
Here’s the scenario…
------There was a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico and outer rain bands from the storm were approaching.
-------Because it was a slow moving system, overcast conditions for a few consecutive days cooled water temps a bit.
--------AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - no lightning. Florida is the lightning capital of the world and I want to do everything I can to not become a statistic. But no matter where you are in the world, please, make sure there’s no lightning in the area before venturing out in stormy weather.
The moral of this story is...if you go fishing right before a low pressure system moves through, good things can happen.
