Something that was missed, part of the reason that the Marines Errant were unwilling to be so aggressive was due to them being Honour Brothers with the Lamenters due to serving together multiple times. As such when the Lamenters and Marines Errant faced each other they were very chill mostly just moving ships around each other and waving flags until one side left. This made both chapters respective allies angry.

It was at that Moment the marine's errants realized they had made a Bad choice on which side to follow. To their merit However, they, as soon as they realized immediately turned around, asked for forgiveness and said that they would go on a penitent to grace. Tbf, they couldn't spare any troops. Huron was doing okay and their was no reason to justify taking troops away from active engagements just to satisfy the preferences the astral claws defence strategy. Once Huron went renegade they can justify the troops because he's become an active threat that is disrupting the area and could potentially put the entire sector in jeopardy. It's not a matter of available reinforcements, it's about priorities.

Important thing to note about the Marines Errant: owing to actions in an earlier conflict, the Corinthian Crusade, the Marines Errant and the Lamenters were actually best buddies who had unbelieveable respect for one another and because of that the Lamenters actually refused to outright battle with the Marines Errant when they were both "fighting" each other in the Pale Stars, instead they employed positioning and manouvres to force the other party to leave the battlefield or risk costly defeats in any actual battle. The two basically had a gentlemen's agreement with each other just going through the motions without actually fighting because they sure as hell weren't feeling like fighting with their best buddies. This is also why the Marines Errant were eventually reassigned and the Minotaurs decided to go upend the Pale Stars (because clearly that sector of space was lacking some proper fighting and they were gonna make-up for it!). And regarding the sacking of the Lamenters by the Minotaurs, it should be said that despite being hopelessly outmatched, their defeat a certainty AND all the usual patented Lamenter bad luck going into overdrive during their last stand, they gave the Minotaurs such a good fight they earned some ***serious*** street cred with the Minotaurs (which is also sorta a bad thing because it made them want to fight them even more, but I digress). Minotaurs went into the Pale Stars because they saw a bunch of pansies and wanted to give them a proper fight. They ended up getting everything they wanted and more!

The fun bit that Bricky missed is that Moloc and the Carcharodons chapter master(Tyberos the red wake) are huge. Like big enough that Tyberos might be bigger than most Primarchs, using a quick google, he has a full foot on Bobby Girlyman. Tyberos wears Dreadnaught pieces because there isn't any standard power armor that fits him. Moloc was described as having the strongest stink of violence ever encountered by a Custodian. Imagine being a 7ish foot tall Lamenter and one of these titans enters the fray. "I suddenly know what traitor guardsmen feel like when my brothers and I fight them. I do not like it."

According to their lore *nobody* likes the Minotaurs apart from the High Lords, it seems like every other Marine chapter hates their guts for one reason or another...except maybe the Black Templars...most others hate them for being the High Lords Lackey Chapter essentially. Nobody likes serving alongside them, Imperial Guard even more so than any of the Marines. It's why the High Lords/Inquisition tend to use them as targetted removal rather than have them out on campaigns, usually deploying them to crush rebellions in the most brutal way possible.

@consolescrub4031
@consolescrub4031 10 месяцев назад
The Lexicanum entry notes it was a 17 hour fight and while the Lamenters lost, the entire strength of the Minotaurs was placed on guard duty until the end of the war implying they got hit back pretty hard. That said, the entry also says the Minotaurs were regarded as the close combat experts of the war until the Carcharodons arrived so there's probably a little bias in the entry. (Space Sharks are good in melee but it's Spartan Iron Warriors vs Pacific Islander Night Lords so it's probably either in the Minotaurs favour or too close to tell.)

Although they carry out regular Space Marine duties, they also do special missions for the High Lords of Terra, mainly enforcement issues with Chapters who are becoming divergent. They're well-trained and very well equipped. As Bricky said, they will come in, kick your ass and steal your stuff. In the Hexarchy Crisis, when Guilliman was consolidating his rule, the MInotaurs arrived to defend errant High Lords who unknown to them were actually plotting against Guilliman, who sent a Custodes Captain to parley and the Minotaurs Chapter Master nearly attacked him, which would not have gone well for the Chapter Master (against a Custodes Captain!), but does show how brave they are, if reckless. The Captain gave the Minotaur a message from Bobby G pointing out that although they take orders from the High Lords, their loyalty is to him and the Emperor. They realised their mistake and bent the knee.

@@alexvaraderey If memory serves, Moloch (the Chapter Master) caused a moment of concern in the Shield Captain because he wasn't displaying any weaknesses for the Shield Captain to exploit which was a first for the captain when encountering marines. I think there was also a part of the conflict where a squad of Sister of Silence and a Custodes were killed by a force of Minotaurs (5 of which died in the conflict). I also just had a quick search on the Lexicanum to see if there was anything mentioning the moment and found out they raised a lot of eyebrows by deploying out of the blue with 12 strike cruisers (reminder the Night Lords warband in Soul Hunter had 1 for about a chapter strength.) They were also one of the first chapters to get Primaris reinforcements and have weird dreadnoughts called Hekaton which are treated with indifference (which is weird because dreadnoughts are generally revered by everyone except Chaos including Custodes). Otherwise there's a bunch of hypno-indoctrination which goes into joining the chapter which lead people to suspect the marines have programmed personalities (it's the Alpha Legion style BS for reference).

I should mention that the Karthago Sector's tithes COULD have been paid and they didn't need to bother Huron, but they had been coasting by on the tithes they collected from the Badab Sector and didn't want to have to pay their taxes with their own money just because some new guy had moved into Badab and declared himself a petty warlord and a Secessionist. It's also entirely possible that they didn't even know who Huron was at the time. They just assumed they could march into the Badab Sector, claim that Imperial law was on their side because they had trade agreements with Badab, and that whoever the 'Tyrant of Badab' was they would roll over and submit to the Karthago-lead tithe fleet. As it turns out, while Huron wasn't paying taxes, Badab was TECHNICALLY not required to pay those tithes because it was an autonomous zone technically outside of direct Imperial control and was only paying tithes to Karthago and the wider Imperium out of good faith; the Imperium was pissed that Huron wasn't paying them anymore, but TECHNICALLY Huron and Badab were more or less tax exempt. Officially speaking, the Badab Wars weren't about Huron not paying taxes or leaving the Imperium, as he was TECHNICALLY in his rights to do so, but he DID engage in armed conflict with Imperial forces and even launched retaliatory raids into Karthago-held Imperial space, which is how the Imperium and the Inquisition justified their intervention; they couldn't get Huron for tax evasion, so they waited until they could charge him with heresy for not immediately standing down and offering the Imperium substantial compensation as an apology. And just to reassure you that the Inquisition are equal opportunity assholes, when Karthago inevitably could not or would not pay its tithes, all of the nobles of Karthago were rounded up, put on trial, found guilty of gross incompetence, potential heresy, and criticized for exacerbating the situation with Badab, and summarily executed for their failings. Meanwhile, all of the citizens of Karthago under those nobles were found guilty of allowing such gross incompetence on the part of their rulers to happen without lawfully overthrowing the corrupt ruling class to meet the Imperial tithe quotas expected of them. Their punishment was to be deported from Karthago and enter into indentured servitude(in other words state-sanctioned slavery) for several generations until such time as their descendants had adequately atoned for their sins in the eyes of Imperial law while Karthago was repopulated by loyal Imperial citizens who would be expected to ensure Karthago made up for lost time, ravaging the sector to meet Imperial demands. Says a lot when the guy who wound up becoming a Chaos Warlord was more reasonable than ANYONE on the Imperial side.

This war is basically - Huron thinking he can dictate the policy of the imperium, getting rejected, using loopholes in the law to go full nuclear and secede. Then getting embroiled in a conflict with the local government, going even more nuclear and raid the imperium - and refuse to stand down when the clusterfuck gained the attention of lords of terra. Throughout this whole ordeal dude just kept doubling down cause he thought he was right (he mostly was tbf) and refused to compromise. He became such a nuisance, the high lords and inquisition turned him into an example of what happens when an Astartes thinks himself above the imperium (as an institution).

@@Brutalyte616 not true, they spend 150 years in legal battle, getting involved only after fire hawks and marines errant got their asses kicked AND Kathargo got raided by Huron. They couldn't do anything to him before the above mentioned ass whooping, cause other marines chapters would immediately see that as an attack on Astartes autonomy - but after that? They have one chance to put this situation to bed. That's why they went so hard.
@Brutalyte616
@Brutalyte616 10 месяцев назад
@@TheUbikator Well that's not entirely true. Had the Imperium left Huron be or taken his side at any point, there would be precedent for more micro-empires within the Imperium, especially in autonomous zones like Badab, but that's it; there would be precedent for Space Marines essentially declaring martial law across a sector, but only with the tacit approval or outright sanction of the Imperium. Had they allowed it, it would have shown leniency to Huron and sympathy for his situation, and the Imperium could have potentially retained the loyalty of Huron and Badab, and perhaps set a precedent for a 40k equivalent to Warhammer Fantasy's Border Princes, establishing a system whereby Space Marines could establish themselves in the galactic borderlands of the Imperium and rule over independent or vassal states of the Imperium; something incredibly progressive for the Imperium. I daresay if Guilliman had come back sooner, even if he wouldn't have signed off supporting Huron's plans for the Maelstrom due to the costs, he would have tolerated the autonomy of Badab and perhaps even endorsed it, because Guilliman himself wanted Space Marines to enter the political stage as governors, lords, and political advisors back during the Great Crusade, and Huron could have been an object lesson that Space Marines could handle that responsibility and NOT go rogue or fall to Chaos. None of the events surrounding Badab HAD to happen the way they did, but the High Lords and the Inquisition made a bad situation so much worse.

The Badab War was a bit of a who's who in terms of lesser known successor chapters. It was an effort to throw them a bone, and shine a light on an event where it wasn't the fuckin Ultramarines doing everything for once. Them or any other first founding chapters (sans the Salamanders). I really like the fact GW does take the time to remember minor sub factions of their armies exist from time to time, and will mention them in Supplements. They really do deserve more exposure because they can be pretty interesting, like the Admech Stygies VII Forge World, Novohk Necron Dynasty, The Purge Chaos Space Marines, Skyrar's Dark Wolves Chaos Space Wolves, Yme Loc Craftworld, Mortifactors Space Marines, or so many others. They make the universe of 40k feel bigger and more expansive than it being the same sub factions over and over again. I, personally, love theming my armies on minor subfactions you very rarely see on the Tabletop. My Admech are homebrew, my Chaos Space Marines are The Scourged, a Tzeentch Devoted warband, I want to paint my Space Marines as Lamenters, and other armies I might start in the future are Yme Loc Eldar, or Deathskulls Orcs.

You'll find a lot of stories where someone's fall to Chaos is not only understandable but arguably completely justified. The Imperium is such a horrible, tyrannical system that grinds its own people into dust, led by ignorance and cold hearted callousness. The offer of an alternative is completely understandable, and sometimes, like with the Thousand Sons, being a traitor is outright forced on them by the Imperium itself by its very function.

@lornbaker1083
@lornbaker1083 7 месяцев назад
The full story goes upon seeing the woman Beg for the life of the child and that it should go to the other woman rather than be cut in half. The king gave the child to the woman who was crying the most. Because no woman would ever let her child come to harm. They would do anything and seek any way for their child to be protected even if it meant they could not have their child to be with them. And so king solomon made the correct judgment. This is one of many tales of what made him consider to be the one of the wisest of kings , a king of kings indeed. And also a story that explains the deep inherent instinctual love. A mother has for their child to survive no matter what.

Ok. About the Minotaurs, and all of this comes from memory, so some of it might be wrong. They are REALLY COOL, but I also don't really like them, because they've had historical conflicts with two of my favorite Imperial forces. The Minotaurs are often the hunting dogs of the High Lords, and boy do the High Lords give them a level of wargear and impunity that most chapters don't have. The Minotaurs repopulate their chapter super quickly and are OK with obscene losses, always deploy the entire chapter at once, and once fought the Adeptus Custodes back when Guilliman returned and the High Lords decided to riot (killing a singular Custodian, which was a huge deal before the Norn Emissaries came to play soccer with Custodes heads, but they're supposed to be super big threats so that's OK). Naturally, the rebellious High Lords called their loyal Space Marine servants to come protect them, and the Minotaurs only stood down after being told to do so by one of the loyal High Lords who were cool with Guilliman being in charge. The Minotaurs, with the entire Spartan vibe, are really really into melee combat, too. Their Chapter Master is rumored to have died a few times, I think, only to show up alive and well again with no explanation offered. Also, if memory serves, he runs around with a CUSTODIAN SPEAR, and I as a fan of both the Lamenters and the golden bois often daydream about beating him, reclaiming the spear, and taking it back to the Imperial Palace or giving it to the Lamenters (along with the Aquilan Shields they so clearly deserve and need!)... Point being: the Minotaurs extremely deadly assholes here to mess you up in close combat, that nobody can really punish because a) any losses you inflict will be recouped in like two weeks, and b) they are often enforcing the will of the High Lords and typically have their favoritism, who always jump on you in their full chapter strength because there's no kill like overkill, who will steal your stuff to make up for their own losses, and have a scary chapter master that seems to be impossible to permanently kill. I just remember them as the guys who messed up my boys the Lamenters and had the gall to take on the Custodes and kill one in broad daylight. I mean, it seems to me that that their loyalties lie with the High Lords and not the Emperor's word... Oh, and the Minotaurs are very impressed with the Lamenters for fighting as hard as they did (they ARE a Blood Angels successor and therefore have quite a melee repertoire as well)... but also stole a bunch of Lamenters wargear to make up for the losses the Lamenters inflicted, including but not limited to some of the Lamenters' starships (at least one battle barge was taken, I think, the Daughter of Tempests I believe it was?). This means that, when the Lamenters set off on their Penitent Crusade, they were not only short 70% of the chapter but also missing any of their notable wargear, because the Minotaurs looted anything worth taking. The only thing they gained was that their chapter banner got some Sororitas tears on it, because they cried over the thing as they worked to fix it (officially the Sisters were crying to think that these Angels had committed such heresy, but unofficially, it's believed by some fans they were just crying at how horribly the universe treats the Lamenters). I personally don't see Sororitas tears as much of a gain, so really, the Lamenters had most of their chapter strength, their good wargear, AND a significant fraction of their fleet taken by the Minotaurs and got nothing for it in the end except more punishment. Truly the Lamenters experience, and why the Salamanders must go give them hugs. I don't like the Minotaurs, since they antagonize some of my favorite groups in the Imperium, but they're also really really cool. Odd position for me to be in, liking but also hating them.

That was until Robert came back and basically told them know what you don't get to do this anymore. You are going to get in line and behave with everyone else. Or else I am going to put you all in the ground. They didn't like that and they killed One of the ten thousand companions of the emperor because of that. It is needless to say that it's not just the ultramarines, but every single guardsman. And every single custodi's on the entirety of planet terror instantly got angry and decided to reintroduce the minotaurs to the concept of absolute assured Obliteration. It was only because a single high lord who agreed with robert stood up , begging him and the minotaurs to stand down that they were able to survive to the current day because bob was more than ready to just absolutely exterminate the entirety of their chapter Right there and then in an instant. But Robert still has it on his to-do list. Destroy the entirety of the minotaur's chapter. Right underneath kick fulgrim in the testicles if he has any left. Did Bricky mention the behind the scenes of why the Badab war happened? If i recall right, this was before the heresy was fleshed out, and GW didn't want to set things in stone yet. So they created a mini Horus Heresy. Huron is Horus (its even just a couple letters off) and theres 18 chapters fighting. The chaos side is slowly corrupted as time goes on, but still claims its just to stand up against imperial tyrany.
@101Mant
@101Mant 10 месяцев назад
Pretty sure in its original version in Rogue Trader there is no Chaos, it might even predate the Realm of Chaos books so Chaos litterly wasn't even a thing in the setting. It was a way to show of a bunch of chapters and their alternate campaign color schemes (which stopped being a thing by 2nd edition). Probably also there too show and justify space marine vs space marine battles since they were such a popular faction.
@luketfer
@luketfer 10 месяцев назад
@@101Mant Pretty much this, also back then Space Marines were less 'Emperor's Super Soldiers' and heavily played into the 'Psychotic roided out fascist enforcers' aspect that GW have tried to move away from (but kept in the lore because, lets be honest, they are exactly that). As in they were *clearly* meant to be a stand in for Star Wars style Stormtroopers and the enforcement of the Status Quo (which went against the Punk Culture most of the authors subscribed to). The original 40k art usually depicts them fairly unfavorably and certainly nowhere near as heroic as modern 40k does (heck you even have one being openly gunned down by a proto-sister of battle).
