It was the battle of Gravelotte (18th August 1870) between Prussian-Saxon forces and the French army. Here Moltke’s Germans suffered heavy casualties in their repeatedly failed attacks on the French position. However, it was due to the French commander’s incompetence and the outflanking movement of German reinforcements that eventually brought a decisive defeat to the French army.

Agreed! It's called "Tod des Majors von Hadeln" by Carl Röchling from 1870. It shows the battle of Gravelotte was part of the German - French war.

Der Marsch wurde nach der lothringischen Gemeinde Badonviller benannt. Georg Fürst, einer der bedeutendsten bayerischen Militärmusiker, komponierte den Marsch zur Erinnerung an den Angriff bayerischer Truppen auf den französischen Ort Badonviller. Daher ist es durchaus ein bayerischer Marsch.
