I dated a girl for about an year, for the first couple of months my parents and everyone thought that of course we were good friends, but something happened after that because of which I had to tell my mother all about it. I remember her reaction clearly, she had tears in her eyes and was full of shock. She held my hand and told me everything would be fine and she would take care of this. After that day, for the complete year, my mom stood by me and accepted the fact that I was dating a girl. She teased me about her, cooked her favourite food and smiled whenever I updated her on our relationship. I never got to know if my father knew about this, but my mom once told me that he talked to her and said this was a new world and every relationship was acceptable. Both of my parents come from villages of Rajasthan and Haryana, and their sole focus in life was to earn a living for themselves and their families; the fact that they, especially my mother, accepted me so readily has always baffled me. There are millions of such stories which people don't know about, of simple people who make brave choices. Everyone needs to know such stories, to understand that our country is not a single shade of colour, we have diversity and we have acceptance and we can take it, ourselves and the world forward.

Being a gay man myself, I do appreciate the authenticity of the conversations, specially the part where Shardul's character talks about his younger boyfriend ignoring him, just like he did to his older boyfriend in the past. His character portrays how most of the gay men feel to overcompensate for their masculinity. It is hard hitting, extremely naunced portrayal. More power to the film makers and I hope mainstream Indian cinema will reach a point where we can produce films like Call Me By Your Name, Carol, Brokeback Mountain - without having to need to add the "comedy".

@Broke Bitch Everything is about 'if you relate to it or not' you wouldn't even feel a connection if couldn't relate to it ,one loves a particular entertainment source merely because that person can relate to it, the characters hardship,joy,anger ,every emotion is felt by the viewer at some point in their lifetime or atleast most of the time they expect that beautiful thing to happen in their life by creating fake scenarios. Even anime,Sci-fic movies contain a bit of realism so that people who are watching in masses can relate to it. I am pretty sure these movies are great and I am not a homophobic but still I wouldn't watch it because for me to spend my hard earned money and time to something that I wouldn't even relate to is worthless but for my lgbt friends it's a gem because they will actually relate to it ,they'll know the characters emotions better because they themselves have gone through that.

As a gay guy, I must thank the makers of this particular movie for getting rid of the stereotypes and faults representation they do in the films. For a long time, the Hindi film industry has been very insensitive regarding the portrayal of queer people in movies. We are represented as nothing more than a joker whose prime job is to seduce the main hero of the film. But this film is honest and authentically represent the gay characters. And smartly teaches the older generation to comprehend the issue without showing anything that can provoke or make uncomfortable. This movie is fun, authentic and educational. #BadhaaiDo is one of the bravest and much needed films of our times. Take a bow #HarshavardhanKulkarni and Akshat... Life is very different in a middle class family in a small town and so is the belief system. To attempt to break into it and show some light deserves far more than just applause. I feel this film is one of the most sincere effort to serve humanity through cinema.I don't think that comedy was instilled to cater to the commercial space; I feel it was intentionally instilled to grasp the audience into their familiar zone, before subjecting them to the much needed social message on a so called social 'uncomfortable' subject. Hats off! #RajkummarRao for the most heartfelt honest performance... Take a bow Bhumi and the entire cast! Thank you for the great review @tried&refused Productions... also for not looking at it as just another cinema going experience and for appreciating its core human intent

For those who are commenting why they can't make it a serious movie because many people isn't interested in watching some serious lgbt movies that's why they package these as comedy movies with social messages So if u still won't support there works like chandigarh kare aashiqui, shubh mangal zyada savdhan, ek ladki ko dekha to aisa lagaa and badhaai do then how can u even expect them to risk their money on serious lgbtq movies if u don't even watch their comedic movies with social message
@raizel1155
@raizel1155 2 года назад
i havent watched other moovies you mentioned but subh mangal zyada savdhan was a badly made movie. the dad character and the blind cousin were the only ones well written rest seemed like caricatures. especially ayushmann he was awful. he did not emote well. there was no pathos or intensity in him. just bland. the other guy did well though. this is the problem. thai and japanese portray these lgbtq couples beautifully, like straight couples. tender moments like the first time they look at each other, flowers fall when the first touch. they bicker and flirt and finally fall in love. it is all shown in very romantic and dreamy with beautiful cinematography. it is not like these countries are far ahead of us in lgbtq laws, they have the same problems like we do, the marriage is banned, prejudice from old people etc. But they treat their love stories like any other straight love story. compare that to the movies we get. the bar is just low.

We can't show preachy movies right now in India to mass on this topic. But wow.... They showed love, chemistry as heterosexual couples. It was so fresh..... The music, their dates just wow. And casting NE actress in important role is cherry on top of cake.

Ever since the trailer came out, I've seen nothing but negative reviews and post on social media about this movie. I wanted to see for it myself and finally got the chance to see it yesterday on Netflix. As someone who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community, THIS is the mainstream representation that I can get behind. I appreciated that there weren't that many one-line comedic dialogues (which you see a lot in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan) to make it "relatable" to wider audience. Why do we have to be a butt of the joke for wider audience to relate to us? This movie felt authentic. I loved how this movie explored nuances of Queer identities, relationships, and societal inequalities. I absolutely loved seeing the soft, and slow romance on screen without making it sexually explicit in nature (something which Western media fails to create). And you’re right, the soundtrack is brilliant in terms of how it weaves the romance with words of the lyrics. My heart fluttered seeing the romance between Shardul/Kabir, Shardul/Guru, and Sumi/Rimjhim with having the soundtrack in the background. And I legit started sobbing when Hum Rang Hai started playing and I still tear up when I hear the song because GOD DAMN IT we are just like everyone else. We just want to be accepted and loved like anyone else.

Thank you for covering this film Jammy. I had watched the trailer and as it was, I was a bit discouraged by the generic tone of the movie. As many have said, theovie seemed like the typical North Indian sort of take on lgbtq+ that we have already seen in SMZS, apart from the lesbian bit. After it came out, I was excited to see if my preconcived notion of what the film is like is going to turn out wrong but the even more generic reviews just solidified the notion that it certainly didnt do anything out of the box. So thanks for the review, I got a fresh perspective about the movie. The movie would def do better as an ott release.

I have an opinion that may draw a lot of criticism but i feel the need to point out that the desire to have more authenticity in the casting isn't always a fair ask. What I mean is if u want a gay person to always play a gay character......r u going to enforce the same rule when a gay person wants to play a straight character? They r actors ..... It's their job to shed who they r and don the mantle of the character. While PC saying that maybe a northeastern person should have played Mary Kom is a good thing..... It shouldn't detract from the fact that she did a great job in that movie. In fact the further away a character is from the actual actor's true self......it is then that magic happens...... And I think that every actor should be allowed to try for every role.

But I am so glad, this scam was wrt the trailer 😅😂 This movie is really beautiful, so realistic and authentic! How the 4-5 characters from the community were different from each other (Some being confident in their skin even in public, the likes of shardul, who are afraid to accept that, I loved how that fear transformed by the end of the movie) I also loved how equation of Sumi and Shardul evolved.. How they were like strangers to each other even after marriage (did not show that forced empathy for somebody you do not have any frndship with!) Me and my frnd were so impressed by that ki achanak se gehri dosti nhi dikhayi.. They became friends over the course of the movie! Also loved the representation of strong but subtle women as sumi and rimjhim 😍! And yes, since you also didn't reveal the cameo, I ll not take the name too, but just wanna convey how my friend got mesmerised by that cameo even more than Rajkumar! I believe comedy is employed as a mainstream tool with which the message on a topical subject can be delivered better. Whether it is in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui or Badhaai Do. Sometimes you just have to be in the system to change the system. You have to make do with the resources and instruments at your disposal to be able to bring about change.

Difference between Ayushmann n Rajkummar is mediocrity VS excellence. All of Ayushmann's small town roles are copy paste except for if any physical transformation. Body language, energy, dressing is almost the same. Then there is Raj who does no physical transformation but most of his characters differ based on solely the portrayal and mannerisms. Take stree VS bareilly VS queen VS fanney khan VS shadi se pehle. These characters look almost the same but each had their own quirk.

Many people are complaining about the film being a comedy film but if we don't have a problem with other rom-coms then why can't we see this as a rom-com too. Yes, serious representation can be done but romance movies always had a comedy aspect in them apart from some melodrama movies. The problem is that we still don't see this as normal and something that can be represented normally as other films.

It was all downhill from there, except for the occasional Aamir Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Rajkummar Rao, Ayushman Khurrana films. Films like Chak De, Om Shanthi Om, Welcome, and Taare Zameen Par, all releasing the same year and all emerging successful, what a time! I have lost respect to the makers who who seems to follow some marketing analytics data to write scripts, and the audience who do no support films like Badhaai Do. Baaghi 3 trailer was criticized so much on RU-vid and it still made 97 crores in 3 days. And everyone keeps telling the makers to grow up. The irony.

With the less than average synopsis (as they usually are on netflix) i wasn't expecting much and only began to watch it for Rajkummar Rao. this movie however, did not disappoint. my heart was absolutely shattered in Sumi's scene with her father but the last scene somehow healed it. the more time i spent with the characters, the more i appreciated all of them as they were portrayed. this movie was believable and the romance was sweet and soft, and felt natural (way more natural than most hetero romance shown in Bollywood imo). it took decades to find parts of myself in the characters of a movie... i hope we only go upwards from here ❤

It's such a refreshing breadth of air to see the Hindi film industry make a film on this subject. Everyone has acted very well and the director has not given in to cater to usual stereotypes and created mindless comical situations. This was a sensitive subject and needed careful and sensitive portrayal which has been done. Kudos to everyone connected with the project.

I think some might not agree with me, but when we say gay couple they are a part of the community and not all of it... So a movie where we are talking gay and lesbian couple is needed as we cant say arre abhi toh vo gay couple wala movie tha then ab trans tha ab itna jaldi ye q (people normally convey this way as i have seen in a lots of comments) .....i believe even if we go 100 movies with LGBTQi community they are less ,its time we look and make them look like normal human beings (in movies too), so if we dont complain with every other movie involving girl and boy being couple we should also open arms to these new pairings.

You know the people involved in this movie, cared about the subject, the characters, the settings, their craft and It shows. Brilliant! And big shoutout to the camera crew for displaying Northern India landscape, which is rarely shown in mainstream Bolywood, at least to non-indian audiences. Greetings from France.

Just watched the movie and found it to be so much better than shubh mangal zyada saavdhan. Hits all the spots that an lgbtq person suffers from while equally being hilarious, did not go into with high expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Sad to see this movie failed to even meet its budget at the BO

What a movie! Best Bollywood movie I have watched in a long looooooooong time. I can't sit through any of the major releases for more than 5 mins, but this..... This movie deserves more cheers and accolades! Rajkumar Rao, my favourite, never disappoints! I love Bhumi!

I absolutely loved the movie and the mature way that they have handled a sensitive issue... It is refreshing to see homosexual relationships being normalised and gives a very necessary glimpse into their struggles... Love is love... That is the message... I was really touched during the last song

These small town from Hindi heartland stories with social message movies has become very formulaic, which makes them cookie cutterish, unentertaining, inorganic. Not saying there is any problem with the subgenre of small town social message films

I can't believe that this movie initially had such low ratings. Thanks to RU-vidrs like Jammy and many intellectual people who made it their mission to spread word of mouth to improve the ratings of this movie. Even I thought that this movie is well suited for OTT but maybe it was a conscious decision from makers to have it release in theatres first to make general audience atleast aware of the idea and make it reach the masses. But yes changes can't be made in a day and changing the opinions of people from small cities and Conservative backgrounds is a uphill task.

The percentage of jumps from first Friday..... the trending...to first Saturday and a massive huge jump on Sunday.. percentage wise... is the best compared to any other film released in the Pandemic... even better than the only hit film Sooryavanshi.... This is historic.... when considering a lot of people in the trade thought it was a damp squib.... I think audiences are mesmerised by the treatment of the film, the very sensitive topic and fantastic performances in the film.... This is an outstanding film, and will go down as a milestone in the history of Indian cinema....

I'm actually fed up with this genre of movies. Usually set in Hindi belt, dealing with a taboo topic, light hearted comedy, similar characters, hell even the same actors. Like you can't make any topic a comedy, they have to be dealt with sensitivity and not an "all's well that end's well" kinda stories. Ayushman Khurana made a whole carreer out of such movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and I am glad that I could watch it with my mom and introduce her to the topic through the film. She too appreciated it which wouldn't have been possible if the film didn't have the comic treatment. So, to let the public inside the theatres, currently entertainment factor is important for such movies. Really loved the performance of Raj, Bhumi and Sheeba Chadda. Also, cameo of Gulshan Devaiyah was a treat to watch.
