@@arrya5372 He did receive his PhD from Cornell and was a lecturer at UCLA in the past, but for a number of years now he has lived in upstate New York and teaches at Cornell pretty much exclusively. You can look him up on their faculty page. Bad Religion just released their first official autobiography a few weeks ago, called 'Do What You Want: The Story of Bad Religion'. It's a great read, I highly recommend it. Greg has also written a couple books on science & evolution ('Anarchy Evolution' and 'Population Wars') which are also great but definitely get a little technical & require some focus to read & understand. There's also a book by a history professor who works at a Christian university that consists mainly of email correspondence between himself & Greg that's an interesting read, called 'Is Belief in God Good, Bad, or Irrelevant?' And these are just some of the things that Greg has done! Then you have Mr. Brett, who founded & still runs Epitaph Records, and all the amazing music that the other band members, both current and former, create outside the band. Like Brooks Wackerman, the former drummer, is now the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold!

It's very rare to see reactions to Bad Religion, and it's a damn shame because they're an awesome band!😄I'm a woman in my early 40's,and was into the Punk/Gothic scene in the 80's,90's.I went to my first Bad Religion show at the age of 15,and it was amazing.☺️If I may suggest a few of my favorite bands and particular songs: -Bad Religion "Infected" -Ministry "Stigmata" -Echo and the Bunnymen "The Killing Moon" -Nine Inch Nails "Terrible Lie" The Cure "Boys Don't Cry"

I don't need to be a global citizen Because I'm blessed by nationality I'm member of a growing populace We enforce our popularity There are things that seem to pull us under And there are things that drag us down But there's a power and a vital presence That's lurking all around We've got the American Jesus See him on the interstate We've got the American Jesus He helped build the president's estate I feel sorry for the earth's population 'Cause so few live in the U.S.A. At least the foreigners can copy our morality They can visit but they cannot stay Only precious few can garner the prosperity It makes us walk with renewed confidence We've got a place to go when we die And the architect resides right here We've got the American Jesus Fostering their shame on faith We've got the American Jesus Overwhelming millions every day He's the farmers barren fields The force the army wields The expression in the faces of the starving millions The power of the man he's the fuel that drives the clan He's the motive and conscience of the murderer He's the preacher on t.v., the false sincerity The form letter that's written by the big computers The nuclear bombs and the kids with no moms And I'm fearful that he's inside me We've got the American Jesus See him on the interstate We've got the American Jesus Exercising his authority We've got the American Jesus Fostering their shame on faith We've got the American Jesus Overwhelming millions every day, eah One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. One nation, under god. It's essentially about how (some) Americans use Christianity to justify their lifestyles, their politics, their prejudices, and their perceived superiority over the rest of the world. And of course religious people think their god is just like them, hence American Jesus.

This entire album, "Recipe for Hate", is a true classic. Dropped in 1993. Bad Religion has been telling people what's been up in this crazy world for decades. Yea, the "Architect resides right here". It goes deeper than the political fodder.

Thank you for reacting this! This is my top 3 band always. I actually didn’t love this one until I read the lyrics. They’re heavy into lyrics. I have all 17 of their albums. Probs Tiny Voices or Them and Us or Sorrow...but the song that gives me chills, for over 20 years, is Along the Way. In this song he’s talking about how Jesus is “American” bc American religious zealots use religion to justify hate sometimes. So he’s calling those ppl out by saying they’re only worshipping the Jesus they want to.

I recommend you to choose a group of shorts songs but very strong ones: I want to conquer the world, How much is enough, The Paranoid Style, Them and Us, Modern Man… Have a great start! The song is a critique on American exceptionalism and this version of Jesus you see touted by right wing Christians, which is a very Americanized version of him. Even though the band is atheistic, I can see Christians getting behind the message because the song is critical of the way people use Christianity for bad things. If I was a Christian (I have been one before.), I'd be angry that people are using my faith to drive things like wars, the KKK, commercialism, etc.

I like how you said you like him sort of rapping because it’s actually a punk style which shows hip hop/rap owes to punk because punk was big in New York City in the 70’s and 80’s and it gave inspiration to the burgeoning hip hop scene but the punks got the style from Ska and reggae bands so it actually all started in the Caribbean

And yes, the lead singer has a PhD in evolutionary biology and taught some. “Bad Religion” means any construct or dogma that is so structured it encourages hate to grow within it, like the church or police. Not all, of course, but some. I’m Christian and I love this band...but I’m not going to wear their shirt in public bc I’m trying to be respectful of others who may not understand it’s a band. If I wear to wear a BR shirt without caring about others that might be offended...then that’d be a bad religion!

I've never thought of this song as having much to do with Christianity, actually. I think American Jesus refers more to how America has built itself up as the world's savior and the system we put our faith in that's ultimately run by corporations, how as Americans we have kind of a God complex when it comes to the rest of the world. Bad Religion has plenty of songs about the issues that come with organized religion, I just don't really think this is one of them

The lead singer of Bad Religion teaches at Cornell University also this song is talking about the "American" version of Jesus who waves an American flag and basically is the opposite of everything he stands for. All these people in America who claim to be so Christian and always talking about how they love Jesus and pray for everything but the second its time to use those practices people wanna let immigrants die instead of come here for help. Everything here people like to think would be supported by jesus and God from killing people in other countries in wars to how poorly we take care of the planet. This song is basically about how Jesus in America is nothing more than a ticket to do what we want and use faith to forgive ourselves so we don't need be better humans and in the end he says I'm fearful that he's inside me. He doesn't want this american jesus to be any part of him he wants to be someone who takes action to do things that fix problems and try to make things right instead of waiting for some invisible man to solve all our problems.
