In this video, Matt Willis Bagpiper alters the standard approach to learning the standard highland bagpipe scale, focusing on either lifting or lowering the fingers without any of the more complicated cross fingering motions (that's for the next part, which can be found here: • Bagpipe Lesson 5: The ... ).

As a Thai, it's really difficult to find a way to Learn bagpipe in Thailand. I bought my chanter since I studied in Melbourne like 15 years ago and just keep it in the drawer for years just because I don't know how to start playing. Then I found your chanel like 2 weeks ago mate, I just wanna tell you that you push me to grab my chanter and start practising again after it's been kept in my drawer for more than 10 years. Thanks!

Started learning the pipes as a 10 yr old, got through to to the actual bagpipes, when I took them home as a 13 yr old I couldn’t work them out, embarrassed I never went back to my lessons so had to forfeit the pipes to another learner. I’ve always regretted it. I have kept my chanter and books, decided I’d give your teaching a go. Cross fingers I can pick it up again. My chanter is a wooden one with a very chewed on mouth piece. I’m in Australia

Another thing to help beginners is to get them used to moving their fingers in groups even when they aren't playing the chanter. I have my students place their low hand flat on a table and lift the ring and pinky fingers up and down together, then the middle and ring fingers, and then the index, middle and ring fingers while keeping the rest of the hand flat on the table. It's something they can do at work or school even when they don't have their chanter nearby, and it helps them develop muscle memory. Keeping the index finger down and alternating between tapping the middle and pinky fingers on the table while the ring finger stays up (and relatively still) helps with C to B changes. Same kind of exercises when we eventually get to birls and bubbly notes. I've noticed high energy students who tend to fidget take it on as a natural habit.

Thanks Marcblur. That makes a lot of sense to an old(er) beginner. I used to play Alto sax were the fingering is so different. It will take a bit, as you say, for muscle memory to take hold, for me at least. Matt really has it together and an excellent instructor, easy to follow alone. All good !

I just spent 4 days learning to make a low G . Then go from low G to high A and back again. and boom. i realized that i cannot lead from my ring finger so i make that brr sound. grrrrrrr. will try your training technique.
@Marcblur
@Marcblur 3 года назад
@@TheBelrick Another really good one to practice is low G to E without a little tiny low A sneaking in. And believe me, it still catches me from time to time. Lift the E finger first, and then the pinkie. Same with the transition to high A. Thumb off first, and then all the fingers to make the note proper. If you're going from high A or E to low G, put the pinky down first and then the rest of the fingers that make the note. It seems a lot of work, but when you practice it slowly with accuracy, it eventually becomes muscle memory you don't have to think about.

I did about and hour practice yesterday and I've done about an hour today. And I can now do the top 2 lines cleanly and the bottom 2 lines almost (high A to low A sounds horrible). Thank you, Matt. I started piping in 2010 and played for several years. Life got in the way, and I have had to put piping on the back burner. I am picking it back up however I know full well that I don't even want to touch my pipes until I get fluent on the chanter again. I've been brushing up with your lessons and print outs. Amazing how much I have forgotten and how sloppy I have become not to mention out of shape. The fatigue in my mouth sets in pretty quick. I just want to let you know how much I appreciate your free lessons and how much they have helped me get back into it and improve even more so than when I was playing regularly. What I'm doing now is using a Tsunami that is one finger at a time so the LA finger goes up and down hearing a clear LG then the B finger alone goes up and down so from LG to a "false" B This all the way up to HA. This gives them a first contact with the chanter and it's holes. the second stage is different tsunami as of B it doesn't go to LG but the LA that is to the hole below. The idea is to start getting some agility before attempting a proper scale. This is only applicable to students with no músical background at all.

@MattWillisBagpiper

Mind over matter? I'll keep my students on the basic scale until the fingers are pristine. Or as close to pristine as I can get. Any extra curl in either hand will absolutely keep you from being able to play the future grace notes and embellishments properly. Be patience, and really think of this instrument as being somethign totally different than your recorder, not an extension of your recorder technique. Best of luck!

Unfortunately, not something I can diagnose without hearing & seeing. Most woodwind players tend to overblow the practice chanter and the intervals between notes are not quite the same as normal equal temperament.

@@MattWillisBagpiper Thanks for replying. My chanter is a cheap piece of junk. It's one of those white plastic top deals and measures 19.25". I am 5'2" and I can't keep my right wrist straight when trying to "play" it. I don't think the sound is proper either. Do you know which brand has the shortest regular chanter? I think the Gibson said it was 17.25". I would buy a junior size, but I want the holes to match a bagpipe's chanter. That's another thing with the cheap chanter - the holes are tiny and not deep set/embedded; I can barely feel them. I'm relieved to know that good ones are supposed to have holes you can actually feel! If you can recommend a good, short chanter, I'd be grateful. Have a good one.

I am an absolute beginner (like my instrument literally arrived 3 days ago lol). I just want to make sure I'm developing good habits from the start. I'm playing on a R.G. Hardie long Twist Trap practice chanter with the included reeds. My reed seems to have a solid tone on the other notes so I don't believe that's the issue. Seems we have different approaches. There are 20+ videos out there of folks just playing the scale and saying "do this"... I'm trying to describe in detail the process to someone who's never tried it before (or to someone who has and as had issues).

@@MattWillisBagpiper Agree with what you're saying, and I find it really interesting your explanations throughout all the videos (there's times when the explanation helps it sink in better). I also like the small text comments you include in the videos as little pointers, etc.

Are you putting enough air through the reed? Depending on the chanter and reed, it may take more breath pressure than you're expecting.
