Choosing a practice chanter is very underrated in my opinion. Getting a practice chanter that does not suit you can be discouraging, especially if the person thinks that THEY are the problem (which is NOT the case). If you want clarification on anything in this video, please comment below :)
I play a medium strength reed on oboe (cane not synthetic). What would your advice be regarding the reed for the practice chanter? Should I still go with a plastic reed? Suggestions on reed strength?
Hi Tara, im not familiar with oboes, but they look very similar to pipe reeds (only longer and thicker). So, I would try the same strength, or a medium-hard reed. If the reed is a bit hard to start, you can shave the reed (small bits) above the binding. Oboe reeds look like they would take more air pressure than pipe reeds (i could be wrong), so if that’s accurate, the same strength should work.
