In the heart of Edinburgh, in the district of Leith, there is a unique place that takes us back in time. William Sinclair & Son, one of the last existing companies in Scotland producing bagpipes, opens the doors of their workshop where tradition meets craftsmanship.
For nearly 100 years, this family business has been nurturing old methods and tools to create instruments that have become a symbol of Scottish culture. The process of making bagpipes is long and arduous, requiring extensive knowledge, patience, and precision. The wooden parts of the instruments are shaped and crafted in a manner that has remained unchanged for decades. Every stage of production, from selecting the wood to the final tuning of the instrument, is done by hand by experienced craftsmen.
The documentary film showcasing the activities of the William Sinclair & Son workshop is not just a story about bagpipe production but also a journey into a world where passion for tradition and sound is passed down from generation to generation. The camera takes us inside the workshop, revealing the nooks and crannies where these extraordinary instruments are made. We can see how tools from the past century still find their place in the modern world, and how craftsmen meticulously craft each element of the bagpipe.
This extraordinary place in Leith stands as a testament to the durability of Scottish cultural heritage. Thanks to William Sinclair & Son, the traditional sound of bagpipes continues to resonate, allowing us to feel the magic of bygone times where every sound was the result of human labor, knowledge, and love for music.
This inspiring documentary film is the final project of Włodzimierz Liber, completed as part of his studies in AV Technology at Edinburgh College in 2022. We invite you to watch it to see how tradition and craftsmanship can withstand the test of time, conveying extraordinary stories hidden in the sounds of bagpipes.

With great respect to the Scottish masters. You keep the traditions alive and pass on the traditions of making bagpipes to the next generation. It's amazing. Good health to you, greetings from a piper from Russia.🌻 🥃

Very nice gentlemen. Both as an aspiring piper and as machinist by profession, I find this video interesting. I wish you all the luck to keep your family tradition going, and to keep our countries heritage alive.

Met Alistair Sinclair a few times - felt a bit embarrassed getting the great man to fix a few wee things for me - and he was always humble and generous and an absolute gentleman. I have a beautiful Sinclair pipe chanter from the 70's made by Alistair's father. Was sad to hear of his passing and so glad to hear the Sinclair Tradition is carrying on.

My grandmother grew up on Madeira and remembers hearing the old man tuning and practicing. I’m proud of my heritage, and I play my pipes with pride.

What a wonderful video. I met grandad Sinclair when I was a lad. A fine man always happy to take time out to sort my bagpipe problems. I then dealt with his son and his son. A full family business

My best memories of the sound of the pipes was when I learning Scottish dancing as a young boy(sword dance, reel of tulloch, highland fling sailors dance and irish jig) and in competitions at the local fair! We had a large Scottish community/Caledonian society In Kalgoorlie/Boulder. I am now 66

Great video. My dad played Sinclair pipes, I grew up in Leith and I remember my dad talking about Sinclair and Sons. I play my grandfathers Henry Stark pipes made a hundred years ago but I still remember that my dads pipes sounded better.
