Chris finds two vintage practice chanters - circa 1890s or so - and also a cane practice chanter reed from the 1950s. The chanters are tested against a modern practice chanter. The vintage reed is played as is a new Apps cane and a plastic practice reed. The book Chris references is Highland Bagpipe Makers by Jeannie Campbell.

I gave a Glen practice chanter away. I wish I’d kept in now. The top part and the ivory sole was really thin and the sole was small compared to my 1960s Henderson. I got it as a swap for a Kintail practice chanter which had an imitation horn sole from the Pipe Major of the Newmains and district colliery pipe band, back in the 1970s. Wow, where did the years go?!

Chris a great and very educational video. I love a practice chanter pitched ar 440 hz or 666 hz. Keep up the great work, superb. I also understand that Jeff has posted a pipe chanter with tuning slides, Really looking forward to your review in the near future.

Do you come across many of the old practice chanters? What kind of prices do they fetch?

Hello Frach. I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems. It sounds like you need to close the mouth of the reed down by squeezing the brass bridle. Here's a short video of me explaining this; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lesHHebZnOM.html Let me know how you get on. I'm here to help!
