Very interesting proceedure Chris. I play at 466 all the time as my father and grandfather did (both Army Pipers) all the way back to the 1920's. I presume the Army played 466 because of the Brass instruments? I find however that to stop the tenor drones tuning too high on the stalks I have to use drone extenders.

The army pipers didn't play in 466 unless they had a gig with brass as they do today. Glad you enjoyed the vid.

@@AppsReeds that’s interesting my grandfathers army pipe chanter (Starke) from the 1920’s tunes at 466 with a modern reed (G1). This got me curious. I found a Piping Press article from 2017 which references an "important Notice" from J&R Glens catalogue in 1929. "The particular attention of Pipe Band Presidents is drawn to Army Council Instruction No.544 of 19th December 1928 authorising the change in all army bands from High Pitch to Low Pitch. " , By Low pitch they means A=439!

@MAMDAVEM Very interesting. A 439 is incredibly low! I may have to re-think my ideas about this. I have some old reeds that date back to the 50's but the oldest chanter I have dates back to the turn of the last century. I wish I had some reeds the same age!
