The Story of "Bahay na Brutal"
Architecture and Construction: Ar. Ed Ramos
Interior Design and Decocation: IDr Ivy Almario
"Bahay na Brutal" is a two-storey house located in a quiet residential village within Taguig's Central Business District. It is a collaboration between Interior Designer, Ivy Almario of Atelier Almario and Architect Ed, a fan of brutalist architecture.
Originally, the intention is to create a tropical breathing box of concrete and glass but as the construction progresses, patterns, hues and tones were added resulting to an interesting palette of cement, black, white and wood. To keep it true to its name, the exterior remained unpainted.
Let us take you to a tour inside this tropical box that we call: Bahay na Brutal.

Nice. Medyo mahirap lang linisan, ang daming jalousie. Having grown up in a house with jalousie windows, I remember my mom na inaakyat ang bintana namin almost everyday just to clean each and every jalousie. 😅

Wow! Perfect house for the next lockdowns. Gracious volumes. Cross-ventilation. Outside in. Tropical light. I have practical concerns, but that's for another venue/ platform. For now, we celebrate. This house is an architectural gem. Brutalist yet generous, and surprisingly restrained. Congrats to the architect, the ID, the builders (and the tilers!) ... and most especially to the owner, for having that vision to begin with.

Finally found a house (in the Phils) that has all the elements of a functional, cohesive, cozy and Pinoy-styled home. It stands on its own! Dreaming to build one following the same concept. I especially love the subtle brutalist style, and oh the louvre windows! Great work to the team behind this masterpiece!

Ganda architect, you earned a new fan. I'm an architect as well so curious lang ako sa Scandinavian na mga furnitures kung true to it's style ba talaga yun or may mga ibang variant yung style na yun. Kasi iba yung vision ko mag sinabing Scandinavian architecture or furnitures.

I chanced upon this video and am impressed! Architect Ed, what about mosquitoes and lizards entering the house, I didn't see any screens on the jalousies? The screens will lessen he impact of the clarity of the glass I know but mosquitoes are a big problem too.

I like the ventilation but I have had it with black and white theme. Brutalist buildings are described as cold already, konting warmth na lang siguro.

Beautiful house. I love it.. So open and airy, but my concern are the insects. Flies and mosquitoes. I don't see any screens on the windows.I am sure the screens will destroy the aesthetics of this house. And that is a problem.

Screen is an option. But we do not want it to ruin our design so electric insect repellent were used. With or without screen or big glass windows, cleaning your house is a must.

I suggested giant jalousie windows for our dream house but my husband find it “chaka” raw. Sabi ko, with the right design at materials, di magiging chaka yan. Super maaliwalas kaya. Stumbled upon this video and instantly became a fan. I like the concept. Not pretentious particularly not appropriating designs from other cultures. @@pinhochua6974madaling punasan yan kasi wala naman screen and grills. Our windows are jalousie too, mahirap punasan because of the screen inside and the window grills outside, salasalabit ang kamay mo kng pupunasan mo from the outside and need to remove the window screen naman if you want to clean ng dirediretso from the inside. I’m sure naman okay ang security ng house and even the village/subd where that house is located kasi kng ganyan window, madali lang tanggalin at pasukin ang bahay. But its really airy kng jalousie window ang gamit dahil pasok lahat ng hangin, good luck lang sa alikabok.

Arch Ed, meron din po kayo ng sample ng bahay na Brutalist Architectural Style? Love ko rin ang Brutalist Architecture! Nagagandahan ako sa design ng Brutalist Architecture. Basta pag nakarinig ako ng brutal o brutalist, mga una kong naiisip, National Theater (Tanghalang Pambansa), PICC (Philippine International Convention Center) at Philippine Heart Center.
