This train ride was one of the highlights of my May 2019 Swiss rail holiday. The big surprise was finding that the little red train at Gais had a tourist's open wagon attached at the front, so you really got to see close up that spectacular drop in height down to Altstätten made possible by the rack and pinion system. It was a Sunday, so perhaps a special treat was laid on, and all for 'free' with my Interrail card. There are wonderful views over the Rhine Valley to the Austrian and Liechtensteiner mountains beyond. At Altstätten, I understand that the narrow gauge tracks once continued beyond the station for about 2km as a town tramway to reach the mainline station, but this is now a bus service. The Appenzeller Railway is a fascinating and smartly run service in a beautiful part of Switzerland. Thank you for posting this. John from England.
