Bahu Fort in Jammu
Jammu, is a city of architectural grandeur and delight and when it comes to great structures, some of the best historical monuments are sheltered in this “City of Temples”. Some of the erstwhile structures are reminiscent of the great historical times that Jammu had witnessed across the rules of different rulers who have ruled Jammu and left a strong impact of their cultural taste on the locales of Jammu. One of such historical monuments is the Bahu fort, which is a testimony to the rich cultural elegance and architectural value of the ancient times. A visit to this place is a must and it should find a spot in your travel itinerary during your travel to Jammu.
The Bahu fort was built by Raja Bahu Lochan who was the brother of the founder of the city of Jammu, Raja Jambu Lochan. This fort underwent several structural changes in order to retain its strength and beauty. The fort was originally built some three thousand years ago and was refurbished by the Dogra dynasty rulers in the 19th century. In 1585,the current fort was rebuilt, possibly at the same location as the ancient fort, by Autar Dev, the grandson of King Kapoor Dev.
This fort has undergone several demolitions and reconstructions over the years till the time, Maharaja Gulab Singh reconstructed the present fort in the 19th century, which was further refurbished during the rule of Maharaja Ranbir Singh. They first established temples for their tutelary deities; and the image of Mahakali sanctified in the temple in the fort was sourced from Ayodhya.
Kol Kandoli temple
Kol Kandoli Temple is situated in Nagrota city in Jammu & Kashmir state ata distance of 14 km from Jammu. The temple is dedicated to Mata Vaishno Devi. The Goddess is established in this temple in the form of a pindi. It is believed to be good to visit this temple before starting the journey for Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The temple is also known as first glimpse Kol Kandoli of Mata Vaishno Devi.
The temple derives its name from two words Kaul-Kandoli. Kol means bowl and Kandoli means marbles. The city was earlier known as Nagraj and spanned across 13 kosa area.
According to mythology, Mata Vaishno appeared here at the age of 5 years in the form of a little girl and did penance here for 12 years. After the penance, she settled here in the form of a pindi. In this temple, the Goddess Herself appears before the devotees in the form of a natural pindi and fulfils the wishes of Her devotees. The Goddess had herself played marbles and swing along with local girls here. During the 12 years penance, the Goddess performed many Havans for the world peace. Mahamaya had presented the silver bowls here four times. Mahamaya offered 36 types of food prepared in the silver bowls to 330 million deities.
When The Goddess shook the bowl on the ground, water started to coming out from the earth and then all the deities drank that water. The devotees then made a well there and named it after the Goddess. In the Mahabharata era when Pandavas were under Agyat Vaas, they got to know about the Goddess in Nagraj village. Then they all visited the place and prayed before the Goddess for the ending of their agyaat vaas and also for retrieval of their kingdom. Then the Goddess appeared before them and asked them to build a temple for Her. They all built a temple there in one night which spanned for 6 months.
Raghunath temple
Raghunath Temple, with seven shrines each with its own `Shikhara`, (shikhara, a Sanskrit word translating literally to `mountain peak`, refers to the rising tower in the Hindu temple architecture in north India) is one of the largest temple complexes of north India, located in Jammu city. Maharaja Gulab Singh and his son Maharaj Ranbir Singh built the temple, during the period of 1853-1860. The temple has many gods enshrined, but the presiding deity is Lord Ram, an `avatar` (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. The temple came under public glare and intense scan, when in November 24, 2002, while the Hindus were performing puja in the complex, the `fidayeen` (suicide tactic used by militants) terrorist attack took place, resulting in at least 10 deaths, injuring several devotees.
The gigantic Raghunath temple has seven lofty `shikharas`, where every shrine has its own shikhar. On the very entrance to the temple, a portrait of Maharana Ranbir Singh and an image of Lord Hanuman exaggerate the site. The centrals shrine is dedicated to Lord Ram / Raghunath, who is the commanding deity.
