I have a cool story. My Grandad passed in 99 and the family sold his equipment. 15 years later my brother bought a Baler at an auction, and went to get it and thought things about it looked familiar. So he took a picture of the serial number and went to the local JD dealership, and was able to prove that it was the one bought by my Grandfather. I grew up on my Grandad's farm and was driving tractors by age 7 and was actually good at it by age 10. I have to say that those days cutting, raking, baling, or bush hogging were some of the best times in my life. Hours in a tractor seat alone is great relaxation. Maybe not for everyone, but I found it enjoyable.

I miss him so much, and it's even more evident when I watch you and your son. I didn't realize then that I was learning so much about work, life, and being a good person. This reminds me of when I was a kid from about 9 - 12 years old. There were 3 Mennonite families in our community (Hephzibah, GA) and they all had kids my age. I used to go from farm to farm helping in the fields, cutting silage, baling hay & filling up the silo. They were all dairy farmers and I used to help 'em milk in the evenings. What a great time I had as a kid working around dairy farms. I certainly cherish those fond memories. My mother was a Mennonite but we grew up as Southern Baptists. Cheers from eastern TN

i grew up in N.W. Iowa working summers behind a square baler. farmers would cut it in the morning, rake it in the afternoon, again the next morning, then bale it and put it in the barn that afternoon. usually got 2 good cuttings a year. i usually made movie and pizza money for most of the school year putting up hay. good times.

@cannon3267 I'm from nw Iowa also. We would cut, rake, and bale all the same day until we had 5-6 flat racks. Usually 2 got put up in the barn the same day too. Tough work but very rewarding.

Derek, as much as I love your car-related content, I have to say... you and your family are the salt-of-the-earth Americans whose ancestors helped to produce the products that grew this nation into what is is now... and I love learning about what that took, and what it still takes... to do that very thing. Half of the population of this country has little knowledge of what it takes to achieve this. I am in awe of this... and love learning how it's done. Your knowledge of working the land is important to pass on to future generations, who would otherwise be lost without this knowledge. Much of the peoples of this great nation do not realize the importance of this.

The beauty of that older, smaller equipment, is that not only is it a great way for a small hold farmer get started; but it is great starter equipment for the youngsters. Soon as kids in our community could stomp the break peddles and armstrong steer, they were tedding hay and driving the hay wagon with the little ol Fords, Case or Farmalls. (There was only small square bales then.) Our two youngest used to tandem drive the old pickup as our bale getter. The youngest (6) sat on the driver's side and worked the peddles, and her 9 yr old sister steered, shifted and hollered as to which peddle to push😀 Farm kids are smart kids! Good on you getting them onto the land.

And regardless it was always 95 degree's and humid. Derek needs to find a small square bailer just so the kids get to experience throwing and stacking in 90 degree weather all the while wearing a long sleeve canvas shirt. Finding snakes in the bails was always fun. Uncle refused to upgrade his old wisconson machine so one bail would be 45 pounds and the next 100. Took 2 of us to get them on the truck.

Practice will make your bailes better. Spend more time on the side of the windrows. Also, if you reduce your speed over ground, while keeping PTO/RPM will yeild a more dense baile( more pounds/calories per baile for livestock feeders). Love what you do my Friend❤😊 Kudos to Bradley as well, a fine young Gentleman.

Great video as always! The drone shots really help a Fella understand what a Guy is trying to explain working in the hay field! This Fella is more about the pictures than the “constructions”!
