Quick review of the new for 2020 Lew's Tournament MP baitcasting reel, in the 7.5:1 gear ratio. So far really enjoying this reel in terms of ergonomics and great features!

I asked Lew's product support what MB and MP stand for and they just said that "they are series model numbers that are for product identification".

I started with a Fuego but due to operator error, I ended up stripping out the pinion gear. (new fisherman) Got the Tournament MP as a replacement and it's paired with an Abu Vengeance rod. Neat coincidence. 😊

I did the same as you, bought it as a replacement to a broken abu. (Mine was a black max, first baitcaster I bought! Like 3 years ago) absolutely loved it and still fished it. I have tatulas and high end abus, but that black max has a soft spot in my heart. The lews was one of 2 lefties the local shop had. Chose between this and a curado. Went with the lews. This is the first reel ill have to mess with centrifugal brakes though, I never use brakes all thumb, really hoping work goes by fast so I can test it out! Nice review! Learned some stuff about this! All the reviews have been great! Keep it up man! Subscribed!

Awesome to hear!! And thanks for watching man, appreciate the feedback! 👍🎣 I have taken a liking to the centrifugal breaks or a combination of those with magnetic like on the Lew's. Black max/ultra max was definitely a trusty starter reel though, agreed!

question, sorry new to magnets, do you have to set the magnets too manually, if so , how do you turn on vs off?

@charliepalmer2465 no worries - yes you set them manually using a dial on the side of the reel. It usually is numbered in increments from 0 (off) to 10 or more (max pressure). You adjust it based on weight of your lure and usually wind conditions. I usually have it a quarter up to half way turned on. Start with it higher and do a practice cast and then can slowly dial down and re-cast!

What I'm concerned about these reels, is the durability of those aluminum gears. Any opines appreciated.

That is a valid concern. I think the majority of reels nowadays are made with aluminum or brass gears. For routine freshwater use I haven't had any unusual or early wear with aluminum personally.

Great review, what number would you recommend on the break for a 1/2 oz swim bait or jig?

Thanks for watching! I'd recommend either the 6 speed or 7 speed gear ratio for those types of lures! The lower the ratio number, the higher the torque - and the higher the ratio the quicker the line take up will be. So a speed vs power decision!

What does the mb or mp stand for i know lfs is lighter,stronger,faster ? If anyone has any idea

I'm not 100% certain on this one, sorry! I couldn't find it advertised anywhere - if I had to guess it would be Mach something? Tournament mach black or tournament mach pro? Since they seem to use mach in their naming scheme. But that's just a guess. It may just be a delineation between different models (like abu garcia revo x and revo s). Thanks for watching!
