That trophy truck is a serious monster machine... The power & torque not to mention what its build for makes it dangerous anywhere... Bottom line its a sick as machine that i wish i can at least sit behind the wheel and wet my self involuntarily xp lol

Thats a feeling you gotta get used too.. going into the corners with the trophy truck, knowing its not gonna flip over but it is gonna feel like it because of the 30 inches of wheel/ suspension travel lol. Cool video..

The bottom line is that both driver and truck were taken out of their natural habitat and placed in a situation completely different from what their used to. That truck was built for the sole purpose of being the fast off-road. Given the situation and the fact that they left the baja tires on the truck, I'd say they still did a hell of a job. But let's see a Boss 302 shred through the desert as is.

***** Those tires actually have good grip and sidewall stiffness. Suspension wise though I'm shocked that it wasn't totally worthless at speeds approaching the boss302. I wonder what a simple shock rebuild for much more stiffness and less travel would have done for them, combined with atleast lowering by using the already present spring collars on those shocks.

The difference between a big block and a small block is not displacement, it is he size of the engine block hence the name. A big block has very large water passages, and quite a large space between cylinders, where as a small block has the cylinders very close, and smaller water passages. Also the small block has its valves side by side, where as the big block has the valves angled to prove better flow. There were 400+ Cubic inch small blocks from the factory, and 396 big blocks so it wasn't all about displacement.

Out of all vehicles I want to own on planet earth a perfectly tuned Baja Racing rig is #1 on my list... & to round off my top 3... at #2 I would love to have a Koenigsegg Agera R... yes I am fully aware that it isn't that fastest car in the world but it is a very cool car. Then at #3 I of course as well as so many other would like to have the fastest car in the world.. the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Why do I want a Baja rig over those two marvels? Idk really?

Ummmm...anyone in so cal who lives remotely close to the desery (which is 98% of so-cal) knows what baja is....also we all know what baja trucks look like because we see them passing us on dirt when we're flooring it on the freeway. The real interest for me is the construction.

I have a suggestion. Trophy truck at a mud bog event. Not just in some little puddle, but one of them mud bogs where people bring small to gargantuan trucks and try their luck in deep rutted up mud, somewhere out in banjo-ville.

That 2012 Boss at sea level is a low 12 second car ( 12.3 at 116mph ).Motortrend times. You must be at higher elevations which will negatively affect a normally aspirated Motor’s horsepower levels.

I remember Ivan Stuart's Toyota back in the late 80s. That truck was seriously radical back then. By todays standard it would be pretty mild. The advancements in the trucks are amazing.

I remember the full size class 8 trucks blowing by me on my dirtbike in AZ in the 80's. And this one is much crazier then those were. All I have to say is Mr. Steele is one driving Mfer to do Willow in that time on a race in the dirt prepped truck with marshmallow suspension. Firm that thing up and lower it with some street tires and it would flat waste the Mustang. And if there are ANY doubts how badass this rig is, have anything that may beat it at Willow follow it in it's playground...

its no suprise the trophy truck has those good of times it should I'm about to have one built and for one in this cat. can easily cost 250K to 300K or more. what I"m have built is a luxury prerunner basically all the same tube chassis and suspension as a trophy truck but the full interior dash a/c heat radio power window etc. as a regular truck and its costing me nearly 200k for all parts and labor. and a very long process.

13.2 is very impressive in a Baja truck. That's one tenth faster than my best time in moderately built SVT Lightning. I had traction issues though. Man that Baja truck is a beast in every sense.

Love the trophy truck and since I'm a dirt guy give me a great offroad vehicle ready for high speed desert riding any day. My sports cars don't have my heart like my can am x3. The x3 in the dirt gets my blood hot running hard n fast in the desert where as the sport car at 180 mphs just get my blood warm

It weights about the same as the SVT raptor, but that trophy truck is pretty much supercharged. How about a modded raptor and a tune up and you would see almost identical if not better numbers. I am just being fair, but still that is a sick trophy truck!! Very nice suspension too!

These guys and gals are a really cool team. My aunt is part of their support team, and they were trying to recruit me as a navigator for one of the classes. Part of me really wished I stayed and join the team, but I ended up joining the Navy ha-ha. Still love off roading and off road racing.

@suhrreal yes, 800 hp runs in the 13s. It weighs over 6000lbs. The mustang only weighs 4000. Its also not geared or has the suspension for fast launches.

i've seen that. i think you misunderstood me. You said the raptor can go anywhere this baja truck can go at 3/4 the pace. they said they drive it 100+ mph, and over 3 foot whoops. Now, the raptor is a pretty decent truck (for a ford anyways) but i still don't think it could keep up with the baja truck at 3/4 the pace (considering that would mean hitting 3 foot whoops going 75+ and the raptor doesn't have that much suspension travel)

Of course the TT is the pinnacle it's going in a 3D environment vs the 2D in road racing and drag where is almost only 1D. Not so fast on a racetrack? But there is no need to because you can cut almost any corner through ruts which is more fun.. In a serpentine climbing road where everybody dreams of a supercar to brake and corner to the max I just think a offroad truck could climb in a straight line to the top like on a staircase, a good example comes to mind that all can access in Commando

Isn't the SVT the best offroad truck? What other production truck can do better? I don't care what you can do with mods. I can make a Golf beat the shit out of a Veyron with mods, but that doesn't make the Golf a better car. And anyways, a travel kit on a stock F150 would make it rubbish where you actually use the thing - on the road. The Raptor, as MT said, is actually really good on the road.

broLAXgoalie, The ford raptor did complete the Baja 1000 fully stock in a 5.4L V8 and still managed to place 3rd Later down the road they came out with 6.2L V8 towards the end of 2010. The Baja race isn't just about how fast you can drive. They have Volkswagen Beetles run and complete the Baja it takes them forever to do it but the vehicles are not modified at all they just hop in and go AND YES I know its a different class.

1 you guys are idiots for comparing a 800hp trophy truck custom built for the Baja to 2 vehicles with about half the HP as your vehicle. 2 a stock ford raptor has completed and placed in the Baja with only 411 hp and less than half of the travel of your truck. 3. why are you comparing 1/4 times with a ford mustang granted it has 444hp. it doesn't weigh any where near what your Baja truck does or is built to do. 4. over all theory someone just wanted to toot there own horn and feel special.

lol toyota has more fast cars than any american manufacturer?? Um OK... I have an 89 Supra sitting outside which with the stock motor did 0-60 in about 10 seconds.. that's about 2 seconds faster than my bone stock 4 banger chevy cruze. The AE-86, that wasn't that fast either, just handled well. The MK4 supra was fast, but handled like a boat, because it was one. The gt-86/fr-s is a pile of shit. The LFA is a very well engineered car, but not that fast for what it costs. Stop with your bullshit

Toyota's "racing history" is fed by aftermarket parts, not factory. Toyota's fastest car (LFA) is put to shame by a 7 year old super car. You also forget that there are multiple Mustangs. No Toyota is faster than the Cobra Jet. Now what do they have to beat a GT500 or Super Snake? That's right, nothing. The only "fast" car you listed was the Supra. All of the others are balls slow. Even Toyota's trucks are years behind.

Actually 305 cubic engines were allowed. The same 5.0 engine in the Boss 302 (the only one with 444hp) only makes a piddly 380 lb ft of torque. The LS7 is massively under powered for what it COULD do, but stock from the factory floor it's at 505 hp and 470 lb ft of torque. Don't forget the bottom of the 5.0 hp rating is 360 hp. No 5.0 comes with 400 lb ft of torque either. ALL 6.2L GM engines have more than 400 hp and more than 400 lb ft of torque, even the trucks.

The guy who built the first raptor built it the same way the raptor is today that you can go buy. this is what he told interviewers... "Luckily the SVT team at Ford was able to help and get as many parts off the upcoming Raptor production truck as possible." notice the words UPCOMING RAPTOR. meaning the parts that will be on the ford raptor thats on the market were givin to him BEFORE the raptor came out. the normal stock parts out of the factory. dont talk shit if you dont know facts.

Nah, the difference between a small block and big block is in the casting. Put, for example, a mopar 340 small block next to a mopar 440 big block and look at the difference in size. Big blocks are the most brutal hunks of iron ever to go inside any engine bay in automotive history IMO. You can increase the bore diameter and piston travel length of a small block. That doesn't make it a big block, although it has the potential to make more power/torque than alot of big blocks out there...

Well if you buy an F150 Raptor to go trackracing or dragracing, there's something wrong with you... The Raptor could follow that Baja truck wherever it goes, at 3/4 of the pace. And no other production car ever made could do that. In that sence, it's the fastest car in the world. So no, 43k isn't much when you see it like that. If I wanted one, I'd have to pay over $300.000 to get it imported and taxed...

Them SVT Raptors are quite pricey for only having 411hp and 434tq at $43,000. I know a couple people that test drove the shit out of them and they were not impressed with what $43,000 gives you. The truck seems more hypt up than what it really is. Motor Trend and some others din't give it a great review either. For that kind of money you can build a better truck out of a stock F-150 4X4 with a 5.4

Well I agree they should have shown the raptors numbers on the road coarse and they should have taken the raptor off road with the Trophy truck to show the huge difference in some desert running as well. Obviously the Boss would have to sit that one out. lol all in all interesting Video, gotta love those trucks, awesome, power and speed in seriously tough off road conditions, they take a pounding like non other. That truck was built so well, it actually looked better with the body off the truck.

So what was the lap time of the Raptor??? S, L, O, & W are letters. BTW, I sure as hell hope the hand-built, 800 horsepower RACE truck is faster than the FACTORY BUILT 400 horsepower truck. I have a sneaky suspicion the lap times between the 2 aren't very far apart - had they shown the Raptors 1:55-1:57 lap time (my guess) it would have somewhat invalidated the trophy trucks on-road abilities and the video's purpose. If you're gonna show numbers, show all the numbers, otherwise what's the point?

Great handling and Ford Mustang are not two concepts that I would associate together, even with the Boss 302 badge. Regardless of the merits of the Boss 302 I still feel it did not belong in the comparison since it wasn't a AWD/4WD. Race the TT on the drag strip against the Hemi Grand Cherokee. The Raptor on the race course and then finally, race the TT on a true desert course versus a Bowler Nemesis. That is what I would like to see.

"small block" It's not a production engine. THe biggest big 3 manufactured "small block" Is the LSx tall deck and it can go out to 511. The Largest BB in production that I know of is GMPPs 572. Now of you forgo those and go with a Merlin Superblock (which does top out around 800CI) or World Industries (I know they have a bigger one, I don't know the limits for it) you can get "big blocks" that spit out over 1000 CI of displacement.

You don't know what you are talking about. Less un-sprung weight, you can put more power down in the corners and on corner exit. IRS pulls more Gs in the corners, unless it was some bias test done to show why they used suspension from a horse cart. The falcon is faster around a track than a mustang by a lot. I have driven a Boss 302 and sucked balls compared to the falcon. There is a reason why when you go to a race track only vintage cars run live axle, well in good countries.

He is kinda right.... The mustang has live axle ffs.... I don't understand america, with all their push rods and live axle. Ford Australia make a Ford Falcon with the same engine as the ford mustang. It kills the mustang around a track with its far superior IRS suspension. The only reason Ford don't put the suspension from the falcon in to the mustang is because america has a stiffy over live axle fail. The best part is the i6 turbo version of the Falcon makes way more power than the V8 too.

It is interesting that you bring up that video about the BOSS beating the M3 by a few seconds. If you Google that issue you'll find that the controversy there is again tires. They ran racing tires on the BOSS and I am assuming regular stock tires on the M3. Plus they ran them different days. Not really a straight comparison. Now don't get me wrong for the money Ford beats them all; however, had they put even semi sticky street or track tires on that truck the results might have been different.

The truck has an independent suspension made to swallow 3 ft ditches going 90+ mph = body roll out the ass. and yes the mustang IS made for corners.. The Boss 302 Laguna Seca proceeded to rip off a hot lap of the H-ring's short course in one minute and 13.2 seconds which was two-tenths faster than the Audi R8 4.2 quattro, three-tenths faster than the Ferrari California and the Aston Martin DBS, and a whole second faster than the M3 coupe with Competition Package... So yeah.. He is Serious

This reporting is bogus. The guy said the BOSS is made for these corners....HA HA. Is he serious? A mustang made for corners.....with the live rear axle. I don't think so. I would bet that if you put street racing tires on that truck it would have wasted that mustang. The truck has more HP and a racing independent suspension. The only think holding it back from beating the BOSS were the tires not the weight.

well you may be right, but you would have to tune the hell out of the raptor, the potential is there for a real bad ass baja runner, but to put it in the same league as the trophy truck? not seeing how it'll beat it. i mean, the trophy truck is lighter, and that is a hell of an advantage, and it could go a lot faster on the rough because of teh custom chassis

actually the trophy truck is not tuned, tuning means taking a existing vehicle and turn up it's performance, the trophy truck was built from scratch, it's purpose built from the ground up. and the raptor may be the best road legal truck ever, but it can't hold a candle to the trophy truck in a head to head race.

Holy shit! I am seriously blown away to learn that my Dakota R/T is almost a full second faster than a Ford Raptor. I always just assumed the Ford was faster, if someone had pulled up next to me in one, I'd have written it off as a loss from the beginning. Well, I guess I need to go out and find me someone with a new 6.2L Ford!

BIG THANKS for this comparison, very interesting to see a trophy truck out of natural habitat. Say and show more technical details, gearbox, valve body, fuel delivery, steering rack, rear links geometry. This is the car in which the driver has the most impact, as driving styles can make big differences in car comportament.

I don't know if some of you folks out there are aware of this but the BAJA Race and Racers aren't famous because its done on a traditional race track or because they can run the 1/4 in 13 sec and some change. its famous because its one of the most grueling courses in the world for OFF ROAD RACING. Not only on the vehicles but the drivers as well.

The whole point of the debate was they are stupid for comparing a BAJA TROPHY TRUCK with 800hp pretty much double of either vehicle on the a race track environment and then bragging about how they can smoke a stock truck and run aprox. a second slower than a mustang on a 1/4 mile. or take it out to a race track and run it.

Wow, that Trophy Truck is seriously quick considering it only has 3 gears (built TH400 transmission -- 1.95:1, 1.34:1, and 1.00:1), massive 40" tires, and a 4.71:1 final drive. To put it into perspective, the Mustang has 6 gears (TR-6060 transmission -- 3.66:1, 2.43:1, 1.69:1, 1.32:1, 1.00:1, and 0.65:1), 27" tires, and a 3.73:1 final drive.

It seats 4 people, has a/c, air bags, and all the other amenities new car buyers look for when deciding over the competitors, and has to pass safety testing. Don't blame the manufacturers, blame the masses that would rather buy a heavy, gadget packed car than a more lean, and therefore faster, car. Ford and the others just makes what more people will buy.

Lol Ford engine technology? You mean, direct injection, domed pistons for higher compression ratios, and turbos? don't get me wrong, I love Fords. But their "new technology" is nothing new. It's been around for years, they're just the first ones to figure out that along with more power, comes more fuel economy, if done correctly. And they used that to their advantage

comparing an 800 hp purpose built trophy truck to a stock svt raptor is fucking stupid. only idiots would think the raptor might have had a chance. the raptor has half the power. and the boss should be running mid 11s on the drag idk what the fuck made it so slow but a stock 03 04 cobra runs faster than the boss did in this video.

Yes at that track. I have run hundreds of laps. My 04 cobra at 420rwhp on street tires i was running 142's. I don't know any stock GT500's that run that slow. Taking it easy or not, they are there to show potential buyer what the cars can do. That car with a decent driver should be in the high 1.30's. Now for the Baja truck he was hauling ass.

Yeah, it'd be far away very soon. I didn't say it was a trophy truck, just the closest thing you can get in production car form. And I'd just like to say that around the Top Gear (UK) track, if you compare the Baja truck to an F1 car, at around 3/4 of the pace of the F1 car (+/- a sec or 2), you find a Corvette ZR1. Just to put it into perspective.

Mustang designed for corners... LOL Awesome cars -the old ones at least- but not for beeing quick on a racetrack. And what is that 4x4 driver doing going off the throttle in mid-corner? Trying to make it drift to look cool? He's for sure not aiming for fast lap times. But i want to see more 4x4 trucks on racetracks!

I wonder why every single car in the top 10 best time attack cars run IRS.... I also wonder why my uncle who has a space frame RX7 1000WHP 20B time attack car that cost him over $300,000 to build also runs IRS... They would obviously be way faster if they took a page out of Americas book and used some live axle from the 1970s.

You pretty-much nailed it. The tall deck has a taller deck height allowing for a longer stroke. the LSX and LSX-A blocks are offered by GMPP, however are not used in production engines. They can use almost every part ever offered on the Gen 4 small blocks (LS-LQ series) As for bore the LSX series blocks are limited to 4.25 inches (for a All motor effort) acording to GMPP.

Is the "tall deck" you mention something with a longer stroke to increase the cubes, or is it completely different from the production LS block? Not sure exactly, but I think the production SB maxes out the bore diameter between 4 and 4.5 inches, so you would have to increase the stroke or use an entirely different casting for the block, right?
