Bajadasaurus | What Did This Dinosaur Use Its Cretaceous Mohawk For?

The largest animals to ever walk the face of the planet were the sauropod dinosaurs. Known for their long necks and enormous sizes, the sauropods lasted from the late triassic to the late cretaceous. They’re one of the longest-lived groups of non-avian dinosaurs. It should therefore come as no surprise that some groups diverged from the generic body plan of super long neck, super long tail, tiny head, and robust body. One of these cringy influencers sported a mohawk of forward pointing spines erupting from a short neck. Meet Bajadasaurus.

Man, as a kid I was obsessed with dinos. As a 19 year old, that obsession still remains but now I have an interest for all animals and creatures of history. Absolutely fascinating. It's wild to know that no matter how far we come with research there will always be things we will never know, possibly major things as well as minor, and it's so interesting to learn all the possibilities and ideas of what once was.

Don’t ever lose that curiosity and love of learning. Trust me, that very passion has served me well throughout my life. Countless hours of total bliss in learning about this world. Complete fulfillment and always more to learn!! Countless people Ive been able to aid throughout my lifetime and countless animals assisted in their own unique journeys on this earth!! So many life’s saved . So many aided in their understandings of this Little Rock we live on. And I WOULDN’T change a damned thing. How lucky we are! Never stop learning! I believe in you!! (Lots of love from a total stranger. I’m AJ, btw. Not Robert. I’m the wife that’s too lazy to sign into her own account for FOUR YEARS NOW. Hahaha. Don’t worry. He gets it. And I have his permission. @@KFrost-fx7dt I assume you are referring to "annoy the shit out of you" and "metric crap-ton". First, I wanna say: there's no way avoiding this, anyways, sadly. I noticed it is not trying to protect kids from bad influences that helps, but giving them the right/proper perspective on them. They will come across them sooner or later, anyways, so better help them to have the right mindset to deal with them properly. Willfully exposing them I wouldn't suggest either, though. Secondly, why is it even called adult-language? Why not call it gutter talk or bum talk? Calling it that way makes it even more appealing to kids. They all wanna be grownups or at least act like them. Personally, I find it unnecessary, but I don't have a big problem with it.

It'll be interesting to look back on Amargasaurus and bajarasaurus when we have a more complete picture of these dinosaurs as a group, it wouldn't shock me if it turns out that the Amargasaurus genus just ends up having a lot of variability in how the neck spines look between species, or even individuals as like, a signalling thing.
@EDGEscience

Unlike Bajadasaurus, Amargasaurus is a lot more complete. So the arrangement of the spines in Amargasaurus is confirmed. That doesn't rule out differences in other specimens, may they ever be found.

What a brilliant adaptation, I could see that preventing a theropod from biting down on your neck. Evolutionary arms races are so fascinating, like specifically in cases like these where the adaptations seem to be driven by interaction with another species/niche. I wonder what happened with the predators in response?

Bases on what paleontologists have said about defensive features on animals like Triceratops, there's a good chance that the spins on the Bajadasaurus were for display (sexual and/or species identification) first and defense second.
@Andrey.Ivanov
@Andrey.Ivanov 3 года назад
It's mostly likely both in my opinion. I don't know which would be their primal and the secondary purpose but base on the available date they seem pretty well suited for defense. The fact that they appear to have been covered with keratin and the way they are positioned relative to the posture to the neck when animal is feeding on low vegetation would clearly play a role in protecting the animal a large predator who would normally aim for the neck. At the same time individuals with longer spines probably would have been viewed are more healthy and stronger by potential partners. If I have to guess the spines probably appeared first as a display structure but then were shaped and modified to better protect the animals from predatory attacks. But as usual we need more material to find out exactly

I reckon they were used in group defense rather than as a weapon. In groups, multiple Bajadasaurus could arrange themselves into a circle - their necks pointing outwards with spines in all directions, thus protecting every individual from danger as if the whole group were a big sea urchin or something... I doubt any large predators would want to take on a group of Bajadasaurus like that. Maybe many ceratopsians did something similar?

I've long suspected that the neck spines of bajadasaurus and amargasaurus used them in combat with members of their own species kind of like deer with their antlers and defence against attacking predators perhaps not to attack the predators with but rather a sort of bluf with a herd standing their ground facing the neck spines towards the attackers perhaps shaking their necks slightly .

We know that protofeathers evolved early in dinosaur evolution, likely early in archosaur evolution, so the spines simply being for display seems unlikely to me: protofeathers do this and with less energy requirements. Whenever an animal has bony tissue coming out of its body in this fashion it is typically covered in keratin, we see this in deer and many other modern mammals. We speculated this with stegosaurus and have since confirmed it. I would argue that this is convergence evolution with the likes of tuojiangosaurus and other stegosaurus cousins. These spines likely had sharp keratin edges to protect the animals vertebrate from attacks coming from above [large theropoda]. Most sauropods did not need this because most sauropods eclipsed their theropoda locals, but bajadasaurus was not very large for a theropoda, and it lived along side some massive allosaurids. Allosaurids did not have a crushing bite but rather sharp claws with slicing teeth. Biting carnivores need to be able to get their jaw into their prey to inflict damage, like chubby ankylosaurs, this issue is resolved by the sauropods chubby body, but its neck was not too thick for allosaurids to bite into, this problem is solved with the spines, which are above, the only place a tall theropoda can attack from. From the Jurassic to the cretaceous most large herbivores show adaptations to surviving attacks from above, from triceratops frill to stegosaurus plates.

The “defense against attack from above” hypothesis has been shown to be unfounded. The frills of ceratopsians in particular were horrible for this purpose as they had huge holes in them and many weren’t even big enough to provide much of a defense; remember most theropods could crunch through bone.

@@EDGEscience ceratopcians are a very diverse clade, some of the smaller species only needed to bite so had no need for a frill. Triceratops had a 3 inch thick frill made of solid bone covered in keratin. That is most definitely for protection, vestigial ornaments are not this strong and energy consuming. Like with turtle shells: defense does not always hold up.

@@EDGEscience fyi most theropods could NOT crush through bones, most had no need for this. Animals like allosaurids were big enough to swallow most ornithischian bone hole (unlike hyenas, for example). Dromeosaurids, allosaurids etc had slicing teeth and were incapable of crushing large bones with their bite. Only sauropod bones couldn't be swallowed but they were hollow so of no nutritional value so they had no need of a crushing hyena like bite. only a few tyranosaurids evolved this capability. In response, their large ceratopcian neighbors evolved a thicker frill. Let's stick to triceratops who lived along side trex. 3" thick frill covered in keratin, with sharpened edges. All of this for display? 🤔🧐

The theropods that were big enough to prey on ceratopsians and lived with them were tyrannosaurs, which are fully equipped to crunch through bone. The only ceratopsian with a frill that could be used for defense was Triceratops since it was solid and without holes. All others were more likely for any other use.

@@EDGEscience trex has the strongest bite of any theropoda ever by far. The frill did not have to be strong against bite force for most other ceratopcians in order to protect them. Most large theropoda, like allosaurids, did not have a strong bite, but rather a wide gape with violent force and their claw. Most ceratopcians did not need a thick frill to survive an attack and bite back. Like stegosaurus sharp plates, I am sure the sauropod in this video used their sharp top edge as protection against allosaurids violent wide gape bite
