There is a butter trick I saw. Take a drinking glass, like a draft beer glass. Boil some water and pour into glass. Let it sit a minute. Dump out the water and flip the glass upside down over a stick of butter with the wrapper still on. Literally 2 minutes or less the butter is perfectly soft.

I know it's gross and all but don't fret about the baby getting into dirty stuff. That is like an instinct built into us that helps our bodies to build our immune system. It's actually a good thing. They say that's why babies put everything in their mouths.
