Balachaung| Burmese Fried Dried Fish| ငါးခြောက်ဘာလချောင်ကြော်

Dried shrimp/ fish are commonly used in Asian food. There are many dishes are made with dried shrimp and fish in various recipe across the Asian countries. In Malaysia and Singapore cuisine, sambal sauce which is made with dried anchovies is served with Nasi Lemark, carrot cakes etc. If you like the flavour of sambal sauce then you might also like the relish dish that I am gonna share in this Vlog.
In Burma, we call it as “Balachaung” which is commonly made with dried shrimps. “Balachaung” is a relish dish made with fried onion, garlic and red chilies and it is served as a side dish with Briyani, Butter rice in Burma and cooked plain rice or sandwich filling.
Dried fish can also be substituted in the place of dried shrimps or vice versa. In original recipe, dried fish are cooked in boiling water and pounded in mortal and pestle. But in easier way, I am gonna use instant dried fish, which is ready to use. In order to make instant dried fish soft and tender, I chose to steam them but it can also be soaked in warm water to soften. Then, debone the fish well before pounding or grinding as the remaining bones in meat will be crushed.
