The Swedish SAV 20.12.48 is seen as one of the most blatantly overpowered premium tanks in War Thunder. It can launch one extremely potent APHE round every 1.2 seconds, so what if we tried to balance it by only using HE?

@icezinho_ Honestly Sweden has the most busted vehicles in the game, CV90105, Strv 122, USH, Ikv 91, SAV, VIDAR and ItPsV are all undertiered. Even the VEAK 40 is lower BR than the M247 despite being better in every practical way

0:55 Bofors really wanted to get into the vehicle market so they cut the barrel off one of their naval aa guns and built a fast casemate around it. Meant to be an assault gun but was rejected from service for being expensive.

It was part of the IKV (Infanteri kanonvagns) line of thinking, where it was supposed to deliver HE to support infantry operations, so the same as the IKV 91

@@ozan1234561how much armor does the average cold war apc/ifv have? even modern ones are thin, because protection from small arms protects you from 99% of your targets, and anything with anti-tank weaponry will penetrate you no matter what if you're lighter than a main battle tank

I regretted not getting it when it was available last year so I snagged it for Sweden Day or whatever. Absolutely no regrets. The ikv103 used to be my go to “get kills with a TD” but this thing is savage. Just watch out for those KV-1s 😂

1:30 I always bring some HE in the SAV 20.12 because you lack a machinegun for dealing with trucks, the APHE overpens and your reload is just 1 second to switch rounds.

I haven’t taken it to top tier, mostly because I can’t but in 5.3 it can vaporize Shermans, Tigers, Panthers, whatever. I managed to smack a Tiger from over a kilometer once, albeit in Arcade.

@user-dk6mh8zo1l Anything with a cupola will get vaporized. You have to kinda aim carefully, tho because most things don't have cupolas at top teir, but most tanks have thin sloped armor(M1 Abrams)

Yes I know that 'compartments' is a ships thing in this game, but many vehicles seem to also get it (which makes sense on some of the modern stuff specifically designed like that).

Heya spook! I think an interesting video would be on the TKX(p), the reason I say this, is because the TKX(p) is effectively the same as the TKX, but without some of the additional rolled armor (and just Dm33). What I enjoy to do in the TKX(p) is considering it has pneumatic suspension, with your dozer you can make some pretty fun hull down positions.

Attempt 4 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.

A good trick that's often forgotten about when using HE, you can aim directly under the tanks that way you easily destroy them, especially for the heavy ones

The main reason the SAV looks so different to other Swedish vehicles is that while most Swedish tanks were designed by Landsverk, the SAV prototype was entirely made by Bofors, and it was built around the autoloading cannon (which comes from a ship design). Hence the unusual appearance.

From my research (also just a google search) it was a private venture by Bofors to make a new gun, and they built the 20.12.48 as a test bed and showcase to displays the gun ability, so it didn't really have or need a use.

As the name suggests it's an assault gun, intended to provide direct fire support to infantry and some anti-tankgun capability (favoring speed over protection). However, no military bought it and it didn't get past the prototype stage.

I pray that you get better and when you have the time you should definitely try the domestic Italian casemate tank destroyers (m41, m42, m43) they are so fun. They have some of the best guns in tier imo especially the first one having a 75mm gun with APCBC at 2.0 and 2.3. All of them aren’t open top and they have decent speed and turret flexibility.

From what I can tell there are two factors for HE penetration. HE filler determined the „blast“ penetration while shell weight influences how the penetration reduction rate at range. A light round can have 30mm of pen but might struggle to penetrate adjacent plates to the impact which are only 10-15mm.

SAV stands for Stormartillerivagn, with is essentially Swedish for StuG... it is an assault gun... a 120 mm, auto-loading, assault gun. Think of it as the fever dream that later became the Strv 103: something that hides and lurks, then - as you blunder into range - pops up to give you a devastating flurry of hard blows that bloodies your nose, before pulling back to wait for you to come get some more.

If you think this is ridiculous, Bofors has a brochure from 1945 with a vehicle drawing similar in size to the Tiger II, with an automatic 10.5cm 16.5kg 900m/s gun with a 1 second reload time. It also has a turret and has elevation angles of -10/+40, with 2 20mm guns for both cupolas at the back. If only we let Sweden cook...

Day 44 You should play a tank with hydropneumatic suspension (recommend the MBT-70) But the catch is you have to drop the suspension as low as it can go for the whole match.

Fun fact. The HE shell for this thing is called Spgr m/50Z. The Z means its a proxy fuse shell. I don't think it actually had that irl, gaijin simply used naval 120mm shells since the guns were related and theres little info about the actual ammo (might have been HEAT). Buuuuuuuuuut if they're gonna give it the m/50Z then how about actually giving it proxy. Make it 4.0 or something to compensate. Why should planes be safe from the mosnter?

The vehicle was meant for infantry support, just like the other vehicles of the Ikv designation (infanteriekanonenvagn = (roughly) infantry gun carriage). The Swedish designs often had low armor and good gun depression values due to the very hilly landscape and defensive doctrine relying on hit and run and ambush tactics.

This is one of those tanks which turns from OP to warcrime when you squad with the right country: -German tanks you can hit anywhere to 1 shot kill -Shermans can be slightly bouncy -T-34 and KV-1 bounce a lot

I always figured out to be an ambush TD, a 120mm with a quick reload, dug into prepared camouflaged fortification in a forest environ. It would have been a nightmare in thr 1950s.

Day 26 of asking you to play the Challenger 2 Black Knight Spook, the hard kill APS can even intercept aircraft munitions which will help with your CAS issue! You may also want to take some HESH, as they have improved its consistency against single layer homogeneous armour since the last update.

Now imagine if they added the Emil, also known as the kranvagn, it would have had a 150mm cannon with 110mm heatfsds rounds, a unique shell which I would presume was designed to provide the pen of a heat shell and the velocity and accuracy of an apfsds round on a 2 second reload time, as well as frontal armour equal to a minimum of about 300mm equivalent everywhere on the front AND it was to have a 60kmh top speed, I want it.
