The National Wildlife Federation works to defend and strengthen the Endangered Species Act and other core wildlife conservation laws. This work includes advocating for increased funding, working against measures that would weaken the law, and helping state and federal agencies implement the law.
The Endangered Species Act is a foundational environmental law that helps wildlife managers identify species at imminent risk of extinction and work with communities, states, and individuals to save plants and wildlife from disappearing forever. Although this foundational law has been an effective emergency room for species, it is not and should not be the only line of defense. State conservation laws, other federal conservation measures, and state, territorial, and Tribal wildlife grants and programs complement help the ESA and bolster species’ recovery and conservation. We need to do more to shore up the other facets of wildlife conservation - including passing the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act - because the ESA is not the only tool available to help wild plants and animals thrive.
