Out at a customers home in Delaware County, Pennsylvania to remove a D. maculata nest from under an eave. No poisons or pesticides were used. No stings and the job went without a hitch.
This species tends to fly fairly high (i.e., toward one's head) but tend not to cling as yellow jackets (ground-nesting species of Vespula) and bumble bees often do. If one is wearing appropriate protective clothing, then being stung by this baldfaced hornets is unlikely although, as Chris said in the video, they often spray venom which has a noticeable odor (to me it smells a bit like vinegar but not quite).
@Adam Vesely I once saw a nest of the baldfaced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) that was TOUCHING the ground, but never one that was actually subterranean. Are you certain you weren't actually looking at another species, such as the "blackjacket" Vespula consobrina, which looks like a smaller version of the baldfaced hornet but is the size of a yellow jacket. The latter species typically nests in the ground.
Once cleaning a back yard I got stung by 8 or 10 bumblebees I Just by accident came up and step on their main entrance to nest and wow like needles on my ankles and knees, but funny thing my knees used to hurt I abuse them when I was young playing soccer and too much gym , after that my knees never hurt again may be there is a cure to bone pain on the poison of these little ones, but in revenge i got so mad that i cover entrance and killed like 40 or 60 of them with my sombrero as soon as they try to get out it was my mistake but a wedding was on schedule for next day I may be saved alots of people to be stung heheheh and my knees like new ones now I have respect for these bumblebees and let them fly they contribute to pollination all over the world
''they're just wasps'', first of all they're hornets, (way worse) and second of all, if you destroy a nest and they come after you, you can be in ALOT of pain.

First I observed their flight pattern from afar. Once I was quite satisfied with most of them inside , I sprayed insect repellant into the hive. Then I retreated about 10 steps to observe. After a while when very few are alive , I sprayed another round into the hive. Finally I smashed the hive. Simplicity won the day
Was helping my grandparents to clean the windows, walked through some brush and felt a sting. Didn’t know what happened until I got stung 4 more times and bolted out of there. Worst part is as I’m sitting there nursing my stings telling my grandpa there’s a nest there, he says I’m over exaggerating and walks in there himself only to get stung by a couple too…I hate wasps

A friend once described using a vacuum to empty a hornets nest. He then thought he would finish them off by spraying some insect killer down the hose as well. Of course when the spray hit the electric motor there was an explosion which released the hornets that were not only angry, but a little high from the poison. Not one of his best days.
I accidentally hit one of those nests with hedge clippers last year. Didn't even know it was in the bush I was trimming. Not only did I get stung multiple times but I also found out that I'm allergic. They like to go right for the face. Seeing this video makes me very happy. Keep taking them out!
Two summers ago I had a nest similar to this with what I believe were bald faced hornet or something very similar. They were black with white on their heads. The nest was up on the corner of my garage. Had to go past it twice a day. We all respected one another and had no issues ever. They were not aggressive when I was near. I left them alone and they left me alone. They got used to the garage door going up and down. I suppose they got used to me? I certainly watched and paid attention whenever I had to be near the nest. Once it got cold enough (Michigan) and I no longer saw any of them, I took the nest down all in one piece. I still have it. It’s beautiful.
Had something pretty similar happen. Had a nest outside of my window (second floor). Convinced my parents not to take it down. Nest got about basketball sized before they all perished in fall. Sadly couldn't get the nest down in time, but maybe they'll nest there again. They were absolutely beautiful specimens, and they never stung anyone. They were too high up to care if people were nearby as they are only aggressive towards things that are within 3 feet of their nests

Found a hornet nest in a pile of leaves in the corner of a deck. Just happened to have my gas powered leaf vac...took the bag off and they went to 2-stroke chop town. VERY agressive...got stung a few times. Worth it.
TRUE FLORIDA MAN STORY: I pushed a lawn mower over a yellow jacket nest (by accident). I was immediately attacked, but fortunately heavily clothed and had gloves on, which i used to rake the wasps off my clothes. By the time I stopped running, I could hear the mower in the distance still running...over the nests. Infuriated by the disturbance of my grass cutting solitude, and the slow rate the mower was grinding up the wasps, I went home and came back with rope, generator, 20 feet of PVC, and a shop vac. Tossed an end of the rope on the mower and pulled it away. Placed one end of the PVC (pipe) at the nest opening, connected other end to shop vac with duct tape, cranked up the generator and turned on the vac. My turn b!tches! I then sat down in my truck and cracked open a 6 pack of beer. By the time the beer was done, that vac had done its job and was seriously HEAVY. The vac was humming and gazillions of yellow jackets were still in there, alive, so I let it sit overnight, and the next day in the sizzling Florida Man sun, and the next night. On the 3rd day, all humming had stopped and I realized it was time to clean the vac. Bravely, I popped it open, and was instantly seized by a death defying stench that pierced the gates of hell. GAWD! THAT STINKS, BAD! On day 4, I placed the vac on the street corner couple of blocks from my house, with a sign that said, "Free. Great for bees!." As the sun set on that day, from my porch, I heard a shriek, followed by the sound of emergency vehicles. Not wanting to be pulled into the journey of my follies, I walked inside, and opened another 6 pack. END OF FLORIDA MAN STORY

It's kinda like catching a skunk, trapping it inside a box and then leaving that box at someone's doorstep with "free pets, good for keeping intruders away" written on it
We had one of these on the side of our house. A mud-nest the size of a large human head appeared within a few days! The exterminator waited until around dark, so they would be less active. He knocked the nest down with a VERY long pole, before trying to get rid of them. (The best had been too high to reach safely with our uneven ground.) He told me that they would trace back any spray streams and attack the hand, so he had to be extra careful. But he didn't suck them away. (At the time, I didn't even know that was an option.) Instead, he just let them fly off. They showed up a week later in a rabbit hole in my back yard. The dog suddenly didn't want to pee where she tended to go. To get rid of them, I first tried spraying the hole with water, but sure enough... They traced back the long stream to my hand. That experiment was short-lived! So I stood far away, turned on my garden house, and locked the spray nozzle-gun to "stream." Then I turned it off at the wall, and dropped the dry/inactive nozzle-gun into the hole, point down. When I turned the water on at the wall again, the hole quickly filled with water. I watched them repeatedly attacking the nozzle-gun, as if it could be stung. I was lucky that wasn't my hand! It took a few days of doing this a few times a day, but they eventually left.
Absolutely superb job guys, got to hand it to you. I remember back in '06 my pops started getting into pest control because of that classic movie Over the Hedge with Bruce Willis and Avril Lavigne. But videos like this make me proud of my pops's decision to blaze a new trail in life. Although his career hasn't always gone the way he would have liked it to go, what with having to work long hours sometimes just to put food on the table when I was only around 4 years of age, he is the happiest he's ever been in life. Thank you to all the proud men and women in pest control and the ones who love them.

The best method I have found is to spray the nest at night with either diesel or kerosene, it will kill them immediately and they won't build again in the same place due to the oil reside.
I used to use a similar method to kill nests to earn money as a kid. I would use an airtight, transparent, plastic bag (big enough to cover the nest), some cotton balls and some petrol/diesel, then soaked the cotton balls in fuel, then just pinned/duct taped the bag over the nest and just chilled for 10-15 minutes, then just peeled the nest off the wall. All the wasps/hornets would be dead from the fumes. I used to get about £5 to £10 for nests ranging from fist size, right up to basketball size - never wore a suit, because I didn't have one! Biggest nest I ever took down was the size of a sack of potatoes and was hanging from an attic beam of a building that was being refurbished. It paid £25, so I came back at 2am when they were sleeping and carefully bagged the nest whilst precariously balancing between two beams. Ahh, childhood.
As a kid I was attacked by hornets. We were playing football, and the receiver missed the ball. The ball hit a nest on the side of an old tool shed. They sent ME to retrieve the ball. The guys said I ran faster than Jesse Owens with a swarm following me. I was teased for a loooong time. I was called the Elephant Man until the swelling went down. Still haunts me.
Baseball was my story. Was about 7 years old. Ran faster than a cheetah when 1st one stung me in back of head. I don't think anymore caught up with me before I got in the house 😢😂

I myself used the technique of my vacuum cleaner at the entrance of the nest: An hour to let him work alone to go get my coffee, a shot of insecticide in the bag, trash and coffee. A daunting job. . .
Farmers I grew up around waited til twilight, got a small trash can with a tight lid , a big bucket of soapy water, a pole saw and a long cloth bag with pull strings on a pole with a special hoop. Dislodge the nest, it falls in the bag, close the bag, put it into the can, pore the water over it, shut the lid. No torches, no ladders, no stings/bites, no ointment, no ice packs and no angry cows.
TJJohnson you haven't had my exsperence of when I walked out side my house and was chatting to a friend and a wasp flew onto my glasses and I stood there staring at it as it stared at me. My friend freaked out then afterward laughed. It then flew off. Luckily I did not get stung.

There is a fellow who would put dry ice in the vacuum containment compartment. The dry ice renders the wasps dormant and the CO2 starves them of oxygen. He then sells the carcasses to a medical laboratory that extracts the venom to make anti-venom for people who are allergic. Just something to think about brother, you could make a little extra money and you’d be helping a lot of people.

Although $100 is a bit pricey for an op like this, a hornet nest removal is absolutely VITAL, especially for people with animals and children, or people who throw plenty of events outside. And even when an op that's only dealing with a phase 2 hornet nest is a little overpriced, do not EVER attempt to go through with such a relatively risky op by yourself when u have no experience. And in the end, you should be proud of the work that you've done in making people's lives safer. Thank you so much for what you do. Keep up the good work.

I think it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, and depends mostly on where in the country you are operating. In many parts of the country that may be considered cheap.
Uh no, 100 is perfect for this kind of job, if you don't wanna pay, you do it and see what it's like with these abominations swarming you and stinging you until your face is swelled up to the size of a watermelon. Hell I'd pay more if I had to. Wasps are horrible creatures.
What happened when you shut the vacuum off? Did the wasps find themselves escaping through the hose? And how did you empty the vacuum without getting stung?

+BeepBeep ImAJeep it's not nearly the same thing. In this situation, there is only one threat which are the wasps' stingers. The beekeeper suit protects the user from virtually any possible stings. There aren't really any other determining factors that would increase the risk of being stung if the suit is in serviceable condition.
I once had a huge nest under my carport just off to the side and 10' off the ground where I used a log splitter just about all summer and never seen it behind a joist or was bothered by them. Guess they were used to the noise and smoke.I did get scared when I saw where they were the whole time.
A good and excellent job to get rid of the brown wasps. Finally, you can spray the insecticide in the broom hole to eliminate them all. There is another type of wasps, yellow with black stripes that are very dangerous, even attacking the beehive and eliminating it, thank you
Baldface are one of the most agressive, tenatious, toughest hornet species in the world. If you have them, best to just leave them alone and let cold winter temps take care of them. Yeah, they may be back the next summer. Raid spray will not wipe out a nest so don't waste money. A plastic trap made from a V-8 jug will deplete their numbers to a point where they are tolerable. Unless you can reach a nest and have a clean powerful vacuum, don't mess with them. Stihl makes a vacuum/shredder that will destroy the insect population and the paper nest, but this product is expensive. And don't call a beekeeper. I got called once to remove a nest when someone saw my notice to catch bee swarms. I told the guy it would take me a couple hours and that it would cost him 200 bucks. He squawked like a chicken, so I told him an exterminator would cost even more. It took more than two hours, but I finally was paid and swore I'd never do that again. I took my wife out to a nice dinner.
