You mentioned the wolf in sheep's clothing trope. I'd say the Redcaps outside Auntie Ethel's house fulfil that role. If you fail the illusion piercing checks, they are sheep.

Fair, there are some parallels there. Though I was more talking about a specific creature literally called "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing." :) It was a plant-based ambush predator shaped like a tree stump with a small woodland creature (usually a rabbit) perched on top, and when prey got close it would grab it with its prehensile roots and drag it into its hidden mouth. I think it was only ever "officially" in first edition, introduced in the infamous Expedition to Barrier Peaks, then reprinted in one of the later 1e Monster Manuals.

@@RetconRaiderMonster Manual 2 It also appeared in appeared in the Tome of Horrors (2002) from Necromancer Games.and in Paizos book Misfit Monsters Redeemed and Bestiary 3 , In the Pathfinder version, the animal is an animated corpse rather than part of the monster.

The shield is part of a rather powerful set. When combined, it gives you quite a power spike that will see you through some upcoming rough patches.

Heh, I actually tried equipping it on Orrik after someone told me there's no penalty for wielding a shield without being proficient. Turns out there's a big penalty, at least if you're a spellcaster. :D

@@RetconRaider Slap everything on Gale or Wyll. The robes, the shield, the staff, the boots if possible if you take the medium armor perk. It allows you to punch above your paygrade in act 2 when things begin to get a bit more series.

@@RetconRaider If you have shields proficiency, you not get any penalties. Humans and half-elfs have shields proficiency, best races in this game for wizards, sorcerers.

Honestly, I do think that's kind of what happened. Like, I've always had the impression that mimics just kind of copy whatever other containers they happen to see lying around. But in this case, they can't really change their mass, so they just ended up becoming larger copies of the tiny chest? :D

They couldn't hit you at all, but the mimics do have an adhesive skin like ability. If they hit you they take the characters weapon into the "chest."

kinda bummed that the mimic encounter doesnt give you the dark souls treatment it touching it and getting critically damaged and grappled.

I suspect we would have had a much rougher start if we hadn't spotted the "trap" on approach, and just tried to open it like a normal chest. :)

@@RetconRaider One of my mates didnt even spot. it only takes 1 perception fail then the cutscene triggers. Also did you have a bug regarding the pathing of climbing up or down of the cliff faces?

Ah, that's a shame. Would have been more fun if they'd let players have a chance of actually touching it before the reveal, thus getting stuck to it and possibly hit in a surprise round. As for buggy climbable surfaces, I'm not sure? Which part are you talking about?

so low skill check to find that adamantine. also why is every roll skill check rounded to 5? why not 12? 9? or did i miss some of those because i dont remember any

Looks like they're using the official D&D 5e difficulty chart for skill checks, which only has difficulties in increments of 5. The chart ranges from "Very Easy" at 5 to "Nearly Impossible" at 30.

@@RetconRaider I am sad to learn of this. As somebody who plays Dwarves the vast majority of the time, I'd have loved a romanceable companion who didn't need to kneel down for smooches.
