Thanks for the guides, great content as always! I'm curious about more Multiclass info now that we know more changes that Larian made vs 5e. For instance, even one level in Wizard lets you scribe any spell you have a SLOT for, not based on Wiz level. This means a completely non-viable build for 5e (like 11Sorc 1 Wiz or 10Sorc 2Wiz) is actually potentially very viable in BG3. I'd love to see more build content exploring more niche stuff like that!
Positioning your party to set up devastating ambushes by ungrouping your party before initiating combat can be so helpful with encounters that allow you to do so. I practiced by reloading the temple encounter just outside the nautilus crash over and over again until I could beat that encounter in 3 turns and it helped me understand the systems so much better that encounters now feel like fun puzzles rather than a punishing slog.
I agree, but in one big fight that didnt work for me, because of a cutscene and then I couldnt control my party outside combat. Not sure if that was a bug or not.
I tried doing this a few times when fighting the "paladin" that was hunting karlach but sometimes when combat would start 1 or 2 of my party members wouldn't be part of the combat sequence and ol boy would just divine smite my 2 man party to death. Was very frustrating
There’s a lot of other ways to gain massive advantages. An example is a blinding fog spell with a grease spell in the same location which doesn’t allow enemies to move out of the fog quickly.
I went out the front gate and got murdered, I had a cast fireball sheet thay I used to kill the big boss and couldn't remember where the underground cavern was to escape lol
@@triston8278 I did the unthinkable to kill them all by using powders, poison, aoe spells, cc, multiple fight attempts, hell it was so fun doing all of that. I also made sure to talk to all the leaders before killing each.
I threw the .... thing.. you get from the caravan shipment into the middle of the courtyard of goblins.. and then sounded the horn to call the three ogres... it was a hilarious fight.
Another thing that helped me was, if you and any of your companions have their turns directly next to one another in the combat order, you can use them in any order that you want.
that was a very useful thing to find out in combat, I agree! Makes decisions so much easier. Especially AOE spells. You can first remove your allies from the AOE range and then only hit the enemies (and then maybe move back with your allies and attack with the others of they have enough movement)
Next to each other, and intertwined (there's a little visual effect where the character's borders wrap together, indicating they have the same initiative and you can do their turns in any order)
Side note during the "Why you're missing your attacks" section. You can absolutely make ranged attacks with a Strength-based character: Keep some lighter weapons with the Thrown property on them. Handaxes, Javelins, and Light Hammers are all Strength weapons that can be thrown. Daggers work, too, and are plentiful.
Im in act 1 and i have the githyaki girl (cant eemember her name rn) using a pike thats enchantment is to return to the owner when thrown and shes such a beast because she can launch that for full damage, use the 2 hand weapon power attacks, and hit up to 3 enemies with it.
@@TylerKadle I've got that one, too. It will eventually replace my bag full of Spiderlings and Intellect Devourers. But not before I get through all the damn Javelins I've picked up.

I'm 30 hours long in BG3 and I still benefit greatly from videos like these so tyvm for taking the time. Being completely new to the D&D and turn based genre in general, this game has proven quite difficult to play well.
I am 50 hours into this game and typical me, I can't commit to one character. I play many hero collector games and I played world of Warcraft for a decade and I'm always struggling with picking just one character to level. I level many, But at least with BG3 I've only got two and instead of being 50 hours deep with one character I'm about 25 hours deep with a paladin and a druid I can't choose between them but this game's pretty good
For sneak attack (rogue feature) set sneak attack in your reactions to ask. And NEVER use the sneak attack button. Just attack and trigger sneak attack. This is because sneak attack can trigger on the first hit (even your offhand dagger). If you use "sneak attack" button in game and miss you loose the sneak attack.
HOLY SHIT, THANK YOU! I was so mad that I missed a sneak attack that made me miss saving that kid from the harpies. I wondered why they didn't have SA work like that, but it does, thank you.
@@aegontargaryen573 At the top right of your Rogue's Hotbar, you should see icons floating outside of it. Those are actions that cost a reaction. You can click on the Sneak Attack buttons, and then you'll get a prompt that lets you customize them. Set them to ask, then you don't have to click the Sneak Attack button to do one, you can do it when you land a successful hit. It makes Rogues so much more consistent in damage.
"If you use "sneak attack" button in game and miss you loose the sneak attack.." ??? I'll assume you mean lose but even then what are you talking about? If you have 2 AP then sure this makes sense but if you only have 1 AP then it doesn't matter if you miss or not, it recharges every turn
I got to my first fight and had no idea what to do. So I opened up my RU-vid feed, and here this video was. Incredible timing. I can't even find the button to register the bonus attacks 😂 Thanks for the tips!
Most classes don't get bonus actions until you gain some levels. That is why in the actual tabletop game, some groups like starting at level 3 or so, because level 1-2 are "very basic".
@@BennyR92the button "T" and your ability to read is the tutorial. 😉 But yes i missed a proper tutorial too as i started playing, especially because i never played any D&D game before.
On the task bar where your abilities are are some shapes which can be used to filter you abilities by whether they are actions, bonus actions or reactions (like opportunity attack or counterspell). Also look for the passives button. Hope that helps.
This is a must watch for any beginner like myself. I’m at the library finishing up some work while the game is downloading at home. I’m beyond stoked to jump in the world.
As far as gaining advantage, you can put your group into turn-based before combat to get in close as well and ungroup them to position them individually before combat. This is really important in some preset battles and you get some heads up when getting close because you can usually hear them talking or get a message like 'there seems to be some commotion ahead' or somesuch. That should be your cue to look ahead and see how the terrain is and make a rough plan on how to approach. If there is high ground, approach from that direction if possible, if you blunder in through a gully or valley chokepoint, don't cry when you find yourself surrounded.
0:14 I was feeling pretty good about how that encounter went for me, coming from the other door way. Then I see you effectively take out EVERYONE with that one shot; its fascinating the differences that can arise in the experience of play depending on the choices you make. That's something you don't get to see when playing D&D at the table
Furthermore, after doing that, I shut the door, just before the enemy turn. That way any surviving mobs have to cross the flames to open the door and ranged ones cannot fire through a closed door. Typically, when they opened the door they kept running into a corner in the room without attacking, so I could attack them and reclose the door . Rinse and repeat.
Great video! Helped a lot. During the goblin castle encounter, when your main character is separated and alone with the goblin priest, I chose dialogue options which led to a fight. I lock picked the door with my outside characters and led them inside the room. I had my characters jump onto the upper platform and out of reach of the multitude of enemies. Then, I noticed I could see an adjacent room full of flammable barrels. So, I waited patiently until several enemies barged into that room in order to reach me and attack. I then used fireball and blew up the entire room killing most of them and using line of sight and character movements while having this high ground to avoid getting hit while maintaining advantage on my hits. I did this before I really understood combat but knew that in this game you should always seek to use your environment to your advantage. Really fun encounter and very rewarding game! Never played DnD myself.
You can do the same with your familiar, and it's a ritual. If your familiar is invisible (pact of the chain, or other) you can move them outside of combat, to quickly reposition great distances.
**TURN OFF KARMIC DICE IN SETTINGS** Awesome guide as always, basically explains how to play 5e too haha. Karmic dice artificially alters the ‘randomness’ of d20 rolls to avoid streaks of success or failure!
Grease is an amazing way to get enemies prone. U can use grease through spells and grease specific bottles. Add in any form of fire and you make a bomb that can possibly knock over multiple enemies. Additionally, hitting any explosive material (grease, gunpowder, poison gas) with an open flame (torch, fireplace) creates a similar effect. Making sure u use ur actions to do as much as possible is key. This could look like saving an area of effect spell for when a group of enemies gather around a summon you had initiate combat or using party members who share initiative to create a grease bomb on enemies.
The barbarian class with Rage/Frenzy is insanely fun for melee play. I was running around in battle with 'hidden companion' and picking up and tossing the sorry lot onto each other 🤣👍
Something I've really wanted to try is using a frenzied Barbarian Karlach to throw a frenzied barbarian halfling PC. I bet it could be fun. On my next playthrough, maybe.
Note that thrown weapons use strength, this will be your ranged option as a strength character. Also, ranged weapons in the ranged weapon slot _can_ affect melee or thrown weapons and vice versa. A common tactic for a ranged character would be to give them a shield because this will increase their AC by 2 even when they have their bow equipped.
I shared this video on the steam forum of the game, since i've seen countless topics about people complaining the game being too hard when it's really not, it's just a very niche and different combat system for people not familiar with dungeons and dragons. Great work dude!
Yeah ur just showing off. Not hard for smart La di das but what about us stupid people eh? My halfling bard only has 8 strength. Don’t say start again. I’m already in the mushroom kingdom
This video is a literal 1:1 for how playing 5e d&d. I can't wait to get this game! As a d&d player I'm really looking forward to this one. Solasta: Crown of the Magister is also a great d&d game, only issue is that it only uses the 5e srd.
I would add that you should use Turn-Based Mode for doing so, while out of combat. Otherwise you'll burn through timed things like Fly, for little to no benefit.
Very helpful tip, I’ll have to figure out how to perfect it. I tried to get everyone into ambush position and then bless them before I started combat, but realized not everyone was close enough to buff. So I had to reposition to bless them and then when I went to maneuver them back into place my buff started to run out. I split the party but didn’t go into turn-based. I now realize that it stops time.
I can't believe I've spent over 60 hours in this game with my monk, and never thought to use the bonus action first to knock the enemy over and make the next attacks easier. I always thought bonus actions were a "last resort" kind of thing. Well I still made it to act 3 (barely), but didn't know about the Halsin "lift the shadows" side quest, and now I want to start over from the beginning!
Totally new to this game and DnD and I can tell you I've made dozens of characters within the first week of playing. Dozens. But now having seen this video and one fellow saying he kept reloading a fight to practice? well that just made my day! Off to create a new character for practice till I get the fighting right!!! :D
I play 5e frequently so I just wanted the game footage, which was appreciated. Thank you. Also because i like the channel and your guides a great listen.
This video really helped me. As much as buying new gear is common sense, you don't really know how much a small upgrade can impact. I bought my 4 all new bow's none of us having a DEX focus but all of us are a lot more accurate and stronger. Found actual useful gloves and even a pair of boots that gave me an extra armor class. Truly can't say how much this helped so Thanks!
Re: 3:17 - Some enemies can have an AC of 8, though they are few and far between. An excellent beginners guide, will be showing this to some friends who are getting into the game!
this was one of the most useful videos i have seen on combat, i didnt realise that basically every attack is a dice roll, and your stats and positioning give you advantages and disadvantages, and now can max my build to hit attacks more
A few extra points. Keep an eye out for environmental opportunities. Some barrels explode when attacked, others contain flammable liquids. A good example of this is when you fight the tomb robbers inside the ancient temple by the beach. Outside, you can kill 2 of the robbers by shooting the pulley system that drops a weight on them AND opens another entrance to the temple. You csn see the pulley at 7:52. Shoving enemies off high ground is hilarious. It can often one shot a mob. You can even pick up and throw smaller enemies. Or throw an exploding barrel, from above is best.
One of my favorite parts of the game is the AI for the enemies, even on balanced tier of difficulty. When you put an enemy to sleep and his friend will spend a bonus to shove him to wake him up, they will use the potions and poisons they have, the will dip weapons for the damage bonus, they set traps and actually use them. It really adds a level of thinking to the game that you do not see too often, which is refreshing. Also, I am only a few days into playing it and haven't even settled on a main toon yet. The ONLY issue I have had with the game is I wish the party total was 5 instead of 4. I have a really hard time narrowing down to a party of 4, and my parties often end up just looking the same, or I have to exclude someone I really want to use because I need to have the slots used for specific roles.
@@Tyler-xf9nu weird, you knew exactly what I was saying. It's almost like communicating is about getting something across to someone else. Toon works well enough for me, but thanks for your tremendous input into the conversation.
Been playing Lords of the Fallen, done basically. Going back to BG3, first run was rough but now after watching, sooo many things I should’ve done. Great video👍
TLDR: *Have at least 16 in your main stat (Ability) that powers your attacks, which gives a +3 modifier *Do not wear armor and weapons you're not proficient in (be sure to get the +2 modifier from Proficiency) *Get better and more unique weapons throughout the game that by themselves grant a +1 bonus/enchanted modifier and so on *For attacks that do Attack Rolls, try to attack from Stealth/Hidden and Elevated positions, and try to attack enemies that are Prone or otherwise Incapacitated; these give bonuses to your Attack Rolls *For attacks that require Saving Throws (usually Spells) from the defender, try to debuff the defender in the corresponding stat (Wis, Cha, Dex etc.) so he gets penalties to his Saving Throw, making it less likely he will resist the attack/spell effect (remember that the defender tries to overcome the incoming Spell's Difficulty Class) *Use Bless (and other buffs) that grants bonus to your Attack Rolls *In order to defend yourself, use debuffs (e.g. Bane) that gives penalties to enemies' Attack Rolls, which lowers their chance to hit you. Conversely, buffing your AC (Armor Class) will also make it harder for enemies to succeed in their Attack Rolls. And having a high Ability/Stat Score (can also be from buffs or items) can make it easier to Save Throw (resist) spells related to that Ability/Stat. *Remember to check if there is a Bonus Action that should be done before the Action, like knocking the target Prone first, and then following that up with the Main Attack *Try to get your melees close to the enemies' ranged, and keep your ranged away from enemy melee. Ranged combatans will have a Disadvantage penalty to their Attack Rolls if a melee is close to their face, and running away from such a melee will punish you with an Opportunity Attack (of the type "Reaction"), unless you've used 'Disengage' or something similar. *Try to use CC Spells to deny enemies their turn, so they're unable to do anything. Then you can Focus Fire on the non-CC'ed opponents and strategically wipe out your enemies one by one. Other: - Make use of the environment; using a Fire Bolt on an explosive barrel can knock out several opponents at once, and Shoving an opponent off a ledge can sometimes be sufficient - Dip your weapon in Candles, Torches, Poisonous surface etc. before your ambush starts to get in a little extra damage - Go into Turn Based Mode (Ctrl + Spacebar) to easier setup ambushes and avoid enemy Line of SIght. Also use "G" to split the group and move members separately to have them enter the encounter on their own term (by stealth attacking for example)

Sometimes retreating is not a bad thing, allow the enemies to advance and bundle together in a narrow passage, then attack with throw weapon can damage multiple enemies.
I'm 14 hours into my first playthrough and I have been doing it all wrong. Not sure exactly how I made it as far as I have (just got to Baldur's Gate in Act 3) but now I feel I should start over and do it right lol. Thanks for this guide!
i learned the hard way that equipping a different weapon counts as an action (and i think sending an item to a party member too?). there were times i was sitting there like a dumb bum wondering why i had no action. took me a second to realize what i was doing lol
Toggling a light source also consumes your action. The exception is that you can choose between your equipped melee weapons and your equipped ranged weapon before attacking.
Sending potions to another characters inventory don't use an action. Also on the item in your inventory it should have Action in the bottom corner to highlight it'll use an action.
@@XoRandomGuyoX oohh gtk. oh yeah i should've clarified that i meant putting a new weapon in the slot, not toggling between ranged/melee. i made it more confusing by wording it how i did

@@no_i_dont_want_no_slugs There are some conditional things that make your action go away: if you were unconscious and revived you lack an action until the next round of combat(really encourages you to heal early), if you split the party to initiate ambush tactics your ambushing action won't be restored until the next round of combat(exception is Assassin Rogue).
What I’ve learned is just don’t expect to beat an encounter, especially one with multiple enemies on your first try and don’t be discouraged. Keep looking for weaknesses and use examine a lot before fighting to see their resistances and stuff.
Haven’t seen mentioned yet is Faerie Fire that some classes/race has access to, and you can find it on some weapons too. It gives AOE advantage when used on a group of enemies. Very handy to get a head start in the fight. Another point is time your attacks smartly. Say your ranger used Flourish and got an enemy off balance. If your next party member is a cleric, then don’t hit the off balance enemy. Save that for the rogue who can make use of Sneak Attack to deal extra damage. Finally, use your summons to distract enemies and draw their attention. Summoned weapons from cleric are great because they can take a few hits before disappearing. They end up soaking damage for your party.
If you are a Warlock get Devil vision, cast Darkness, it gives you avantage on attacks (2 dice roll instead of one).. if you multiclass with paladin oath of devotion you get a concentration spell at paladin level 3 that increase your hit chances. I usually get around 88% hit chances on enemies with more than 17 AC (I have GWM on).
Thank you for the vid Fextralife, but all the builds are based on early access and some not updated for 2 year, so maybe not direct people to them just yet? Some of the info might be accurate still, but some might not be. E.g. In on recent video it was alluded that Eldritch Knight while good is not the best, yet in builds list it is under "best melee builds".
Also, some situations require odd solutions. In the underdark, you might run across a giant eye that will charm drow to help it. The best way to defeat the giant eye is to release the Drow so they can aid you in the attack.
unless they are charmed by the Beholder and you get more enemies against you.... and, even though they are your allies for a moment, i wouldnt release them... they are drows after all.
@@renegadejagd758 In the Alpha and in the finished game, they didn't attack my party after. They were just confused and talked after. If you leave the underdark and take a long rest, they will be gone.
