Many years ago I met a Balinese Indonesian at my workplace. He was born Hindu but turned into a Muslim. Later he realised his mistake and went back into Hinduism. After our friendship, I gifted him a book by Swami Vivekanand, the great Hindu saint who first spoke about Hinduism in the World of Religions in Chicago in 1890s. I hope he will remember me always thru that little gift

Indonesia was Buddhist Empire, Tamil people from chola empire migrated to Indonesia while it was javanese that's why there are found Hindus too, chola empire had control over it. That's how chola empire became hindu - Buddhist empire and half of it empire was hindu and half was Buddhist. Majahapit is Buddhist Kingdom not hindu. Very much later Portuguese and Dutch Company took control over it then after the end of those company, it became a Islamic country and till today its said to be Muslim country.

Most Indonesians have only changed their Religion NOT THEIR ANCESTORS AND CULTURE.They still greet each other with the 'NAMASTE' ,AirLines is Garuda AirLines, the Arjuna Chariot with Krisna can be seen in Bali,Jakarta etc.Even the Army names some of the Meeting Rooms after the Pandava Brothers.Maybe this is one Reason Terrorism can be controlled there.In India Most Muslims feel they are Arabs and behave like the Moghul Conquerors so more Terrorism and Extremism.If more of them can be like the late Nuclear Scientist President of India Abdul Kalam there would be less PROBLEMS.
I think,..as Islam crossed India and then only spread to Indonesia, there are less extremist, less conquering mindset in the minds of Indonesian Muslims due to the softened Islamic scriptures advocating peacefulness towards other beliefs, different from the original Arab Islamic texts. The polluted mindset of Islamic invaders have been conquered and controlled in Indian land itself, preventing more of its Eastern spreading.

The Sriwijaya Empire did indeed have strong links with India, but these were two way with India learning from Sriwijaya. Nevertheless, this was destroyed by the Cholas. The Majapahit Empire is often seen as Hindu and Buddhist but really it was Shaivite. Bali was traditionally largely animistic which is still very much important on the island and which is practiced by the true Balinese. Islam did come from Arab traders, but the main traders spreading Islam were from India and China, I should add largely peacefully. However, it was the Dutch who attempted to force Hindus in east Java to accept Islam. Those who wouldn't moved to Bali. So most Balinese are actually Javanese and come from the Majapahit Shaivite tradition.

Indonesia is not an Islamic country. It has majority of Muslims, but Indonesia were Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms.. The question should be, why bali is the only Shiva-Buddha left in the entire archipelago? 😢
Countries like Malaysia Myanmar Thailand Philippines had hindu civilization in the distant past. Temples found in some of these places are similar to Temples found especially in South India. All these countries had prosperous hindu civilization but due to some reasons they became extinct.
It shines bright though and iconic landscape, it preserved the core culture and fits with native naturally, can only occur with a high amount of spirituality and respect given where due.
Many of their place names and the language Bhasa (actually means language) have many Sanskrit words. Sumatra (Sumathera). Bali ( actually means statues or sculptures). Hindu culture still has it's mark in Indonesia.

Hinduism is one religion known as Sanatana Dharma. And both Hinduism and Buddhism coexisted for a long time. Hindu rulers patronized Buddhism. And in Southeast Asia they definitely coexisted. But Buddhism went into decline India as Hinduism had a resurgence like never before with the Bhakti movement. But it was still followed decently in India in places like Bengal until Islam came.
