You & Matt covered just about everything in that contrast between compact to the larger field tractors. That's wise advice by Matt with the 1025R & the rake. Just cause it can do the job doesn't mean that you should use it. There are multiple reasons & views why. BTW, that John Deere 8430 looks pretty sharp out there. Stay safe.

Hello Tim my wife has horse's and we feed found bales 4x4 most of the time or if we find cheaper rolls 4x5. What I do is flip the bale on end, find the end of the net wrap and unwind it. We use a pitchfork to unwind the hay and put it in a wheel barrow. We tried putting a full round bale out for the horse's but there is too much waisted hay, so we feed with the wheel barrow. In the winter time I use a plastic bed from an old garden tractor trailer may be 2'x4'x1' and pull it by hand out to the pasture.

@@TractorTimewithTim I have used one twice. One was a walk behind attached to a BCS Tractor which also used a Molon belt Tedder and sickle mower. Very convenient for very small plots or areas with odd shapes. At the time I was 55 so walking a lot was OK, but it spat out a bale every 60sec. or so, so a lot of stooping and going. The second time was a few yrs back at the Empire Farm Days in New York. This unit was driven by a 25hp compact tractor and used the same Molon Tedder (with the largest size), a disc mower, and the tow behind CAEB International mini baler w/wrap and auto discharge. It worked great and the round bales were set at approximately 40lbs. Light enough for a kid or older person to handle. Using pallet forks/w a pallet, they easily put five bales/pallet. For small fields and/or elder or handicapped one person can easily handle all three operations. They were cutting Timothy hay.

It was “radical” seeing both balers in the same field. The Maschio is quite a baler, and I was somewhat surprised you had no power issue using it. Great interaction with you and Matt. Thanks to you Matt and Christy for another well done video.

What is the weight of the “square” bale? I know small square bales run 60-80 pounds. I have seen large Square bales they weighed 500 #. That bale doesn’t look as big as the 500# bales I have seen. Enjoyed the episode. As a “youth” we baled 120,000 square bales a summer. We had a lifter that picked the bales off the ground so we could stack on the truck. The lifter was similar to the type city folks see putting shingles on a roof. As someone commented the worst job was stacking the bales near the hot tin roof. There was no ventilation and plenty of heat from the roof.

Net wrap may look nicer and protect the bale if you leave it outside. But I do not like it when it's freezing and raining outside and you got to get off the tractor to cut the wrap off. You lose 20% of your hay if you don't keep it in a barn. We have a new Holland 450 baler it makes a 4x5 bail . It takes almost no horsepower to pull that Baler I bet you could do it with Johnny 2. I also think you can pull a small square baler with Johnny 2 Thanks for the videos I'll try to get us baling hay on a video on our channel in a couple of days.

Great video Tim!! Our baler is twine only, wish we had net wrap option. Twine is good as long as you are storing bales inside and they don't have to be handled more than necessary, at least that's what we have found. If you had a single spear that allowed you to spear the center of the bale you would've been able to pick them easier, with two tines you are driving the spears through the tightest part of the bale. But I thoroughly enjoyed this video!!
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 4 года назад
Yep. Single spear would be better. I love the look of the net wrap. Looks much more finished....but I don’t have to feed them, so I’m not sensitive to the removal issues.

I was hoping the little baler was gunna be smaller. A baler that spits out regular sized small square bales but was similar in function to that big baler (in-line stuffer), I think would be great for either small tractors like Johnny and/or for farmers who don’t do much hay. Oh and it would have to be way cheaper than $22k, that’s nearing another tractor at that price! Especially if it’s an auction tractor!

Some personal bailing experience... Even today's small square JD bailers (328/338/348) are only specked out for a minimum of 35 PTO HP. Many, many moons ago I did some light duty custom upland haying as a summer job. We used a 1973 John Deere 1020 (2WD), rated at 38 PTO HP, and a John Deere 24T (twine) small square bailer. This combo worked fine with a couple caveats. First, the hay we bailed was rarely in a "heavy" windrow. Second, even though the 1020 was the smallest utility AG tractor JD made at the time, it weighed a lot. I'd think a large frame CUT like the current eHST 4052 or 4066 (with at 40 and 52 PTO HP respectively) would work OK with a JD small square bailer. Of course, handling small squares can all be done by hand if you're physically able and don't mind a serious work out picking them up and manually stacking them in a pickup or on a trailer. And then manually unloading and stacking them in a hay shed or barn. I know I did my fair share of that in my mid/late teens.

Were those standard round bales? They look like they are. I just didn't think a 1025r would be able to pick them up. Or does it max out at a foot off the ground? I am really interested in this series as I have a few cattle, not enough to get a big tractor and equipment. I also would be interested to know, would a 1025r be able to operate a old fashion small square baler? I buy hay but if I could find a reasonable priced solution I would rather grow my own so I know the quality. The sticking point has always been the baler. Thanks TTWT for this series and any information.

These are 4’ by 4’. About the smallest of the ‘large’ round bales you’ll see.

$20k will buy a lot of hay! But that little round baler is cool 😎 I was also impressed by Johnny picking up the round bales waaaay out in front of the hay spear.

20k doesn't buy nearly as much hay as it used to and then your at the mercy of the market. Buy it for 20k and take care of it, it will hold its value, much like tractors do.

@@jasone9 Its 31 years old barn kept, not sure on the how many I would guess around 15k. We only roll around 250 a season now. Has been a good machine new chain couple years back, new drum. Learned a few tricks with it over the years. It likes pto speed of around 300.

Looks like Johnny II did a great job running the bailer. I have seen smaller round bailers out in the world and they may be better suited to Johnny 1 for someone that has a small hobby farm like this with only about 10 acres to work.

We would have shown one of those small balers, but we couldn’t find anyone who would use them. No use baling them if they would go to waste.

Them muskio balers make a very rough bale it's very frayed and just abit all over the place unlike a mchale baler or a krone

That big 8430 is a beauty 😊 Try a Bale Spike on the front loader, I find them easier to use and less damaging

Yea, in retrospect, we should have tried it. I didn’t have the under tractor matt to keep the hay from getting caught up. I had assumed that the 1025r was too low to the ground to work over the wind row. Now, with the under tractor rubber matt, I’m certain it would have worked.

Crazy seeing these little, I guess what we would call utility tractors, working out in the hayfield baling and moving round bales. Maschio recommends 50 hp for the 120 baler so seeing this little 30 hp tractor handle it is impressive.

No way the 1025 handles that baler! U need heavier tractor for safely. U talk for days about towing safety on trucks and then completely ignore it in this equipment discussion. Same with the big square baler. 4430 is way to light. U go down any hill and u r dead. Hp isnt everything.

22k is a high price for foreign off brand baler. U can get a new holland 450 utility baler for that. Can get a used one for 15k! New equipment for a hobby farmer is insane. That new baler will last 20yrs only doing 20 acres 3x a yr. Would take 10 of those yrs just to pay it off. Used nh would last another 30 yrs. Nh is MADE IN AMERICA!
