Baling Thick Second Cut Hay (2023)

Just when the year felt like a total disaster and I had to give up on some too-wet fields of first cut, this happened. Swinging the circus back around for second cut on the early fields, and hitting yields I've never experienced before on second. 2023 continues to be full of surprises...

Hi from Ireland...the stone gaurd you fitted on your tractor is a brilliant idea..i had a pebble come through the back window while mowing one time.. almost lost my arm ...so well done...

Hi there - thanks! I installed it after my old 3 point mower threw a blade once after I lowered it right on a large rock. Never found the blade or any signs of it hitting the tractor, but the "exit" from the mower tarp was pointed right at me. Ever since then it felt like a good idea to at least *try* to put two layers of expanded metal between me and the mower. Helps me sleep easier at night, anyhow. But yikes, sorry you had that experience!! I definitely recommend doing it on open station tractors with disc mowers, even though I'm making it up as I go. Thank for watching!

That’s some crazy thick 2nd cut hay, I’ve not seen any like this myself in several years!

Thanks, I was absolutely floored! The regrowth on what I did in May (and even June) was more than I’ve ever seen before. We had terrible weather for hay in June/July, but boy did it grow grass. We’re having a very bizarre year up here, but crazily things are turning around. Thanks for following along!

It's definitely been a weird year here in Arkansas too. I got some first cutting 2 weeks earlier than I ever have, and baled a bunch of mulch after 10 days of rain in August when we are usually lucky to get a sprinkle. Then not another drop of rain until yesterday, so most everything is burned up. Yield wise, I had one field of very late first cut that was so thick I actually had to give up trying to rake it and baled it first then raked and baled what was left. Got an unbelievable 71 tight 4x5 rounds from about 8 acres.

Wow!! Gosh, what a year - can’t predict any of it!

I managed to pull off 6 acres of second cut. Only had 1.5 months of growth so I got 210 bales vs 600+ off first. But beautiful hay. Wish I had a barn full. Like I thought before horse people are very short of quality hay. We had a lot.of fields get flooded out and people don't want to get on them and tear them up.

Glad to hear that!! Having some good weather in the last month has been a godsend, but definitely still short on hay all over. What a tough year…

That was a nice week. It's 9/12 today absolutely horrible again like most of the summer. You might get a late 3rd cutting.

It sure was! Any luck with the most recent stretch? I may have third cut on some fields shortly, though it’s because I did early second on them in my hunt for dry ground in July. Trying to explain it all is like a haying version of “who’s on first”. Thanks for watching, hope you’ve been well!

@@windrowfarm I'm just a somewhat knowledgeable spectator. I think you did a kick ass job this summer. It was way beyond challenging year.

Do you have any issue with bale length consistency. I've had to bale fast(probably to fast) this year and am seeing 6-10 inch variations with my mf224

Oh, interesting! My bale length has been pretty spot on, only *slightly* smaller at the center of smaller fields where there’s a lot of turnaround time and less hay being fed. I did have an issue a few years ago and replaced the little friction wheel on the bale length meter. That totally fixed it. Even popping that off and cleaning with a wire brush might help, if you haven’t already. It gets so packed with crud that it can start to slide… Hope that helps!
