@Linux user Queen Elizabeth speaks Englsih, the King of the Netherlands speaks Dutch, the monarchs of Denmark, Sweden and Norway speak their respective languages, the King of Belgium and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg both speak French, etc. etc.
We had a Queen in Greece, later Queen-Mother, Friederika, imposed by the West against the Communists, who was in the Hitler Youth. Obviously German. The Glieksburg line were Danes, and previously, King Otto, was Bavarian.
Eh, the SOVIET UNION didn't do the balkans many favors either unless you bent over for stalin. Even then, you might not get out without a few hunger pains.
@@n8zog584 i really dont know how to respond to this one, being anti American means that i agree with the horrors of stalins (lets be honest kruscev was way worse) . But than again it just makes the west seem like a paradise when till the 60s-70s they treated black Americans in an even worse fate. The fact of the matter is that eastern europe went from being bombed to oblivion to basically being rebuilt because of the soviets. The balkans had to mostly cooperate, Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria to a high level managed that with no issue
@@Omesh1 I can understand that, America isn't exactly a gleaming monument to the world like some would have us believe, but the good both the SSR and the USA have offered is admirable. The downsides were deplorable. But I think it is just a shame that there isn't a system that incorporates the best of both worlds, learning from the mistakes of each. The issue here is in modern day, any communist revolution could be exploited heavily by those seeking to gain power. On the other hand any American reform comes slowly, with intense pushback from powerful people.
Personally I think that the saddest part of all of this is the fact that us, Balkan people, have accepted these stereotypes. It's unsettling to see that some people that I've met who are my age, born in later 2000s, think in that way. I also appreciate you mentioning the Nixa Zizu thing, as it seems to be forgotten lately. Much respect, mate. I'm glad to see that there are people who think like this.

I myself am of mixed origin, Serbian and Croatian. I grew up listening to propaganda from both sides and found it insane how both sides were at eachothers throats but shared the same culture and societal norms. This video confirmed my belief. I think most of the nationalism in the balkans is due to indoctrination of the younger population. I had friends that were super nationalists even if they were born after the wars. Truly insane stuff to which I cannot see a way out for them. With my voting right and trying to educate and raise further generations better is giving me hope. Thank you for this video.

In Orientalism segment, in part where you mentioned Nazis reminds me of this quote: "Yes, it would be worthwhile to study clinically, in detail, the steps taken by Hitler and Hitlerism and to reveal to the very distinguished, very humanistic, very Christian bourgeois of the twentieth century that without his being aware of it, he has a Hitler inside him, that Hitler inhabits him, that Hitler is his demon, that if he rails against him, he is being inconsistent and that, at bottom, what he cannot forgive Hitler for is not crime in itself, the crime against man, it is not the humiliation of man as such, it is the crime against the white man, the humiliation of the white man, and the fact that he applied to Europe colonialist procedures which until then had been reserved exclusively for the Arabs of Algeria, the coolies of India, and the blacks of Africa." -Aime Cesaire, Discourse on Colonialism
I think its a primitive and uneducated mans mind that groups people by color, mostly because ethnicity and culture takes more time for him to understand. Skin color isnt an issue, it almost never was, the only reason black people were treated the way they were, and still are somewhat, is because they happened to be easy targets. Every easy target is exploited, with no discrimination. Hitler was stopped by white men, white men were, almost exclusively, his victims. If the writer wants to say that all of us want to dominate and rule the world, I would say that isnt exclusive to white men, but white men have the most tools to pull it off and therefore are more tempted.
I heard of you through Second Thought and Yugopnik, I am definitely not disappointed with the quality of this video. Absolute banger, I'll be binge-watching all the videos you've posted. Svaka cast matori
As a Bulgarian I feel like the one notable upside to the whole Balkan fustercluck is that my other friends from Serbia or Croatia already have thicker skin so to say and connecting with other progressive-minded Balkaners is easier than other European nationalities, because of a sort of crass shared sense of humor and generational pain.
Thank you for making this video man! We need much more unity and cooperation. Respect from a country that hopefully becomes a peaceful Yugoslavia one day! 🇷🇸
I love your message, I am seeing a lot of overlapping aspects between Middle easterners and people from the Balkans. Especially when it comes to our images in the west, being seen as Barbarians and such.

My grandfather came to America from Croatia (yugoslavia) in 1953 and I've tried learning about the Balkans many times throughout my life but it was always such a confusing birds nest of groups at eachothers throats every time I tried. But you're videos are so clear to me about what's been happening there. Great job, keep up the excellent work.
The Croatian fascists desperately trying not to be Slavs reminds me of the Japanese doctrine of superiority over other Asians on the basis that they were actually "honorable Aryans", despite sharing so much more history and cultural traits with Korea, China and Vietnam than with the west
The intro immediately reminds of the way hip hop/african American culture has been othered and comidified in the west. Great work as always thanks from Canada.
Born and raised in Germany by parents who are croatians from Bosnia. My parents always taught me to be an upright person, being from a place with geniuses and poets I have to show always my best, to be the most polite and intelligent I can be. Representing my parents and my origins in the best way possible. As I’m a stereotypical looking Balkanian - tall and well trained - many thought I’m as gangster as my fellow people from the Balkans. As a teenager I thought that was cool to be feared but the older I got, the more I wanted to be respected for the wise words I speak and kindness i give as I was taught by my parents. Our men are more than gangsters more than a “Baustelac”, our women are more than good looking bitches (also a stereotype in Germany) but It’s also up to every single of us to show to them, that we are better than that!
You are speaking exactly like african americans who believe in black excellence. Now the circumstances are very different, but the belief is the same. Learn more about black excellence, and see how it applies to balkan people. As a latino and paraguayan (and, while not white looking, not dark enough to suffer noticeable consequences), we have way less stereotypes and suffer way less prejudgment than many would think, so i learned about these things more through the lenses of african american oppresion than my living experience.
Just one correction. Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia had always distinct national identities. On the contrary it's western Europe which is a melting pot. Check the UK for example which has 4 ethnicities (English, Scots, Welsh, Irish), Spain (Castillans, Catalans, Suebi etc), Italy (Sicilians, South Italians, North Italians).. The examples are too many to be displayed in a single comment. That's why nationalism according to the beliefs of the West was established as an ideology (language, religion, culture) and enhanced with liberalism. The West had (and still has) an identity gap. Balkans, and the mix of different peoples was enforced by the Ottoman authorities to divide and rule the region. That's why Greeks ruled in Romania, Bulgarians moved en masse to Macedonia, Albanians to southern Greece and Kosovo and Serbians to Bulgaria and vice versa. Early 1900 century, Imperialist powers such as Italy, Austria and Russia foresaw the fall of the Ottomans and one way or another managed to fuel the tensions in the area. Orientalism is more appropriate to the West rather than the Balkans.

About the use of recreational drugs and guns, as well as the whole criminal aesthetic, I think it also has to do with the rap genre to some extent, as many non-Balkan rappers use such things or refer to them in their music videos. While on the same subject, I can quote agree that the promotion of crime and recreational drug use are a problem. After all, these problems are a huge reason why I am a socially conservative person. Glad you touched on it. Thanks :)
We have had a wave of drug use in Algeria too. Maybe it's rap culture.. Maybe it's the underlying nihilism exported from the West and also from all corners of the modern world which made the ground of the Soul of our people so fertile for these kinds of mindstates to grow in our people.
@@malikialgeriankabyleswag4200 I would say a mix of nihilism and rap culture. And the obvious way to solve the problem is to find a way to shake off the nihilism and make it clear that the promotion of drug use is unacceptable in any sane society.

I think this stereotypical view of yours is blown up from German and Austrian stereotypes about us, and the typical Serbo-Croatian émigré that came to Germany and Austria. As a 19 year old who still lives in Bosnia, I find most of the stereotypes you talk about are overexaggerated. Sure, these people exist, but they aren't the majority. You view us like we are animals and good for nothing slaves of materialism and other such thought. The materialism in these parts comes from very long Ottoman occupation which has had it's effects, Ottoman culture was very lavish and materialistic thought was often more common than selfless thought. This is why you find Croats listening less to turbofolk-esque music, they weren't under Ottoman occupation for so long (or in some cases at all). The main themes in such tracks are ones of materialism, spending money on cheap women and expensive alcohol. This exact thought has been with us since Ottoman occupation and has never been properly phased out. To address another one of your points, nobody here wants to be like ''Pablo Escobar'' and become a criminal because ''It's the Balkan way''. In my age group, I struggle to see more than a very small but loud minority of people who think this way. Most people I talk to on a daily basis have ambitions like getting into university, or finding a stable job be it here or in other countries. On the other hand, the émigrés I've talked about prior are the more stereotypical types that more accurately match up with your view, and I think this is because you see them in Germany where you live. If you go on Spotify and look at the artists that produce music you voiced your negative opinions about, the top listeners usually come from places like Vienna, Stuttgart, Munich or Zurich, not Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo. This is because the materialistic people migrate to the west for money, because they hold views that they need more money to have a ''good life''. While most of those who stay don't hold these thoughts and would rather stay here with their people instead of ''selling them out for money''. The diaspora who don't fit this category are war refugees or mixed couples who fled facing persecution. Your view of the youth that is still in the Serbo-Croatian states is one that fits the average elderly Yugonostalgic, who views the past with rose tinted glasses, it is a view of ignorance and not a view of critique.
I think you completely misunderstood the purpose of this video and intentions of my presentation. I do not view our people as such, I do not endorse this image and I do not believe the majority of people think this way, to the contrary. I am merely criticizing this narrative in pop culture, movies and songs, I am exposing it's inconsistencies, it's opprotunistic, commercialized character that is sold to the rest of the world about us through our culture industry, whose narrative is embraced by a large amount of young people. All you have to do is watch the last 3 minutes of the video with good intentions, and you will understand what I mean.
@@BalkanOdyssey_ The narrative isn't embraced by a large amount of young people (if you are talking about young people in the Balkans themselves that is). Who cares what others think of us? Everyone has steoreotypical depictions. Take Italians for example, in America they're seen as mobsters that are fussy about food, or the Spanish, who are lazy, unproductive, and sleep all day. If we let arbitrary labels define who we are, then we're no better than the labels themselves. The individual is greater than the collective and decides his own fate
@@vmxoxo5436 The very simply point, that is stressed very openly in this video, is that this portrayal is politically instrumentalized to justify our place in the geopolitical landscape of the world. You as an individual can be as unique as you can, but when the military-industrial complex of the USA uses this barbaric despotism as a scapegoat for launching military operations against us, you can forget about the significance of your individualism. These labels get attached to you whether you like it or not.

The idea of ‘balkanism’ isn’t actually a bad idea think of it as way to unite the entire peninsula, leading to something that all the nations could benefit but as you said it’s going to need to pass as a theory a.k.a Karl max’s communist manifesto that too almost half an century for it to take place, the same thing could have happened with the balkans, someone writing a book about the ways the Balkan way of life unites us all no matter if you are a slav or Albanian or Greek. You bring up a lot of good points that I won't argue against, because yes, the carefully maintained "funny" Balkan persona is not a benifit and does ultimately drag the balkans down. However those things have been around since SOVIET UNION involvement. Additionally In the 60s through the 80s The balkans unfortunately got caught between NATO and THE SOVIET UNION. However, blaming NATO and the west while turning a blind eye to THE SOVIET UNION/RUSSIAN FEDERATION isnt ideal, but NATO does bear responsibility for weapons and involvement used in the Balkan wars. Also I would like to hear your take on the Soviet-Afghan war or the Russian-syrian war. Do you think those conflicts were avoidable?
Afghan Russian war was because of USA made Talibans and funded them so they can destroy the already destroyed from WW2 Soviet union. Syrian was wasn't avoidable cause Syria asked legally the help of they Allie to them Russia. Russia has the second biggest port in these sees so they had to protect it from isis and free Syria army that created by the Iraqi wars that USA made. They also funded the coup against Syria government and blamed Asad as a dictator cause he wasn't making business with USA but wit Russia. Energy business ofc.
@@TheAltSter no ...it started when the Taliban started to raising against their socialist government and wanted to make a coup d'etat with use of force.so the government asked Soviet union to help them. But these Talibans had the help from USA and CIA agents.
Having traveled all my life through all Balkan countries, I'd say your own stereotypes of the Balkans are a bit faded away, maybe stuck somewhere around 1998-2000. Of course, the West being the West, refueled some of the powder in the keg with the Kosovo odyssey, but most of seriousness in the images you showed actually stayed where it belongs - to the past. Those guys with the pathetic "nationalist" flags that are doing "nazi" rallies are mostly teenage football hooligans and thankfully even don't understand the ideas behind those symbols, let alone resorting to violence. Having said that - the powder keg is still dangerous, so don't play around with it. The world has to accept we like to drink, have our black sense of humor, speak politically incorrect stuff. Trying to impose "diversity" and "western liberal culture" by force - that falls directly into the category of the first part of your video with the nazis and colonization efforts. The important thing is - after 2000s, we might laugh at violence, speak about violence, hate each other, even have a fist or two thrown after a bottle of Rakia on who's da real Balkanets, but at least we don't bring out the guns :) So don't kick the barrel.
The Balkans is already a diverse place. I'm not sure diversity could be "forced."Plus the opposite of liberal is illiberal which usually implies that someone somewhere is being forced.
@@waltonsmith7210 "liberalism" in the contemporary, especially american meaning of the word actually is closer to some authoritarian dystopia like Putin's. But that's another talk.
@@waltonsmith7210 it can be forced and also diminuated. you can have as an example of forced diversity the serbo-croatians (south slavs excepting bulgarians) stabbing eachother, slowing their technological advances and normal lives. this was all wanted by the west, and if you didnt catch the "slowing technological advances" part, we balkaners could have posed a threat if our rising "diversity" wasnt provoked from outside

I find it funny that by making the parallel between Albanians and "Turkish" barbarism you're playing exactly into the narratives and conspiracies of ethno-nationalists circles within the ex-Yugo and Greek states. That's exactly What was used against ethnic Albanian and Bosnian communities during the collapse of Yugoslavia and the Balkan Wars. "They're just turks." The reason Albanians consider themselves local (and most historians and archeologists as well) is because there simply isn't another explanation for them. Linguistically they are completely separated from Europe. Genetically they are also completely separated from the rest of Europe. You can't really find anything similar anywhere else so, logically, they have to just be native. The only two other "explanations" primarily promoted by Slavic and Greek ethno-nationalists are two (contradicting) theories, one claiming that they are a result of Celtic migration and another claiming they are a result of Egyptian migration. The first claim suggest this migration would have happened sometime in the bronze age, the other suggest this migration would have happened sometime in the 2nd-4th century. If you're gonna try to come off as an intellectual on something, at least do some reading before hand.
This is why Tito and Communism was successful. Both knew how to unite people's and cultures no matter how similar but, visibly have ethnic tension and history..
Romania is even worse seen by Western colonizers: both a Balkanic barbarian and Gypsy subhuman. When only Southern Romania is actually Balkan and Gypsies came from India. Nobody knows true Romania: not Gypsies, not Dracula, not bloody violent inter-ethnic Balkan wars. Best way to describe Romania is: strongly influenced by the Byzantine Empire in both culture, history and religion. With even deeper Dacian and Thracian roots and being colonized by the Romans.

Balkan has not changed much since the Roman times. Then the divided Illyrian tribes fought between themselves like not long ago Serbs, Croats and Bosnians.
if you live in the Balkans and youre well educated, mannered you feell out of place most of time, you could find your social circle if youre lucky but truth is that most of well educated people move to weastern europe and those who stay are marginalized, the biggest problem is that media celebrates this stereotypes instead fighting against them so that leads to apathy and depression amongst those who stay and are not fitting into those same sterotypes
Arbitrary bigotism seems to be hardwired in the human brain. It's a tale as old as we are it seems. Down to the ancient Romans considering any who did not behave like a proper "roman" lesser. A barbarian. In this regard it takes active work and acknowledgement to strive against this nature within ourselves. To not repeat the mistakes of the past takes work.
I have been quietly fighting against these "norms" all my life.
