nice idea using them as the basis for other tools like hot cuts. I have a smaller ball pein I like to use for all my smaller tapering and curling work. just feels right in the hand and it is a nice weight for it without moving to much metal.

I have a 4 1/2 pound ball peen I got for two dollars at a flea market that has turned into my metal mover for forging tapers on larger stock. I've used the peens on my two I use for forging to shape leaves and to do tapers on the inside of narrow shapes. I've heard that smith's in England have used them forever. Everyone is looking for the special, ultra tool when what they need is already in their tool box. Thanks for the video.

So the ball peen is for work hardening the surface of a softer metal? That would explain the peened texture I see on a number of items of bronze or brass that need to keep a hollow shape like a cup or goblet. I always thought it was just decorative. I'll have to get more info. A good breakdown of uses though.

so, let's say you softened hard steel, then hammer the metal and make it hard again, is this just as good as hot forging ??? is vibration also hardened the metal.?
