More Rollerblading Antics
Summary of previous story.
I got Rollerblades one day in the 90s. That same evening, I bombed my first hill not knowing what I was doing. I crashed. It was bloody. I went to the store still bloody to buy ALL the safety gear.
Anyway, months lather, my friends and I had gotten pretty darn good at it. We bombed huge, scary hills, jumped things, grinded rails and curbs and eluded LEOS on the wide. We were rebels. Rebels on Rollerblades. That now sounds counter-intuitive. :p
One night at about 1am, my friends and I were at our local state court building. It was an absolute playground for skating and blading. There were so many things to do there and the cops knew it. They would regularly patrol the area so we knew we had limited windows of opportunity to do our thing, leave and hide, then come back again.
There was a staircase of about eleven steps on the other side of the area. That staircase led to a normal sized sidewalk, a small patch of grass after it then the road. Everyone else had jumped that staircase except me. I was scared. I was real scared. You see, it wasn't JUST that it had eleven steps that spooked me. No. There was a fairly large flat spot in the middle of which you had to clear as well. That meant in order to clear the whole stair case, you'd have to get some good speed. And balls.
Now if that wasn't enough, the landing was way more critical than anything else we've done. The sidewalk was uneven and you'd have to immediately jump the grass into the road hoping there are no cars to smash you. This is why we were there at 1am.
It was my turn. I had to psych myself out quite a bit while everyone called me a pussy. That's what friends are for, right? I said "fuck it", gained my speed and yelled "YOIKS...AND AWAAAAYYY" as I leaped forward into oblivion.
It seemed like 15 seconds had passed as I sailed through the cosmos. My friends seemed to be in slow motion and they were screaming at me. The thing is, they weren't screaming at me. They were yelling things such as "Oh shit!" and "DIG OUT DIG OUT" which meant, leave ASAP.
I stuck the landing but fumbled the jump over the grass into the road and in perfect Curt-fashion, superman-crashed it into the pavement...right in front of the cop that had just rolled up. Whelp. I laid there pretending to be injured even though I wasn't (because all the gear). The cop backed up, drove next to me, rolled down his window and asked me if I was okay. I thought I was busted but he was highly amused at my failed attempt and let me go :p. Sometimes failing is winning!
