Great stuff, the yard looks really good. Arizona Rock and Mineral makes a yard ballast that is a really dark dirty looking color if you are still looking for darker ballast. Don't forget all the railroad tie piles and discarded ties in the yard. Plenty of them around. - Steve

Looks really good! You should consider dry brushing different colors on the ballast. I did that on my layout, It was quick, easy and exceptionally effective. Thanks for your efforts you share with us all! Scott
@EvanstonSub

Yes. The ballast needs to be weathered just like everything else
@Perfusionist01
@Perfusionist01 11 месяцев назад
Very nice! yes, the engine facility looks much better. I think you will have some fun adding details, vehicles, workers, etc. I don't know about the UP in Evanston, but the BNSF in my area uses a lot of little Kubota ATVs for light duty around the tracks. You also need several of the white UP pickups and Suburbans. These have been made, but I forget by whom. Modern Ford trucks have been made by River Point Models - they can be a bit pricey, but a couple might make nice foreground trucks, with cheaper trucks further away from the viewer.

Your layout turned out tremendous. I use hot wheels for the cars because they’re like a buck 18 at the store and you can get a lot of them for pretty cheap and they’re not too bad and size and they’re pretty good detail.

Hi Daryl, I remain in awe of your progress as ever 🙂 What are your top tips and tricks for keeping ballast out of the moving parts of turnouts as you ballast ?
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 10 месяцев назад
Use less ballast and less glue at the points. Too much glue seeps down into the turnout motors and can cause havoc. Wait until the ballast is completely dry before attempting to get the points to move back and forth.

Nice work! The porta-potty cart is terrific. My question would be, where do you have space to park a MOW train? Or would you just run it from staging to staging during an op session? :D

Good question! There may be room at Granger. I saw some MOW equipment there last May.

You should put in to mow slideing tracks so you can put your rails an ties next to them
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 11 месяцев назад
Thinking of doing that.
@johnsthinking844
@johnsthinking844 11 месяцев назад
it’s been my experience just to glue the track down because the nails tend to pop up a little and catch a train. De rail or make it stuck
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 10 месяцев назад
I use nail just in case I need to make adjustments before the final ballast.

The layout looks great! Do you use spray cans for your two colors of the track painting or do you use an airbrush?
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 10 месяцев назад
Both! But mostly spray cans. So much more convenient.

@louisletourneau3429 11 месяцев назад

@EvanstonSub

Definitely. Especially after cleaning up around turnouts.
@louisletourneau3429
@louisletourneau3429 11 месяцев назад
@EvanstonSub thanks , no problem with the contacts of the moving part of the turnouts ? I try to protect them from the wet water and diluted glue but it sometimes goes in and after it gives me problems ....
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 10 месяцев назад
The turnouts are wired so that there is no dependency on turnout contacts for power.

Looking absolutely amazing, im in the UK & just getting into the American Scene so ive subscribed. I'm learning alot from your videos, thank you for sharing. Im going to be basing my much smaller set up in the Santa Fe in the 90s just b4 the BNSF merger. Is yours based in the current scene or earlier?

That excavator is the right size, you clearly haven't been around them. They have many large size excavators that dwarf dump trucks. I'd leave it on the backdrop.

@DC-_-

@EvanstonSub well that was easy lol. I like that backdrop fyi. It adds alot to the scenery. Besides, you can move the snow plow a bit further away and it won't seem as bad either.

Detail to eye "less is more." Too much little detail piece, robs from watching layout operations. Looks really good seeing both levels train on them. Background photos are perfect level of clearity (sense of distance).
