Ballistic Pendulum Problem 

Physics Ninja looks at the Ballistic Pendulum physics problem. A bullet is fired into a heavier wooden block and the system swing up some height H. Conservation of linear of momentum is used followed by conservation of energy during the swing portion. A numerical example is done at the end to find the initial velocity of the bullet
