Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with with Futaba or Hitec servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines. I will be using basic techniques of building rc plane balsa kits (or at least the techniques I have learned to build rc planes).
All of these videos will be placed on a playlist.
In this video I show how to install the engine mount for the DLE-20 RA gas rc engine. I use a Great Planes 60-120 adjustable engine mount. At the making of the video, Great Planes RC in no longer in business but you can still find this engine mount at online stores. There are also other engine mounts available from stores like Redwing RC, Valley View RC, Miracle RC, and ZY Hobby. I show how to center the engine mount correctly on the firewall, drill out the mounting bolt locations, and use cap screws and tee nuts for mounting. I also apply a little Loctite threadlocker to help keep the mounting screws secure. Once the engine mount is installed I placed the engine compartment cheek doublers and reinforced the firewall to the fuselage using balsa triangle stock.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques when building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do.
Thanks for watching my channel. Hopefully you will find my videos a little interesting and perhaps fun to watch.

Cet épisode était très zen avec les découpes, les perçages et les collages du bois plus la musique. Les écrous griffes qui s'enfoncent dans le pare feu en gros plan👍😄 j'ai adoré, merci.

One thing I would highly suggest from all my years of turning wrenches... Use blue loctite and not the red. If you ever have to remove that engine mount for whatever reason, it's going to be a bear and require heat to break that red loctite loose. Also, do yourself a favor and pin that firewall in. I use toothpicks or the wood sticks from those long cotton swabs. Just some added insurance, especially with a gas engine. Over 20cc I use aluminum angle you can get at any of the hardware stores on the backside of the firewall as bracing along with pinning the firewall. Other than that, its looking great man, keep up the goodwork!

Thanks I appreciate the suggestions. I was thinking about doweling in the firewall, but thought the double triangle bracing would be strong. But I’ll consider it again, thanks

Personally I only ever mount petrol engines to metal beam mounts I don't trust plastic to hold up and to be honest they aren't much different price wise and take up less space. I would also have mounted the engine sat on top of the mount rather than having it hang down underneath as that will put more stress on the mount it's designed to be stronger on top unless you have completely inverted the mount ? I am sure it will be fine but you know for next time doing it my way would also mean your mount would have been lower and more central 👍

Thats a good point. I just flipped it and didn’t think about doing it the way you suggested. I’ll have to remember that. Nice! Thanks

You should look into a transfer punch set. You can find a set for around $20. Use them like an awl.

Thanks. I do have a set of them. Sometimes I forget what tools I have. I do like the awl for wood a plastic, but for sure center punches are useful also.

Rather than putting a window or hole in for the carb adjustments I would just make a hatch 👍

I have been thinking about that as well. I will need a hatch for the gas compartment and maybe I’ll do one for the carb as well. I’ll look at it, but the only problem I may run into is making room for any mounting needed to support it. It’s super tight up there.

Hello James nice work again I'll have to agree with pervious poster that a hatch is cool way to conceal & keep your smooth lines. I'm looking at that mount and keep thinking that might act like diving board with eng all the way at the ends, I've been known to be wrong before. You could do a mock up now that the holes are set.

Thanks! Ya, I saw the previous post also , and have been considering it. It’s pretty tight space up there , so I’d have to make sure there is room for mountings.

Ha! The specs say up to a 30cc ! I’m used to glow, this thing takes up lots of room.

Sir, could you tell which engine mount that is, I have the same motor in aP40 TF

Hello , this is a Great Planes adjustable 1.20 to 1.80 mount. I modified by cutting the center out so the DLE could fit (check the video if interested). Great Planes is no longer in business, but you can still find them on eBay and other sites. They made a few sizes, so check. For the DLE 20 in the future, I would probably use one of the mounts that are available from Red Wing hobby or Valley View RC or similar. Thanks

The mount options for this engine have been a little puzzling for me. It’s a popular engine but it seams like there is not a well established mount to use for it. We’ll see how this one works.
