Balsa USA Stingray with DLE-20, RC Plane Build N0 18: Making Hatches

Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with with Futaba or Hitec servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines. I will be using basic techniques of building rc plane balsa kits (or at least the techniques I have learned to build rc planes).
All of these videos will be placed on a playlist.
In this video I show how to install custom access hatches for the fuel tank compartment and engine compartment. These hatches are not on the plans, but I decided I needed them. Making access hatches on your rc plane is not hard. With a little scrap wood and some screws, tee nuts, magnets, etc., you can easily add a hatch to your rc plane. The way I came up with the hatches that I install on this plane is only one way to do it. Hopefully this video will be helpful to show at least one way to install a hatch on your plane.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques when building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do.

thanks for your videos, i made myself laugh yesterday, after watching you drill your holes for something on your model build , i blew at my phone screen , im really living your build as you go along,

Since you are using a gas engine you can locate the fuel tank on the CG. You don't have the limitation you do with nitro where with nitro you need to locate the fuel tank close to the engine. Then you have full access to the tank when the wing is off. No need for a hatch. You'd have to rearrange the servos and such in the area under the wing (ie. where the CG is). You use green grid engineering paper. I love that stuff.

Thanks, I understand, but one issue is I cant see it when fueling up still? I guess try to see the fuel in the lines in the engine compartment when filling? But I get what you are saying. And, yep, got some good engineering and graph paper laying around from the analog days!

Looks great but personally on the hatch for viewing the fuel tank I wouldn't use a t-nut having to unscrew that every time you fill up would get on my nerves I would have put a sliding hatch pin on that one 👍

I use rare earth magnets instead of a t nut and bolt. This way, you don't need any tool to open of close your hatch

Yes, that is a good option. I have used them on other hatches. The only issue that you can run into is that since these two hatches set inside and are flush with the fuselage, unless I put some type of tab or something to grip the hatch, it can be difficult to pry the hatch open since the magnets can be really strong. so here I chose the screw option. But magnets are great also. Thanks

Well, might not be worth it, but have always thought if we could somehow sharpen our # 11 X-Acto blades instead of throwing them out and grabbing a new one...???...Same thing with high speed drill bits...???

My thoughts are blades are so cheap for hundreds of them its not worth the hassle of sharpening them. Drill bits are a different issue.

Well, if you want to become the next Multi millionaire or even a Billionaire....Then design and build a tool or machine to EFFECTIVELY....that's the key word... sharpen X-Acto blades and High speed drill bits....I have 'bout 5 or more vids in the queue on how to sharpen your Drill bits...Its a magical skill to learn using a grinding wheel....I tried it.... Can't get it...Tried the "Drill Doctor "... Its not consistent...Bits walk and drill off center....

I do sharpen them at times. I have a fine sharpening stone or just wet and dry sand paper, its easy to do but can’t get it like new. Mostly I discard them.

Well, sir...Thanks for your reply...Sometimes I sit around and think about stuff like that...Use , sharpen and reuse...Just like sharpening knives, I think you have to get the angles just right...If I had more time to "fiddle ", then I might could figure it out...Anyways, have a productive day...👍👍😊😊...
