Balsam Mountain Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, sits at an elevation of 5,310 ft. above sea level, giving it the highest elevation and coolest weather of any campground in the Park.
It is a small campground with 42 sites, but is well kept and very peaceful. Heintooga Overlook is just a mile away, and features magnificent sunsets.
We highly recommend this campground!

Enjoyed this video. We used to camp often through the years before my husband died in April 2022. We were married 43 year's 4 months and 12 day. I cherished ever day. Hopefully your next trip camping will be sunny.

So very sorry about the loss of your husband. I know it must still be very painful. Shawnasi lost her mother in March of this year, and she still has some really tough times with it. In fact, her and her sister are over at their mom's house right now, cleaning things out in preparation to put it on the market. That has been very difficult for them, going through their mom's things and finding things they remembered from childhood. We are very thankful for these things that we get to do together, and your comment sort of helps put things in the proper perspective. Even though the rain might have been unpleasant, we were still together and spending that time with each other. And that's something to be thankful for.

So glad I found you, we are planning a trip, and this was one of the campgrounds where we were looking for stay. We have a truck tent, and this is not looking good for our sit up. Thanks for the campground sightseeing videos.

sure fire way to make sure you don't get the sunset to yourself ever again is to tell the whole world about it on the internet!!!!

Well, this place has been pretty well known on the Internet for a long time, and there still aren't a lot of people that go out there. It's a pretty good little drive. We didn't actually have it all to ourselves, until after the sun went down. There were a couple of other families out there.

Looks like a beautiful campground. Thanks for filming this video. I recently moved back home from living fie past 34 years in richmond, va to look after my 83 year old dad in kingsport, tn. Having recently purchased a new 2023 tacona trd off tiad truck i am looking to get out on long weekends to explore in east tennessee and in western nc. I will have to check our this campground when I drive over into western nc on the many overlanding/ forestry roads. There are several thst run off of interstate 40 west of cosby over into catalooche Valley area.

This is a beautiful campground. Since it sits at an elevation of over 5,500 feet, it stays cool in the summer. Be aware that the road to it, is closed during the winter months, and reopens in May of each year. Thank you for watching!

I would be to afraid to camp out because of bears. It looks like there was some nice camping spots. That is a cool idea for a shower.

It's a beautiful campground. You never really have any problems with the bears, unless you leave food out. They have very strict guidelines in place on that. We've never even seen a bear in the campground, but I'm sure it does happen. And we camp in the Smokies every single year.

Always discover so much from your knowledge of so many places. We will definitely take a drive up here soon,

I'm glad you are finding new places to discover. The Balsam Mountain area is beautiful. And it's far less crowded than the rest of the Smokies.

Great video, will help me pick a site for June when reservations open. I’ve stayed at Smokemount and another park site up on the NC side. Saw some elk but none like that one. He was a big guy.

Thanks for sharing! This really helped me. Been contemplating which campground to pick because of weather. It was nice seeing it beforehand. The online reservation system says 0 cars. Is there a central parking lot somewhere or can you park at the campsite anyway?

So glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful.This is a really nice and quiet campground.Keep in mind that it is high elevation, and can be cool, even in summer. Each campsite should have a place to park. Some of them are smaller parking areas, but you should be able to get at least one vehicle in there. I don't know why it would say 0 cars. When we camped there, I parked my truck right in front of the campsite.

I'll be camping there soon at site 28. I got that one because of people saying everyone is close together and this one is the futherest back. It will be 150' walk which will probably make it annoying getting everything in. It looked more bunch up in that section to me in your video. I hope not but since you seen it in person what do you think? Also are there no mountain views from the campground or maybe a small walk to a view?

Those sites that I was talking about where you will be, are kind of like a little circle of sites that go back through a grassy area. That's the best way I know how to describe it. They are very nice sites, but the only reason I avoided one way back like that, is because we have so much stuff that we bring with us. It would have taken forever to have carried it all back there. I would say you are correct about the distance. I don't think you will be disappointed, but I do believe you might be closer to the other sites than you had hoped to be. Granted, I did not walk back through there, but that is the way it appears from the road. But still, those are good sites and it's a beautiful campground. No, there are no open views from the campground. But you can leave the campground and go to the left, and go about one mile out to the Heintooga Overlook. You will see where the road ends at a circle, and you just take the little path to the left. It's called Flat Creek Trail. Walk a couple of hundred yards, and there are benches out there, where you can take in some spectacular sunsets. The views from there, are amazing. And there are several overlooks on your way out to Balsam Mountain Campground, that are very nice. Honestly, my wife and I decided that when we go back, we are going to try to get site #23. That one seems to have the most privacy.

When using your shower setup at Balsam or Cades Cove, do you collect your gray water for disposal or allow it to drain at the shower site?
@NCMemoryMakers
@NCMemoryMakers Год назад
There really isn't a good way to collect it in the shower setup that we have. If we were in a camper, that would be different. We do use the environmentally friendly camp soap.
